Speaking during a Citizen Engagement for Advocacy, Dialogue and Mediation Forum at St. Crispin’s ACK Church in Bungoma, Rev. Johnstone Nyongesa expressed concern over what he described as the increasing trend of politicians using financial handouts, ethnic mobilization and hired goons to gain political mileage.

He warned that the normalization of violence and intimidation during political activities undermines democracy and discourages meaningful public participation in governance.

“We are deeply concerned about the rising cases of tokenism and the use of goons to settle political differences. Such actions threaten peace, democracy and the future of our country. Leaders should compete on ideas and policies, not violence and intimidation,” Rev. Nyongesa stated.

He urged politicians across the political divide to desist from sponsoring violence or hiring groups to disrupt other political meetings and businesses during campaign rallies.

“The country has suffered enough from political violence. As we approach the election period, leaders must exercise restraint and allow every Kenyan to enjoy their democratic rights without fear or intimidation,” he added.

His remarks come amid heightened political activity across the country, including recent disagreements between leaders allied to the Linda Mwananchi movement and Sirisia MP John Waluke over proposed venues for political rallies in Bungoma County.

The Bungoma County Government has intensified efforts to curb gender-based violence (GBV) and rising cases of teenage pregnancy following the operationalization of the Ndengelwa GBV Centre, a facility expected to strengthen survivor support services and improve emergency response across the county.

Speaking during the handover, Governor Kenneth Lusaka described GBV as a barbaric practice that continues to destroy families, traumatize victims, and rob communities of dignity. He said the county administration would adopt a zero-tolerance approach against perpetrators while strengthening protection systems for women and children.

“Gender-based violence destroys families, steals dignity, and traumatizes victims. As leaders and stakeholders, we cannot remain silent,” said Lusaka.

The governor noted that for years, survivors in Bungoma were forced to seek specialized services in counties such as Kisumu, Vihiga, and Nairobi due to the lack of a fully operational local support centre. He said the new facility will now enable survivors to access medical, psychosocial, and legal support within the critical 72-hour response period.

The launch comes amid growing concern over the county’s history of high GBV prevalence. A previous survey conducted in 2022 ranked Bungoma among the leading counties in cases of physical and sexual violence, with reports indicating that 62 per cent of women had experienced physical violence, while 30 per cent reported sexual violence.

Despite the grim statistics, county officials say recent interventions are beginning to bear fruit, particularly in the fight against teenage pregnancy. According to the county’s adolescent health coordinator, Milsane Kiplai, cases among girls aged between 10 and 15 years have significantly dropped from 23,000 in 2018 to 10,400 in 2025.

Kiplai attributed the decline to increased awareness campaigns, school retention initiatives, and community engagement programs targeting both parents and adolescents.

“Our focus is to ensure girls remain in school and are protected from exploitation and abuse. The progress is encouraging, but there is still a lot of work ahead,” she said.

However, health officials warned that intimate partner violence remains a major challenge, with the Ministry of Health reporting that 70 per cent of GBV cases recorded in 2025 involved intimate partners.

Janet Khisa from the Ministry of Health said the county and its partners are now shifting focus toward prevention at the household and community level to address the root causes of violence before cases escalate.

“We are working to ensure information and support services reach communities early enough because prevention remains the most effective approach,” said Khisa.

Director of Special Programs Caren Wanyonyi lauded the collaboration between county departments, health stakeholders, and community organizations, saying the partnership would strengthen coordinated responses to violence and child protection issues.

She emphasized that the multi-sectoral approach is critical in dismantling systemic barriers that have for years undermined the safety and well-being of women and children in the county.

Data presented during the event further showed that Bungoma County recorded 9,089 GBV cases involving girls aged between 10 and 17 years between 2016 and July 2023, nearly half of the 18,510 cases reported nationally during the same period.

County leaders have now vowed to shift the conversation from merely documenting cases to enforcing protection mechanisms, prosecuting offenders, and restoring dignity to survivors.

But for the organizers and players, the real victory is measured in the absence of statistics, zero pregnancies and zero school dropouts among its participants.

The urgency of the Wema Girls Cup is underscored by sobering data. According to the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), Bungoma County has a teenage pregnancy rate of 19%, significantly higher than the national average of 15%.

Recent data from 2024 further highlights the crisis, with Bungoma consistently ranking among the top four counties nationally for reported cases. Ministry of Health records show a staggering cumulative total of over 106,000 pregnancies among girls aged 10–19 between 2016 and 2023. These numbers often translate into a cycle of poverty, with many girls forced to drop out of school or marry early.

A Shield Against Idleness

“We run tournaments every holiday to engage girls so they aren’t idle,” says Elizabeth Juma, the founder of Wema Girls Cup. Her motivation was born from a troubling observation in her own business, where she saw older men preying on underage girls. “By keeping them busy, they don’t have time for such practices.”

The program’s impact extends beyond the pitch. By partnering with schools like Busia Chapel, the tournament has facilitated sports scholarships for talented players, removing the financial burden of school fees that often makes girls vulnerable to exploitation.

Michelle Masika, the Captain of Murembe Starlets, is a living testament to the program’s success. “Through Wema tournaments, we are being sponsored at school, we don’t pay school fees,” she says. “It keeps us busy and away from ‘bad things.’ We don’t have time to just wander around and engage in un-meaningful practices.”

The Wema Girls Cup isn’t just about football. This year’s event included a conference where women leaders mentored the girls in life skills and reproductive health. Elizabeth Juma emphasizes that the program aims to build champions both on and off the field.

Despite its success, the initiative faces significant hurdles. Women’s sports in Bungoma still battle traditional norms that view football as a “boy’s game,” and there is a dire need for better facilities.

The Power of Drought-Resistant Seeds

Gerald Masila, Executive Director of the Eastern Africa Grains Council (EAGC), highlighted the need for farmers to switch to drought-resistant crops, stressing that it is the most effective strategy to combat the erratic weather patterns caused by climate change.

“When you walk in our demonstration plots at Kibabii University, you realize that there are plots have fared on with low water supply,” Masila noted, pointing to the superior performance of the new seed varieties.

Beyond climate-smart seeds, the expo showcased a holistic approach to climate resilience that integrated several key practices including minimum tillage and Conservation Agriculture to improve soil health; Water Harvesting Solutions to secure a reliable supply; technologies designed to minimize evapo-transpiration from the soil; advanced Pest and Disease Management techniques to protect crops; and innovative Solutions for Post-Harvest Losses to ensure a greater amount of harvested grain reaches the market.

Margret Juma, a farmer from the region, shared a stark personal revelation saying that she previously harvested only one sack of maize from an entire acre of land, attributing the poor performance to her use of traditional seeds.

“Initially, I used to select seeds from what I harvest and store for the next planting,” she admitted. “But from the knowledge I have gained here, I will be buying seeds from certified companies and shops for better performance and those that are drought resistant.”

Ms. Juma is now confident that the newly acquired knowledge on seed selection and farming technologies will significantly boost her yields, potentially tripling her harvest.

Felix Muchieka, an Agriculture student at Kibabii University, echoed this enthusiasm, applauding the expo for providing practical, hands-on lessons in new farming technologies. He also encouraged young people to view agriculture as a viable and critical employment opportunity.

Masila further stressed that EAGC’s mission extends beyond the farm gate. As a council of grain traders, processors, and warehouse owners, EAGC is working to ensure that the adoption of climate-smart methods translates into a robust and profitable grain value chain for its members.

In a crucial environmental effort to mitigate climate change effects, EAGC is also partnering with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to restore the Mt Elgon ecosystem. The expo, which reached over 2,000 farmers, showcased a wide array of innovations from precision agriculture tools and digital platforms to organic and synthetic farming solutions, giving farmers and agribusiness actors a comprehensive toolkit to enhance productivity and sustainability.

“Our mission is that at the end of this expo, farmers would come out with good knowledge of what seed to select and when they go out to their farmers they will know the right thing to do in improving their yields,” Masila concluded. A transformative initiative spearheaded by PELUM Kenya, aiming to enhance the capacity of women change agents and selected male allies to amplify advocacy for women’s rights, access to resources, and representation in the context of land and rural livelihood resilience in Africa.

The program’s main focus is to tackle long-standing challenges that limit women’s ownership, control, and participation in land use and decision-making processes. According to PELUM Kenya, the program aims to promote inclusive rural transformation by building the knowledge and leadership skills of women to effectively engage in governance, policy advocacy and sustainable agriculture.

The WE4R program is anchored on three key pillars: Rights, Resources, and Representation, designed to strengthen women’s agency and promote gender-responsive land management.

“Empowering women with knowledge and resources is the first step toward transforming communities and achieving resilient rural livelihoods,” said Monica Nyaga, the program’s coordinator during the inception meeting in Kericho.

Under the program, PELUM Kenya is working with community-based organizations and Women’s groups to raise awareness on land laws, succession planning, and fair land leasing practices. Women are also being trained in sustainable agriculture and agroecological methods, including kitchen gardening, soil conservation, and crop diversification to enhance household food security.

With the inclusion of male allies in the program, it intends to promote shared responsibility and to address cultural barriers that have historically limited women’s participation in land and natural resource management.

Grassroots tools transforming Access to land

PELUM Kenya has partnered with grassroots organizations such as Shibuye Community Health Workers to popularize Community-Driven Land Lease Guidelines and the Haki Ardhi tool, a mobile-based platform that allows women to report land rights violations confidentially.

These community tools have already yielded results. In counties like Kakamega, Siaya, and Homa Bay, women farmers have leased land through the guidelines, enabling them to start agribusiness ventures and increase their productivity.

Some groups have also formed cooperatives focusing on sweet potato production and aquaculture, improving their incomes and food security.

Through fair land leasing and awareness of their rights, more women are accessing productive land and engaging in agribusiness, said Doreen Magotsi.

Beyond the community level, PELUM Kenya is engaging county governments and national agencies to influence land-related policies that promote women’s rights and equitable access to natural resources.

The organization has trained community paralegals to support women in navigating land disputes, succession cases, and advocacy processes. Mentorship sessions under the WE4R program also provide platforms for women to share experiences, learn from one another, and build confidence to take part in decision-making spaces.

Monica notes that the WE4R program aligns with PELUM’s broader goal of promoting ecological land use and gender equality in rural development.

“The project is being implemented in several African countries, with Kenya taking the lead in integrating gender equality into land governance and community resilience programs. It goes beyond land matters, but also to equity, dignity, and the power to decide, more so for our women in rural areas,” she says.

As the initiative continues to gain traction, PELUM Kenya has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that both women and men play active roles in shaping inclusive and sustainable rural communities.

The participation of youth, women, and smallholder farmers in policy and decision-making processes has been underscored as a key pillar for promoting inclusive governance and sustainable development.

Speaking during a workshop aimed at enhancing the capacity of these groups to engage in public policy, John Khamala, Director of Public Participation and Civic Engagement at the County Government of Vihiga, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in governance.

He noted that public participation strengthens democracy, enhances transparency, and allows citizens to feel a sense of ownership in government processes.

“It is crucial for women and youth to take part in public participation because it brings legitimacy to government documents and ensures that decisions reflect the needs of people,” said Khamala.

He went ahead to note that many times, women, youth, and smallholder farmers are left out of key governance processes, yet their involvement is important

The workshop, convened by Participatory Ecological Land Use Management-PELUM Kenya, sought to strengthen the capacity and engagement of youth, women, and smallholder farmers in shaping public policy and decision-making processes that affect their livelihoods and development priorities. Participants were sensitized on how to organize themselves, share their views, and take up leadership in influencing policy implementation at both the county and national levels.

Mary Irungu, policy and advocacy expert from PELUM Kenya, highlighted that youth and women form the backbone of agricultural production and community development in Kenya.

She noted that despite their vital role in food production, climate change adaptation, and rural innovation, their contribution is often underrepresented in key policies such as agriculture, climate, and the livelihood framework

Irungu stressed the need for youth and women to move beyond being beneficiaries of government programs and instead become active contributors and change-makers in policy processes.

She emphasized that their firsthand understanding of community realities makes them valuable voices in shaping effective and responsive policies.

Vihiga County launched the Agroecology policy earlier this year, aiming to promote sustainable farming practices that improve food security, protect the environment, and strengthen local food systems.

Irungu notes that the initiative aligns with the National Agroecology Strategy for Food System Transformation (2023-2024), which guides counties in developing localized agroecology policies and strategies.

“Some counties, including Murang’a and West Pokot, have also launched their agroecology policies, while others like Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, and Laikipia are in the process of developing theirs, which is a good move and must be encouraged in other counties while allowing every voice to be captured in the formation, including those of women and youth,” said Irungu.

She underscored the importance of counties tailoring their policies to local needs and contexts rather than merely replicating national frameworks. This, she said, would ensure that policies are practical, implementable, and responsive to community realities.

The forum also shed light on the growing challenges facing the agricultural sector, all the way from climate change and declining soil health to the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases linked to chemically treated and processed food. In unison, there was a conclusion that agroecology is a sustainable approach to food production that enhances soil fertility, promotes biodiversity, and ensures safe food for all.

As this conversation on inclusive governance continues, youth, women, and smallholder farmers need to step forward and take their rightful place in shaping the future of their communities.

Their active participation in policy spaces will not only strengthen democracy but also ensure that decisions made at the county and national levels reflect the voices and aspirations of those most affected.

The shifting climate patterns continue to threaten food production across Kenya, forcing farmers to rethink how they grow food and sustain livelihood. Against this backdrop, young farmers in Kakamega County are turning to innovative, climate-smart approaches to build resilience and secure a sustainable agriculture future.

This commitment was on full display during the Kakamega Climate Smart Agriculture Farmers Expo and Field day. Themed “Cultivating Climate Smart Practices for Future Foods”, the Expo brought together farmers, youth groups, agribusinesses, and development partners across 11 sub-counties to showcase technologies and practices that promote sustainable farming.

The field day, hosted by a young aspiring farmer Audrey Habiba focused on climate-smart technologies such as solar-powered irrigation, organic fertilizers, and modern pest control solutions. Audrey’s story as a young agripreneur transforming her family’s land into a model of sustainable farming inspired many in attendance and underscored the growing role of youth in driving agricultural innovation.

The key note speaker, Ms. Jackline Masicha who is the Kakamega County Executive Committee member for Youth, Sports, Gender and Culture lauded young farmers for embracing agribusiness, noting that over 10,000 youth in the county are now engaged in various agricultural ventures. She emphasized the county governments’ continued investment in value addition to help farmers maximize their earnings and urged parents to support youth by granting them access to land.

The Expo also served as a learning platform where exhibitors demonstrated solutions that can help smallholder farmers adapt to climate shocks. Key partners included PELUM Kenya (Participatory Ecological Land Use Management), Practical Action, and Several Private sector stakeholders.

PELUM Kenya which promotes agroecological and climate-resilient farming, was among the organizations exhibiting at the event. Through its programs and mentorship initiatives, PELUM continues to support farmers and youth to adopt eco-friendly, low-input farming methods that improve soil fertility and enhance food security.

As part of its Women Empowerment for Resilience (WE4R) and Youth in Agroecology and Business Learning Track Africa programs (YALTA), PELUM has been training women and youth across Kenya on sustainable agriculture practices and also strengthening the capacity of women to be change agents and advocates for women’s rights, resource access, and representation in rural livelihoods and land matters across Africa.

Farmers attending the Expo expressed optimism that the knowledge and partnership forms would help strengthen local food systems. Many highlighted that integrating renewable energy and organic inputs into agriculture not only boosts productivity but also reduces costs and protects the environment

A boda boda rider from Katito in Kisumu County has become the latest millionaire in Coca-Cola’s funua flava under the crown promotion.

Jacob Ochieng Liech, 43, from Konyuro village, received the Sh1 million weekly prize at a colorful ceremony held at Katito Market on Thursday.

Ochieng could hardly hide his joy as he received the Sh1 million cheque in front of cheering friends, fellow riders and curious shoppers.

For years, he had been riding borrowed motorcycles before taking home what little remained.

The father of five said the win would transform his life, allowing him to finally buy his own motorcycle after years of hiring one at a daily fee.

“I will use this cash to buy my own motorcycle so that I can make good money. Before, I had to part with at least Sh 300 daily to the owner of the bike, which left me with very little,” Ochieng noted.

He added that part of the prize money would go into expanding his wife’s traditional mat-making business.

Ochieng’s journey to becoming a millionaire began when a friend encouraged him to participate in the promotion.

His first reward was 50MB of data, but he kept buying his favorite Stoney drink and sending codes until he received the call confirming he was a grand prize winner.

“At first, I didn’t believe it. I even disconnected the call. But after several follow-ups, I realized it was true,” he said.

The United Nation in 2015 established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a blue print to achieve a sustainable and better future for all by 2030.

Among them, Sustainable Development Goal 5 which concerns gender equality seeks to end all forms of discrimination, violence, and harmful practices that are against women and girls both in private and public spheres.

Kenya has had forums that have continued to champion the documentation of every milestone realized in the implementation of SDG 5 to complete the research cycle by identifying the existing barriers that prevent the realization of gender targets and in the recent.

A research was recently done by SDGs Kenya Forum in collaboration with Plan International to establish the gender gaps concerning the implementation of SDG 5 of the Agenda 2030.

It is noted that as much as counties are working towards developing gender policies, it has taken a lot of time to be realized. This is because there has been inadequate allocation in terms of human and financial resources where counties are only depending on the national legal and policy fame works.

The national government has, of course, invested in creating supportive legal policies and institutional frameworks but it becomes a challenge for counties to rely on them because of the nature of gender mainstreaming in that not one size fits all and so it becomes a challenge in different settings.

The developed policies at the national level do not give room for the participation of the stakeholders like allowing people to air their opinions first before developing the policies and so many of the drafts have been developed without their involvement.

It is noted that many counties have indeed established institutional frameworks for gender equality and empowerment but the gender departments remain incapacitated in terms of human and financial resources.

This now calls for Plan International and SDGs Kenya Forum to support the counties to develop gender policies and their costed action plans and monitor their implementation, facilitate capacity building of County Planning Units on the SDGs with a specific focus on the gender indicators and gender-responsive budget.

There is also a need to foster and strengthen the monitoring frameworks and mechanisms identified at the national and county level toward increased reporting on SDG 5 targets based on the agreed indicators.

The state Department for Gender and National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) should work closely with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) by strengthening it to invest more in gender statistics data gathering at both the national and county level for effective reporting on SDG 5 because it can only be worked out based on evidence provided.

According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes the red blood cell to form a sickle shape blocking blood flow and oxygen from reaching all the body parts of a person.

Joy Watitwa, 36, from Sinoko village, Bungoma County narrates on the pain of living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and goes ahead to call on people to be careful not to marry from families with SCD history.

She talks about her story of resilience after being diagnosed with the disease at 4 months old, battling with it up to now at the age of 36, now creating awareness about the disease and educating people about it.

She narrates

Sickle cell is caused by both parents when they happen to be carriers, for me my parents were both carriers meaning; the percentage is low and less dominant for them.

I turned out with SS after inheriting Hemoglobin S from each of them, for they both have AS. The pain of a SCD patient is caused when the sickle red blood cells fail to pass through the blood vessels because of the sickle shape and whenever they get stuck; it causes a lot of pain to the patient, causing low blood in the body which now results to a sickle cell crisis.

These cells mostly get stuck on the joint that is why you will find many sicklers complaining about severe pains on the joints. The limited supply of blood and nutrients in a sickler patient’s body causes low oxygen supply too and you will find that their eyes appear yellowish in color, something that we, as victims have to live with everyday.

We live on medicines that help to boost our immunity and blood supply in the body because whenever a small issue arises our bodies cannot withstand to fight back like that one of a normal person.

Some of the medicines that we are encouraged to take are Prophylaxis especially as sicklers from Western and Nyanza regions, areas that are prone to Mosquitoes’; we do take Paludrine to prevent Malaria.

I also do take Hydroxyurea medicine daily to help in boosting my immunity. This one depends on the age and the weight of a patient, and so you will find some patients taking more than the other depending on those two factors.

We also do take antibiotics to help whenever there is an infection from a cut or minor accidents, basically our lives revolve around medicines day in day out, we take medicines to survive because our bodies cannot fight on their own.

Whenever a sickler is in a crisis, the first thing that they do to us when we reach the health facility is to check the level of oxygen and blood in the body, if it is less they put us to supplements to revive the normal and needed amount in the body. They then do blood works to check what triggered the crisis and the pain and then they put you on medication depending on the findings.

Managing sickle cell is not easy, it drains one financially because apart from those medications one need to have a proper diet and to live a very delicate life with proper care.

We are supposed to limit ourselves on almost everything, we are not supposed to be stressed or angered and as human beings, this are common things that happen in our daily lives so we find it so hard to control and with that, one can easily be driven into a crisis.

Last year was so tough for me; I was in and out of hospital because I had other medical conditions that were triggered by sickle cell. I developed leg ulcers whereby I had wounds on both of my legs and it was so tough for me to a point where the doctors suggested that I undergo a process called Aphresis.

Aphresis is a process whereby the medical experts drain all the blood in your system and gives you a new one. The process is quite expensive and only done in a few hospitals in the country.

I underwent the process and was given new blood from a normal human being but it doesn’t mean that I am free from SCD, it just boosts my immunity and helps my body to at least function well, this I will say is what has kept me up to now.

I would advise the parents or people dealing with sickler to try and have them undergo the process, it costs around 250 Kenya shillings.

Living With Stigma

I remember when I was growing up, I could hear people talk about my situation saying that I might not get past the age of 12, it was and still is not true.

Sicklers can live normally so long as they be cautious to follow keenly on medical instructions from doctors, I am now above 30 years and others can go as far as 90 years depending on how you take care of yourself, SCD is not a death sentence.

I am a member of Sickle Cell Federation and I am also an advocate for the same. The reason to why I decided to join this movement is to create awareness because there is so much ignorance on this disease, SCD is not a death sentence, it is not witchcraft and neither is transmittable from one person to another, it is inheritable.

I have faced rejection and that is why I decided to amplify my voice on SCD.I don’t want my fellow warriors to face what I have faced all the way from primary school when my fellow kids wouldn’t play with me because they were scared that I will die on them or I might infect them.

I have been subjected to stigmatization at work and it has not been easy, I just had to accept myself and embrace my situation and push myself to keep going.

Sicklers need emotional support because dealing with the whole disease itself is so draining. I just appeal to everyone who is dealing with a sickler or gets to meet them, the least one can do is to give them a word of encouragement and support.

I also appeal for the government both at the County and the national level to intervene and make it easier for us in terms of accessing health facilities and medicines.

Some victims come from poor families and they cannot afford the medicine considering the fact that SCD is an expensive illness and so there is need for the government to get involved. Just like HIV/AIDS, we also need to be helped to at least acquire the medicines either free or subsidize the cost so that they can be affordable.

Medical Expert’s view on Sickle Cell Disease

Doctor Dickens Lubanga who is in charge of pediatric section in Bungoma county Referral Hospital says that  in that particular pediatric section only, they get to see up to a thousand children coming in with SCD issues in every month.

He notes that the burden could be higher if the screening is intensified and testing made affordable and available to more residents in the other sub counties like Webuye, Mt Elgon and Kimilili which is alarming.

He says that Bungoma County is gaining momentum as far as SCD is concerned unlike previously where it was much known in Kisumu County.

Lubanga says that there’s need for the County government together with the national government to have a conversation over the rising of the cases in the county and help in finding a long lasting solution.

“SCD is inherited and the inheritance pattern is recessive, meaning both the husband and the wife must actually have the trait for it to expressed, we have had issues when the fathers don’t want to associate themselves in the this cases, mostly linking them to the women but we try to make them understand that it is a problem between both of them,” said Lubanga.

Dr Lubanga notes that a study was done in Bungoma County and up to 43% of the adolescent have the trait and goes ahead to encourage the residents to be keen not to intermarry from those regions because it continues to perpetuate the gene of SCD in the population.

“If you must marry from the same region then take a test first, we now have a machine in the county referral hospital that offers Hemoglobin electrophoresis and every test goes for 1500 Kenya shillings. We are encouraging people to take this test because it is way better and affordable to test than have to deal with children who are born sicklers, it is so expensive  and emotional draining,” said Dr Lubanga.
