Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has questioned President William Ruto’s frequent meetings with leaders from the Western Kenya region.
Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Amisi argued that the meetings have never resulted in any single project initiated in the region.
“I have lost count of the number of times the president has had meetings with Luhya MPs, but what I am yet to count is any single project initiated in Western courtesy of these meetings,” Amisi stated.
His sentiments come just moments after Ruto hosted a section of leaders from the Western region, with Amisi pointing out that he was not invited for the most recent State House meeting.
Lack of development
The lawmaker further stated that the Western region lags behind in terms of development despite the support from leaders in government, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
“Of course, they avoided inviting me for reasons best known to them, but isn’t it about time we now see these projects? Equalisation of funds to all regions of the country is key for the cohesiveness of a nation. Western is still lagging behind in development despite enormous support from our brothers in government,” he added.
President Ruto on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, hosted Western Kenyan leaders at State House. Cabinet Secretaries from the region, Deborah Barasa (Health), and Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives and MSMEs) also joined the meeting.
Busia governor Paul Otuoma, his Kakamega counterpart Fernandes Barasa and Bungoma’s Kenneth Lusaka also attended the meeting.
Ruto on meeting with Western leaders
Ruto, in a statement shared via social media, said that such meetings are aimed at accelerating the implementation of the government’s national development agenda, ensuring no region is left behind.
According to Ruto, the meeting with luhya leaders focused on strengthening agricultural value chains, particularly increasing fertiliser uptake to boost food production and reviving the sugar and coffee sectors in the region.
“We are engaging leaders from across the country to accelerate the implementation of our national development agenda, ensuring no region is left behind. Today at @StateHouseKenya Nairobi, held consultations with leaders from Western Kenya to assess progress on key priority projects. These include strengthening agricultural value chains, particularly increasing fertiliser uptake to boost food production and reviving the sugar and coffee sectors in the region,” Ruto stated.
“We also discussed urgent infrastructure needs, including roads, power connections and ongoing fresh produce markets. Other areas of focus were universal health coverage and projects that will improve access to clean water. Prime Cabinet Secretary @MusaliaMudavadi, National Assembly Speaker @HonWetangula, Cabinet Secretaries @DrOparanya (Cooperatives and MSMEs) and @DeboraBarasa (Health), as well as Governors @BarasaFernandes (Kakamega), @SpeakerKLusaka (Bungoma) and Paul Otuoma (Busia), and members of Parliament were present.”
