At least 126 organised criminal gangs are operating within Nairobi.

Nairobi Regional Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo has said the government managed to point out the gangs following an extensive intelligence-led mapping exercise.

According to Kitiyo, the gangs were uncovered through a targeted programme focusing on organised crime and emerging security threats.

The security boss, while speaking on Radio Generation, said the authorities had already moved from intelligence gathering to enforcement, with arrests ongoing across the city.

“When it comes to organised crime, these are criminals who use all manner of tricks and ways to reach out to people,” Kitiyo said.

“In Nairobi, we have recorded almost 126 criminal gangs using various names.”

According to the regional commissioner, the gangs operate in defined zones across the city and rely on structured leadership, communication networks, and social spaces to recruit and coordinate criminal activity.

He said security agencies have undertaken detailed profiling of the groups, including identifying their leaders, operational areas, and methods.

“What we normally do is very clear mapping where we identify those groups and even gang leaders, their telephone numbers, where they operate, and how they operate, and then we take care of them,” Kitiyo said.

The mapping exercise is part of a broader government initiative launched on October 15 this year under the Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) on insecurity and organised crime.

Kitiyo said the programme was designed to deliver quick, measurable gains in the fight against criminal networks through coordinated, multi-agency action.

“On October 15 this year, we launched a programme called RRI on insecurity and organised crime,” he said.

“We did the mapping to understand these groups, and that’s how we came up with the 126 groups.”

Following the intelligence phase, the operation has shifted to targeted enforcement.

Kitiyo said security agencies are now focusing on individual gang members and leaders, leading to a series of arrests in recent weeks.

“Now we are targeting individuals, and so many of them have been arrested, and we continue arresting them even now,” he said.

The RRI approach, according to the commissioner, goes beyond gang arrests to address enablers of crime within communities.

Kitiyo said authorities identified specific locations commonly used by criminal groups to plan, recruit, and hide from law enforcement.

“With that RRI, there are a number of things we were focusing on, including criminal gangs, cartels, illicit brew dens,” he said, adding that many gang members “hang around there.”

Pool tables and informal entertainment joints were also flagged as key congregation points used by criminal elements to coordinate activities and recruit young people into gangs.

Kitiyo said security teams have intensified patrols, inspections, and crackdowns in such locations as part of the wider operation.

Jukwaa la Usalama Report

The revelation comes days after a new security brief delivered to President William Ruto exposed a chilling reality: Kenya is facing an unprecedented surge in gang activity, with Nairobi alone hosting more than 130 active criminal groups, making it the country’s biggest breeding ground for organised crime.

The explosive Jukwaa la Usalama Report, compiled by security experts and intelligence analysts, paints a grim picture of a country where gangs, some barely known to the public, are tightening their grip on neighbourhoods, youth, politics, and even land ownership.

According to the report, Nairobi is now the epicentre of the crisis, with over 130 gangs involved in everything from petty extortion to political violence, kidnappings, murder, and election-related mercenary work.

“Some of the gangs are structured and highly organised, while others are amorphous groups that regroup only when hired for assignments,” the report states.

Among those listed are:

Jeshi Jinga

42 Brothers

M23

Kapenguria Six

Usiku Sacco

These gangs operate across estates such as Kibera, Dandora, Mathare, Kayole, and Mukuru, often controlling entire zones through fear and brutality.

Nairobi has continued to solidify its position globally after it was ranked among the best cities to travel in the world.

According to the latest survey released by Trip advisor, Nairobi has been ranked together with cities like Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Osaka in Japan, Johannesburg in South Africa and Casablanca in Morocco.

Nairobi has a national park, a large game reserve known for breeding endangered black rhinos and home to giraffes, zebras and lions.

Next to it is a well-regarded elephant orphanage operated by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Every year, Tripadvisor awards travellers’ favorite destinations, hotels, restaurants, and things to do around the world, based on reviews and ratings collected over 12 months.

The ranking comes at a time Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has on the forehead introducing policies that will attract more tourists in Kenya.

Just a few days ago, Cabinet approved a proposal to exempt travellers from all African countries from the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) as part of efforts to support open skies policies and tourism growth.

“This initiative aims to promote regional integration and ease travel across the continent. Most African visitors will be allowed a two-month stay, while East African Community (EAC) nationals will continue to enjoy a six-month stay under EAC free movement protocols,” the resolution reads.

Have you been drinking borehole water in Nairobi? Well, boreholes allow businesses and homes to access private water supply with no restrictions and fewer costs, but how safe is this water?

Kileleshwa ward Member of County Assembly (MCA)-cum blogger Robert Alai Friday morning sparked a debate when he advised Nairobi residents to avoid drinking borehole water.

Taking to his official Twitter account, Alai told people living in Nairobi to reduce the consumption of the borehole water, noting that it has been slowly killing people.

“The borehole water in Nairobi is killing you people. We must reduce the consumption of the borehole water. Please guys,” Alai posted.

The borehole water in Nairobi is killing you people.

We must reduce the consumption of the borehole water.

Please guys.
— Robert ALAI (@RobertAlai) December 9, 2022

But why do you think the politician-blogger is warning people to reduce the consumption of borehole water?

Well, a lot of companies such as farms, hotels or schools will use a lot of water each day, making a borehole a much more affordable option in the long run. Although all of this free water seems great, there are a lot of questions about it since borehole water isn’t cleaned in the same way that mains water is.

Mains water mainly comes from recycled wastewater which has been purified to be made safe for drinking purposes. Boreholes, on the other hand, get their water straight from the ground which won’t go through the same treatment processes as mains water.

Safety of borehole water

Do you live at an apartment? Does it have a borehole? You agree with me that most of the waters supplied in most Nairobi apartments are pumped directly from the borehole into the storage tanks then supplied in the houses for consumption.

Whereas you can drink borehole water, there are rules and regulations defining the parameters to look out for before taking borehole water for consumption.

Borehole water can only be fit for drinking once it has been tested and approved by a health officer.

Unlike mains water, which is actually 60% recycled wastewater, water from boreholes comes straight from the ground making it 100% fresh and natural.

However, since it is coming straight from the ground this means that it could possibly have higher levels of iron, magnesium, calcium or other minerals as well as some bacteria.

Most of these are harmless however, to vulnerable people like babies, it could have some implications on their health, which is why it is important to get the water checked before drinking it.

Treatment of borehole water

Most apartments in Nairobi that have allowed tenants to drink borehole water have been treating it by chlorination. But do you know that this still poses a danger to your health?

Various studies have found that chlorination without regulation is not good for human consumption.

Borehole water can cause high blood pressure

A Nigerian medical doctor once revealed that borehole water consumption can lead to high blood pressure.

Each borehole, if you have not greater than 75mg of chlorine per liter, it’s okay. But by the time it starts getting up to 200mg per liter, it will start giving you a salty taste.

Most Nairobi borehole waters are salty.

Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has dropped her quest to become the next Nairobi County Governor in the upcoming August general elections.

Instead, the former Starehe MP has opted for the Nairobi Senate seat.

She will now have to square it out with Karen Nyamu in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party primaries.

A leaked UDA party receipt that has gone viral shows that the Jesus Is Alive Ministries bishop had paid a total sum of Kshs. 125,000 as a nomination fee for Nairobi County senator.

Early February, the Nairobi gubermnatorial hopeful Senator Johnson Sakaja and Margaret Wanjiru brought a ‘Kenya Kwanza’ whistle-stop rally at the City Park to a halt after Sakaja’s supporters reportedly booed the woman of the cloth.

Bishop Wanjiru accused Sakaja of inciting his followers against her.

Sakaja did not address the allegations, but appealed to the crowd to allow all the candidates an opportunity to sell their agenda.

Wanjiru’s withdrawal from the gubernatorial race might have been influenced by coming together of the ANC, Ford Kenya and UDA parties to form Kenya Kwanza Alliance, which may prefer Sakaja.

A Nairobi police officer has been arrested after he allegedly pushed his girlfriend over a balcony from fourth floor of an apartment they were living.

According to reports, the officer who was on the run for two days surrendered on Sunday night and was escorted to Kasarani police station by his collegues who were privy to the matter.

The officer is said to have denied pushing the girlfriend in an incident that occurred on July 3, 2021.

According to Kasarani sub-county Commander Peter Mwanzo, the officer is being interrogated to determine what really happened as the girlfriend’s body awaits a post-mortem which is due on Tuesday July 06, 2021.

Witnesses said the middle-aged woman identified as Jackline Muthoni died after she fell on the rear windscreen of a salon car that had been parked outside.

She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). The main suspect in the incident managed to flee before the police arrived.

According to police, the officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters has been having domestic issues with the woman.

Most of the incidents are linked to mental issues, which are linked to the work of the police.

Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai launched a program to provide police officers with psychological assistance.

Dubbed “Muamko Mpya-Healing the Uniform” the program strives to create and hold safe spaces in police stations, offices, camps, colleges and communities thus enhancing peer to peer support for officers to feel safe enough and dignified to share their stories and experiences of stress, anguish and trauma in a confidential and non-judgemental environment.

A heavy down pour being witnessed across the country turned tragic in Nairobi’s Kibra slams on Thursday night after at least four people got killed by floods.

Reports indicate that the victims met their death after they were swept by floods while crossing Mutuine River in Kibra, Nairobi.

This followed heavy rains that were experienced in the city and it’s environs on Thursday evening.

According to witnesses, the four were swept away by the raging water as they tried to cross a bridge there.

Their bodies were however yet to be found on Friday morning.

A search and rescue mission was ongoing in the area with hopes of finding them.

Police and rescuers said they fear more deaths would be reported because of the floods that affected various informal settlements in the city.

Nairobi police boss Augustine Nthumbi said teams had been mobilized to help in the search and rescue missions.

He added they are conducting a survey to check the extent of the issue. Property of unknown value was destroyed in the floods that ensued.

Residents of some estates reported flooding in their areas which affected their operations.

Some residents were forced to endure long hours on the road while others were forced to spend the night on the road following heavy rains that continue to pound the capital.

The heavy downpour resulted in heavy traffic gridlock, flooded roads as well as cutting off of sections of roads making the movement of traffic a nightmare.

Motorists and commuters alike have had to suffer the consequences of the heavy rains with others forced to spend the night on the road.

The situation has been worsened by ongoing infrastructural developments going on across the city with the construction of the Nairobi Expressway playing a major role in the mess.

Motorists have been forced to wade through flash floods occasioned by heavy rains, with Kenya Meteorological Department warning the rains will continue throughout the week.

The deadly covid-19 variant that is outrageously sweeping lives in India found its way in Kenya earlier yesterday. The five traveling Indian workers tested positive after their samples were taken in Kisumu .

The B.1.617 virus has been noted to take less than five days and symptoms begin showing up with it mutating to remain active in the victims body . Indian scientists submitted to the genome sequencing data that the virus is the most prevalent. Ministry of health is tracking the about 100 people traced to have been in contact with the tested five.

WHO puts in record that to date a dozen countries have reported the variant with Kenya and Uganda amongst them. Uganda reported it’s first case a few days before Kenya. Because of global connectivity, it’s just a question of time. You cannot be able to put barriers to prevent a virus from accessing your territories” stated Dr Patrick Amoth .The statement is an urge for Kenyans to remain cautious.

The variant has marked 380000 infections and
3780 deaths in a single day worldwide. Kenyans express shocking concern on how the Indians found their way in Kisumu without getting tested at the airport.

The overwhelmed situation in india calls for other countries to manouvre keenly as the virus is furious.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Tuesday August 4, 2020 said he had endured one of the most difficult weekends.

Sakaja who was speaking on the floor of the senate said he was trailed by police officers the entire weekend.

At some point, the officers camped outside his home waiting to arrest him.

“On Friday, I was being trailed by police officers in a vehicle registration number KBZ 317W and I saw them and they left. I raised it with the IGP but he didn’t t respond,” Sakaja said on the floor.

Sisemi kitu….. pic.twitter.com/f9NVkhkgJS
— Mike Sonko (@MikeSonko) August 4, 2020

He narrated how he arrived in Parliament at 5am to escape an arrest that had been orchestrated to ensure he did not show up in the chamber for the debate on a motion that he had moved to amend the committee’s formula.

In the amendment, whose debate was adjourned last week, Sakaja is pushing for a formula that places the Sh316.5 billion allocated in the last financial year as the base.

Later, Sakaja told a local daily there was a plot to arrest him over his recent scuffle with Kilimani police officers for flouting the curfew.

“On Monday morning, I got out very early. I wanted to get papers at Total petrol station. When I got out, I saw a vehicle, then they put on the headlights. So, I said, let me move back. I went left and moved fast and switched off my phone, took papers and came back.

“In the evening, I was meeting some colleagues at Radisson. Senator Farhiya Ali (nominated senator from Nairobi) tells me that she was told I should not come to the chamber so that Beth Mugo votes on behalf of the Nairobi delegation. But I told her that I will. It was there that I learnt they didn’t want me to come to the chamber,” he was quoted by The Star.

The plan, according to the senator, was to arrest and detain him and charge him for allegedly assaulting Kilimani police officers.

But Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio and Majority Chief Whip Irungu Kanga’ta challenged those claiming intimidation and threats to substantiate.

A section of Kenyans on Twitter have reminded Nairobi governor Mike Sonko of his past, shortly after he threatened to take interior Permanent Secretary Karanja Kibicho to International Criminal Court (ICC).

Sonko through his social media handles Wednesday morning said that he was studying the Rome statues and engaging local and international lawyers to deal with those involved in the demolition of residential houses in Korogocho, Kariobangi North in Nairobi.

Sonko argues that such incidents have been happening under the instructions of PS Kibicho, Nairobi Regional Commissioner (RC) Wilson Njega and Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo .

Sonko says that the trio must be taken to ICC for breaching articles 1.5, 53 and 7(1)(k) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. He wants them charged with a serious crime against humanity.

However, a section of KOT have reminded Sonko of some of his past, which they now believe is haunting the embattled County chief.

Some reminded Sonko of the time he used to record phone calls between him and prominent people, arguing that should he not have done so, he would not not be facing all the problems that he is currently facing.

Some reminded him of the time he was demonstrating at the Hague, outside the ICC demanding respect for President Uhuru Kenyatta, at the time the head of state and his deputy William Ruto were facing a case at the court.

The embattled Nairobi boss has also been reminded of the time he poured raw sewage at the Jacaranda grounds in Donhom, just to prevent the then NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga from addressing a rally.

Here are some of the reactions.

Kenya has registered the highest number of Covid-19 cases in a single day.

On Tuesday May 5, the Ministry of Health confirmed 46 new cases of coronavirus disease, bringinging the total number of infections to 535.

Speaking during a press briefing on the Covid-19 situation in the country at Afya House, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said that the new infections are from 1077 Samples tested within the last 24 hours.

“Today our cumulative figure of those who have tested positive for the Covid-19 stands at 535 people. This is because out of the 1077 samples tested some 45 people have turned positive. This of course is the highest number recorded in 24 hours,” said CS Kagwe

Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate produced 29 of those new infections.

Mombasa produced 11 of the new cases, whereas Wajir recorded five new coronavirus infections. The five Wajir cases had a recent history of travel to Mogadishu, Somalia, said the CS.

A Somali national was the other new carrier of the virus, said the minister. Thirty (30) of the new cases were registered among male carriers, whereas female patients were 15.

CS Kagwe also revealed that nine new recoveries were recorded, bringing Kenya’s total number of discharged patients to 182.

Eastleigh, Kawangware and Mombasa’s Old Town areas have been marked as COVID-19 hotspots with total cases of 63, 24 and 39 respectively.

Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has send a strong message to people working at President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Harambee House office, whom he feels are intimidating him.

His message comes days after the embattled County chief faced humiliation from unnamed people who are close to President Kenyatta.

The Nairobi County boss last week had his security details withdrawn both from his Mua Hills home and his private office in Upper Hill, as well as having his Covid-19 sanitisation booths that had been installed in Nairobi CBD and Kibra vandalised.

Sonko in his Tuesday night message told his Harambee House friends that Power comes, power goes, power is temporary, and transient but the will of the people, and the will of God, is eternal.

I have a message to some of my friends at Harambee House who are drunk with power. Power comes, power goes, power is temporary, and transient but the will of the people, and the will of God, is eternal.
— Mike Sonko (@MikeSonko) April 28, 2020

He went ahead to remind them that in the 1990’s, Hon. Nicholas Biwott (RIP) was the most powerful man, probably across Africa, but before his demise, he used to sit lonely at a corner at the Serena Hotel, and very few people even bothered to say hi to him.

In the 90's, Hon. Nicholas Biwott was a powerful man. But the Supreme Will of God has never faltered, neither floundered
— Mike Sonko (@MikeSonko) April 28, 2020

He further reminded them of 2006, when President Kenyatta was the official opposition.

Sonko said that in 2006, there was a stand off between Hawkers and the Police, and President Kenyatta stepped in to help quell the crisis, but his efforts did not succeed after senior officers at the OP directed the then Nairobi PPO to instruct his officers on the ground to disperse the hawkers and the then the leader of official opposition Uhuru Kenyatta by tear gassing them.

By then, Sonko says, nobody knew that he would one day become President.

“Sometimes in 2006, there was a stand off between Hawkers and the Police. The current President stepped in to help quell the crisis, but his efforts did not succeed after senior officers at the OP directed the then Nairobi PPO to instruct his officers on the ground to disperse the hawkers and the then the leader of official opposition Uhuru Kenyatta by tear gassing them. Nobody then knew that he would one day become President,” he posted.

Sometimes in 2006, there was a stand off between hawkers and @PoliceKE.

This seems to be a clear message that as much as his intimidation continues, he will at some point rise to power in this Country, since the Supreme Will of God has never faltered, neither floundered.

Miguna Miguna has yet again been kicked out of a Nairobi-bound plane that was set to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday morning.

The airline says Kenyan authorities did not clear Miguna to enter the country’s airspace.

Miguna says Kenyan government has requested the airline to block him.

The controversial lawyer was set to land at JKIA, Nairobi, on Wednesday at 9:45am, on his return from Canada.

Earlier on Tuesday, he was blocked from boarding a connecting flight to Nairobi from Germany.

He said he had been stopped by Lufthansa airline officials from boarding the flight to Nairobi, where he was scheduled to arrive at 9.25pm.
