Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has sparked political speculation after meeting Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

Their meeting comes amid reports of widening cracks within the United Opposition led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a statement shared on his official social media pages, Matiang’i said the meeting was to commiserate with Munya following the death of his grandmother, Mama Mwakairu Rukunga, fondly known as Bamung’o.

“This morning, Trans Nzoia Governor H.E. George Natembeya and I met with former Cabinet Secretary Hon. Peter Munya to commiserate with him following the passing of his beloved grandmother, Mama Mwakairu Rukunga (Bamung’o),” Matiang’i stated.

This morning, Trans Nzoia Governor H.E. George Natembeya and I met with former Cabinet Secretary Hon. Peter Munya to commiserate with him following the passing of his beloved grandmother, Mama Mwakairu Rukunga (Bamung’o). pic.twitter.com/ylhM6MyCHl
— Dr. Fred Matiang'i (@RealMatiangi) October 8, 2025

While the meeting was presented as a condolence visit, political observers have noted that it comes at a time when internal tensions are reportedly emerging within the opposition coalition, with some leaders accusing others of disloyalty and covert political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general election.

Sources close to the Matiang’i and Natembeya camps suggest the two leaders have been in regular contact, with discussions revolving around building a reform-driven coalition that appeals to Kenya’s youth and working class—a move some see as a subtle attempt to reposition ahead of 2027.

Matiang’i, who has maintained a relatively low political profile since leaving government in 2022, has recently re-emerged in the national discourse as he popularises his presidential ambitions.

His public appearances with Natembeya, a vocal critic of President William Ruto, have amplified talk of a potential political partnership.

Governor Natembeya, a rising figure in Western Kenya politics, has also been viewed as a possible running mate for any opposition realignment that could challenge both the Kenya Kwanza administration and the increasingly fragile Kalonzo-Gachagua alliance.

The outgoing Cabinet Secretaries who have served from when former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s first Cabinet that was sworn in mid-May 2013, are set to pocket Sh20.8 million as gratuity payment.

This is after their employment came to an end when President William Ruto named his Cabinet that locked out Uhuru’s ministers.

Only Simon Chelugui survived as Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and SMEs while Monica Juma, who served in the Energy docket in the second term of Uhuru’s administration, was named the Security Advisor to President Ruto’s Cabinet.

SRC gazette notice

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in a gazette notice that set the pay details for the current administration stated that a state officer serving on fixed term shall serve on contract and be paid a service gratuity at the end of the term at the rate of 31 percent of annual basic pay for every year served.

As a result, Raychelle Omamo, James Macharia, Amina Mohamed, Fred Matiang’i, Najib Balala and Adan Mohamed who served in Uhuru’s government from 2013 will now pocket Kshs.20.8 million each.

Why Kshs. 20.8 million?

This means a Cabinet Secretary who served from 2013 and earned a graduated salary of between Sh792,000 to Sh1,056,00 took home Sh10.3 million in gratuity payment at the end of 2017.

In the second term where the Cabinet Secretaries earned Sh924,000 monthly, the individual will take home Sh10.5 million.

This brings the total amount that a Cabinet Secretary who served consecutively for the two terms to Sh20.8 million.

Those who took office in December 2015 following a shuffle such as Joe Mucheru will get a farewell package of nearly Sh15 million.

The Cabinet Secretaries who served only in Uhuru’s second term, and earned a monthly salary of Sh924,000, will each receive Sh10.47 m.

Ruto Cabinet

President Ruto named his 22-member cabinet on Tuesday which saw ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi appointed the Prime Cabinet Secretary, the position he had been promised when he joined Ruto to form Kenya Kwanza coalition.

Former central bank Governor Njuguna Ndung’u was nominated to lead the Treasury.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called for President Uhuru Kenyatta to fire Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i, his devolution counterpart Eugine Wamalwa and ICT’s Joe Mucheru.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday November 1, 2021, Cherargei claimed that the three cabinet secretaries are aiding the rigging of the 2022 general elections in favor of ODM leader Raila.

Cherargei who is Deputy President William Ruto’s staunch supporter said the cabinet secretaries who hold delicate positions in the government have publicly declared their support for the former Prime Minister.

According to the lawmaker, retaining of positions by the three ministers is the first path to unfair election results.

According to Cherargei, firing them will help maintain peace and integrity as the country heads to the next general elections.

“I want to request President Kenyatta that in the interest of the peace and integrity of elections in this country, they must be fired or given lighter duties. There is no way we can have the Minister of Interior, Defence and Information and Communications Technology support one candidate as we approach the General Election,” Cherargei stated.

He further noted that is unfair for the Ruto-led United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, and if the three retain their positions, there will not be integrity in the elections.

He also advised the ODM party leader to take the three ministers and make them his campaign managers, since they have openly declared their support for him.

The struggling Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) is now a special project for the government.

The government on Thursday decided to take over the company in a bid to deal with the mess that is choking the energy giant; by ordering detectives to uncover the mess in the parastatal.

The mismanagement affecting the national power supplier threatens to affect the fundamental sectors of the economy as electricity prices in Kenya becomes on of the highest in the world.

The government’s intervention seeks to save the company from the brink of bankruptcy and see all its operations from recruitment, management to procurement come under close watch.

This decision came shortly after a three-hour crisis meeting chaired by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, led by Kenya Power board Vivienne Yeda and acting Kenya Power acting managing director Rosemary Oduor.

Others are Energy Principal Secretary Gordon Kihalangwa, his Treasury counterpart Julius Muia and Anne Erickson a member of the presidential taskforce on the Review of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

Dr. Matiang’i ordered a forensic audit to unearth financial dealings that are similar to fraud and sabotage.

Given the task is a multi agency team comprising of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Financial Reporting Agency, Asset Recovery Agency and others.

This investigation comes after allegations that some workers are colluding with large electricity consumers to either lower or evade paying electricity bills.

The team will also investigate power purchase agreements that have punished consumers to expensive electricity bills, notorious multi-billion shillings tenders, inside trading, conflict of interests by top management of the company and other illegal dealings by its workers.

This comes several weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta created a taskforce to investigate and bring recommendations that would see reduction in the cost of electricity. The government ordered the company to reduce the bills by 33 percent within four months.

It’s a few days since the residents of Laikipia let out a sigh of relief after stability was brought in the areas. Various security personnel were deployed and brought little moments of relief, little did they know that the bandits would strike again.

Photo: Courtesy

According to a report from the police, the bandits managed to beat a security dragnet and stole livestock at Ndunyu Village in Kirima location on Thursday morning but luckily, no one was injured. The National Police Service has issued a statement that a team of security team comprising of the KDF and the NPS are pursuing the bandits in an attempt to recover the livestock.

The police also assured the residents of Laikipia that it will do everything possible to bring the culprits to book and warned anyone trying to disrupt peace in the area that their days are numbered. A fortnight ago, Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso said that bandits who had invaded Laikipia Nature Conservancy had been chased away with their livestock.

Security operations have been running in Laikipia to bring calm after weeks of unrest. The rebuilding of homes razed down by the bandits are also underway. Interior Cabinet Seretary Fred Matiang’i spent two days in Ol-Moran to oversee distribution of foodstuffs and building materials and he expressed confidence in all the operations meant to bring calm in the area.

The woman whose photos went viral on socila media after being roughed up by Interior CS Fred Matiangi’s security detail during a function in Ibacho, Kisii County on Wednesday, September 8 has come out to speak about the incident.

The woman only identified as Christine narrated that she only wanted to request the CS to transfer police officers from Nyaribari area.

Christine argued that there had been an increase in theft and attack cases in the area and that the police officers were not proactive when residents reported the matter.

“We have raised the issue with the County Commander and the County Commissioner on a number of occasions and asked them to transfer some police officers, but it is yet to happen,” she stated.

Christine said she believed that some of the police officers in the area were working with law breakers and covering up felonies, referencing a case where two headteachers were burnt beyond recognition in their houses.

“I was so shocked when I was beaten up by the security detail. I did not want to borrow money from the CS, but wanted to pass across the important information,” she continued.

Christine had managed to snake through Matiang’i’s security detail and made her way towards his helicopter in a bid to get an audience with him.

Kisii County Commander, Francis Kooli, with the assistance of his junior officers, however, moved in to block the woman from getting to the helicopter.

She was adamant but was outnumbered by the officers who frog-matched her to a nearby police vehicle.

“The police commander most likely knew what I was going to tell the CS because I had reported the issues to him a number of times. That could have been the reason why he beat me up.”

Further, Christine disclosed that CS Matiang’i knew her, adding that they once talked on phone.

“If indeed I wanted money from him, I would have just sent him a message because we know each other, but that was not what I wanted.”

Christine, however, urged the CS to help her get a job opportunity, revealing that she was a university graduate, having studied Sign Language.

Interior PS Karanja Kibicho has warned Deputy President William Ruto allies against insulting CS Fred Matiang’i.

DP Ruto’s confidants have been hurling insults against Dr. Matiang’i.

A section of Ruto’s allies, including Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi have been abusing Matiang’i and President Uhuru Kenyatta for some days now.

Kibicho, who was addressing the media from Kirinyaga County, said their remarks were baseless, adding that the Ministry was interested in serving Kenyans rather than politicking.

He endorsed sentiments made by Matiang’i when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security, saying that the ministry will continue with the rearrangement of security.

“There is a rise in personal attacks directed at some of us, I don’t understand how the politicians will benefit from such utterances,” Kibicho said.

Tangatanga launched the attacks after the CS listed what he claimed were Ruto’s properties and the number of the security detail attached to each.

They sarcastically welcomed the ‘lifestyle audit’, threatened to expose what they called “illegal land dealings by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family”.

Speaking while at Deputy President’s Karen Residence in Nairobi County, on Thursday, September 2, Ruto allies were livid at Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS), Fred Matiang’i, who gave an ‘exaggerated’ lifestyle audit of Ruto.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, his Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai have been summoned to appear before the National Assembly committee on administration and national security.

The trio is expected to be grilled over the drama surrounding change of Deputy President William Ruto’s security.

Last week, GSU officers manning DP Ruto’s Karen residence were withdrawn and replaced by administrative police officers.

Matiag’i was summoned to appear before the committee on Wednesday, September 1, days after the DP’s security was restructured.

Confirming the meeting, the Committee chairman, Peter Mwathi, noted that PS Kibicho, and IG Mutyambai, will also accompany Matiang’i to the meeting.

He further noted that all the three top security bosses have confirmed their attendance.

According to Mwathi, Members of Parliament will seek to establish the procedures and laws the top security organs used to downgrade Ruto’s security from the elite General Service Unit (GSU) to Administration Police (AP).

“We want them to shed light on whether the action they took is within the law, and if not, we will have no option but to ensure that the law is followed,” noted Mwathi.

The committee will also seek to establish the measures taken by the National Police Service to ensure that the DP is safe and his security is not compromised.

DP Ruto had initially protested the move, writing to the security bosses to explain the motive behind changes.

In a detailed letter addressed to the police boss, Ruto claimed that the new security detail, including the replacement of his personal drivers on Friday, August 27, might have been sent to his home with an ulterior motive.

It was reported that Ruto spent the whole day at his Karen residence.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has fired a tough warning to all social media users in Kenya.

Dr. Matiang’i while speaking at a youth forum Jumuiya centre in Limuru cautioned netizens over fake news, insults and vulgar language.

He said that although Kenya is a Democratic country, a section of users were abusing social media freedom by spinning fake news.

Matiang’i said social media users should exercise caution, especially since Kenya is just months away from its general election.

“The consequences of exceeding this freedom will be met with equal force,” Matiangi said.

He said Kenya is well prepared to conduct elections where no violence, displacement or destruction will be witnessed. He said the country had learnt from past elections.

“This forthcoming election will be a monumental one because there will be a transition.”

“We shall have the biggest number of youths taking part in this elections but we must remain on peaceful,” Matiang’i cautioned.

The CS further acknowledged that the Covid-19 pandemic was far from over and had affected many lives.

“We have lost many people. I have lost more than 10 chiefs across the country, trained educators and spiritual leaders. The threat is there and we should take all precautions to stop the disease,” Matiang’i said.

Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho has torn into Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua over what he claimed as peddling lies.

Kibicho who was speaking during a televised interview on Wednesday night also told the lawmaker to cease from dragging him and the interior CS Fred Matiang’i into his woes.

According to Kibicho, Gachagua who is allied to Deputy President William Ruto was using the PS and CS Matiang’i as decoys and scapegoats in the case.

Gachagua who served as Molo District Officer in the late President Daniel Arap Moi’s government was blamed for insinuating that the Interior Ministry was on a witch-hunt of DP Ruto’s allies.

“Gachagua is an old DO who used rungus during their regime. He has forgotten that when we changed the Constitution, everyone was poised to be accountable for their actions,” stated Kibicho.

“He keeps thinking that the recklessness continued. I want to tell him that it stopped. He needs to grow up and stop being reckless. He has issues with his own people of Nyeri who stated that he embezzled funds. Let him deal with that and desist from dragging Kibicho and CS Matiang’i in it.”

He, however, declared that no action would be taken against the MP as the Ministry had decided to avoid being dragged into the affair.

“That is what he is looking for. We will not engage him even as he keeps telling lies on TV,” the PS added.

Ruto’s allies were accused of creating tension in the country in an attempt to allegedly appease their master. Kibicho claimed that the MPs at times rushed to the DP with fake news and lies on how the police were planning to threaten or assassinate them.

Kibicho dubbed these politicians as reckless as they seize any advantage to push the DP to find relevance in their allegations.

Tuesday July 20, 2021 has been declared a public holiday.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i through a gazette notice number 7147 dated July 16, 2021 said the day will be used to mark Idd-Ul-Adha.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (2), as read with section 3 of the public holidays act, the cabinet secretary for interior and coordination of national government declares that Tuesday, 20th July, 2021 shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-Ul-Adha, 2021,” reads the notice.

Idd-ul-Adha is an Islamic festival to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son.

It also marks the end of Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca. It is one of the two Idd celebrations, Idd-ul-Adha and Idd-ul-Fitr, and is often considered the holier of the two.

Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared the Friday, 14 May, 2021 a public holiday.

Through a gazette notice No. 4205 dated May 5, 2021, Dr Matiang’i declared that the day will be a public holiday to mark Idd-Ul-Fitr.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Friday, the 14th May, 2021, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-Ul-Fitr,” reads the notice.

Muslim faithful across the globe have been marking the holy month of Ramadan began on April 12, 2021.

The holy month kicked off amid Covid-19 containment measures instituted that had been by the government in five counties, locking down Kiambu, Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos and Nakuru.

This denied the faithful an opportunity to commune together and hold the events that are associated with the Ramadan.

Scores of Muslims in the country are marking Ramadan in a disheartening mood due to the strict government restrictions that directs social distancing and less crowding in public places including mosques.

Ramadan is a month of fasting and socialization as well as helping the needy, however, with the pandemic which has been claiming lives of many in the country with containment measures enforced, this meant a change of activities that have existed since time immemorial.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s super Cabinet Secretary has been endorsed for presidency.

The Interior and National Coordination of National Government Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is slowly becoming a frontrunner in the upcoming 2022 presidential elections, with him getting endorsements from different communities.

Matiangi, who was in Murang’a to attend a thanksgiving ceremony for NCIC Commissioner Wambui Nyutu, was touted as the most fitting politician to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, long ahead of the general elections.

The tough-talking CS was also equated to the late Cabinet Minister John Michuki both in his performance of Cabinet duties and his loyalty to the president.

“The CS has been loyal to President Kenyatta, just like the late Michuki, who was obedient to retired President Mwai Kibaki,” Mt Kenya Foundation chairman Peter Munga said.

Former Jubilee vice chairman and a close ally of President Kenyatta, David Murathe, described Matiang’i as a performer and a worthy successor of Uhuru, whom he described as the best man to safeguard the interests of Kenyans.

Borabu MP Ben Momanyi, who has been leading calls for a Matiang’i presidency in the Kisii region, told the gathering that the Interior CS was ready for the task while asking the Kikuyu community to join the rest of Kenyans in pushing for his candidature.

“CS Matiang’i has the support from Western region of the country and especially his Kisii backyard, and the best lieutenant for Kenyatta,” he said as quoted by The Standard.

Speculation has been rife on whether the ‘super CS’ is planning for a presidential run following signals that he has secured the backing of two of the country’s most influential leaders, the president and ODM chief Raila Odinga.

The details emerged as Matiang’i and Deputy President William Ruto openly clashed, signalling the increasing bad blood between the duo — who could face off in the 2022 presidential duel.

Within Ruto’s camp there is growing anxiety that Matiang’i is being propped up by powerful people, including influential individuals within the First Family.

He has recently made several trips to Raila’s Luo Nyanza backyard in the company of several ODM leaders, launching a couple of development projects and presiding over fundraisers.

The CS has also taken up communal activities, visiting his rural Kisii backyard several times, in a strategy to rally the region behind him.

Since the March 2018 handshake, the CS holds Raila in high regard and has in various public functions heaped praise on him as a “statesman”.

Makueni County Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior has schooled Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i on rescue missions following the West Pokot landslide tragedy.

Matiang’i on Monday failed to land in West Pokot due to what he claimed to be inclement weather.

The Interior CS alongside Devolution CS Eugine Wamalwa and Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai were compelled to land at Eldoret International Airport while on their way to the affected areas..

State officers, including CS @EugeneLWamalwa, @IG_NPS, Rift Valley RC and I have been compelled to land at Eldoret Int'l Airport on our way to West Pokot due to inclement weather. We hope to make there soon to appraise recovery & response operations and make possible adjustments. pic.twitter.com/LJxfjwz4TK
— Dr. Fred Matiang'i (@FredMatiangi) November 25, 2019

However, Kenyans were bitter at Matiang’i for failing to land with a military chopper after Deputy President Dr William Ruto managed to land hours later using a private chopper.

Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior on Tuesday morning while replying to Dr Matiangi’s tweet asked him to watch the videos of the Brazil dam rescue mission early this year.

The senator says choppers were flying near touch down to rescue peole stuck in the mud sludge.

He further notes that the government of Brazil used all means possible to attend to its citizens, urging Kenyan government to learn to be sensitive.

Areas of Pokot South were over the weekend hit by mudslides which has cost 52 lives leaving several others injured.

It is a well-organised and complicated syndicate of cartels involving both senior and junior officers.

Top officers at the registration bureau have devised deliberate ways to delay or deny issuance of birth certificates.

As a result, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i says an ICT problem had been deliberately created to slow down or jam processes, creating an artificial backlog so that anyone who wants to be fast racked has to pay a bribe in order to jump the queue.

He said those who don’t, remain a frustrated lot, suffering the consequences of endless excuses and months of waiting for their documents.

To add an insult to the injury, the cartels conspire with various hospitals where corruption starts at birth.

In this regard, parents are lured into paying hospital administrators an exorbitant fee so that birth certificates are processed and distributed without scrutiny or authentication.

Dr Matiang’i, who, and his PS Karanja Kibicho, has been camping at the bureau for a week, on Friday said it was embarrassing to discover that a large number of Kenyans have had to encounter indignity in the hands of public servants.

“This racket primarily targets illegal immigrants seeking Kenyan citizenship through the backdoor,” Matiang’i said.

He said though these are two documents are critical documents in the life of citizens, the officers had conspired with IT staff to tamper with the ICT system.

As a result, some 24 senior officers have been arrested and will be arraigned in court on Monday.

Matiang’i said out of the 24 suspects, 20 are from various departments within the bureau while four are hospital staff from St. Francis Hospital.

This comes after two top officers from the department were last week interdicted over the same claims.

“We are here to demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that Kenyans get the service they deserve and shall not allow Kenyans to be preyed upon by corrupt individuals fleecing them at the most vulnerable moment of their lives,” he said.

Matiang’i was flanked by Kibicho, ICT CS Joe Mucheru, PS Jerome Ochieng’ and Inspector General of police Hillary Mutyambai.

“Government is about service delivery. We are to serve and not to humiliate and frustrate Kenyans. People cannot be lining here from 5 am and leave at 6 pm without being served,” he said.

Matiang’i said the cleanup will entail total a total overhaul of the system, which includes people, processes, procedures, hardware and software to improve accountability and efficiency of service.

He said amid efforts to clear backlog at the bureau, all Huduma Centre branches in Nairobi, now have the capacity to print Birth Certificates.

This means Citizens will no longer have to come to the Bishop house to receive follow up or receive their Birth Certificates.

Mucheru in his remarks said some 17 staff from the ICT ministry will be camping at the bureau throughout the weekend to ensure all services are digitised.

So far, Mucheru said since last week they have managed to digitise 32 million files.

He said they expect to clear the entire backlog before December 1.
