Manzur Okwaro

Harambee Stars utility player Manzur Okwaro has joined French Ligue 2 side Stade de Reims from Nairobi United.

Okwaro will join Reims on an initial six-month loan, after successfully passing his medical. However, the French club is obliged to make the move permanent at the end of the season, with a four-year contract already agreed upon.

The deal will be signed once the loan period concludes. Manzur Okwaro’s official unveiling is expected later in the day, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Okwaro was one of the outstanding players during Harambee Stars’ run to the quarter-final of the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN), in which he played as a central midfielder.

He is reported to have chosen Reims following advice from Harambee Stars Head Coach Benni McCarthy, who shares an agency with him.

Okwaro will become the latest Kenyan to feature in French football, joining fellow countryman Joseph Okumu at the Reims setup.

Capable of operating across the backline and in midfield, Okwaro’s adaptability, athleticism, and tactical discipline made him an attractive prospect for the French club as they continue to reinforce their squad for the upcoming campaign.

The move represents another positive step for Kenyan football, with more local talents securing opportunities on the European stage. For Okwaro, the transfer offers a platform to test himself at a higher level while continuing his development in a competitive football environment.

All eyes now turn to Reims, where the Kenyan international is expected to be officially presented and begin training with his new teammates imminently.

Job Ochieng

Harambee Stars forward Job Ochieng was included in the Real Sociedad matchday squad on Sunday as the Basque side secured a 2–1 victory over FC Barcelona.

The Kenyan attacker was named on the bench for the high-profile encounter, marking another important milestone in his development with the Spanish club.

Ochieng is currently attached to Real Sociedad B, where he continues to gain experience as he pushes for more first-team opportunities.

While he did not feature on the pitch, his inclusion in the senior squad underlines the club’s growing confidence in the young forward and highlights his progress within the Real Sociedad system.

The moment represents a positive step for Ochieng and adds to the list of Kenyan players making strides in European football.

Timothy Ouma

Polish giants Lech Poznań have demoted Harambee Stars midfielder Timothy Ouma to the club’s reserve team following a disciplinary breach, the club has confirmed.

Ouma was notably left out of Lech Poznań’s squad that travelled to Abu Dhabi for a mid-season training camp, with the club stating that the Kenyan international had “acted in a way that violated team rules.”

Speaking on the situation, head coach Niels Frederiksen revealed that the midfielder will remain in Poland and train with the reserves as the senior team continues preparations for the second half of the season.

“Timothy will stay behind and prepare for the spring season with the reserve team. His future at the club now depends solely on his performances,” Frederiksen said.

The decision represents a significant setback for Ouma, who had been pushing for a more prominent role in the first team after joining the Polish side. While the club has not disclosed specific details surrounding the disciplinary issue, the move signals Lech Poznań’s strict stance on player conduct.

Despite the demotion, the door has not been fully closed on the midfielder’s future at the club. Lech Poznań have made it clear that Ouma still has an opportunity to earn his way back into the senior squad through discipline, professionalism, and strong performances with the reserves.

For now, the focus shifts to how the Kenyan international responds to the setback — a moment that could prove pivotal in his European career and national team ambitions.

The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife has inked a
Sh 15 million sponsorship deal between Magical Kenya and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), aimed at promoting the country through sports tourism.

Announced by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, the partnership positions the Harambee Stars as ambassadors of Kenyan tourism on the global stage.

This bold move marks a significant shift in how Kenya markets itself internationally, tapping into the global appeal of football to attract a wider and younger audience.

The sponsorship will see Harambee Stars wear the Magical Kenya brand, offering visibility at major international matches and tournaments.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano hailed the partnership as a forward-thinking investment that goes beyond supporting the national football team.

“This sponsorship is not just about supporting Harambee Stars—it’s about leveraging the unifying power of sports to promote our vibrant culture, rich heritage, and diverse tourism experiences to the world,” Miano stated.

Kenya, long celebrated for its safaris and scenic beauty, is now looking to diversify its tourism offerings. Through this partnership, the country aims to blend the passion of sport with its natural and cultural attractions—from the iconic Maasai Mara to the pristine Indian Ocean coastline.

Miano emphasized that this is part of a larger strategy to position Kenya as a top global tourism destination. The Ministry is increasingly engaging with non-traditional tourism avenues, such as sports, film, and cultural diplomacy, to boost international arrivals and strengthen Kenya’s brand identity.

“This collaboration is just the beginning,” she added. “We look forward to working with FKF and other partners to create deeper global connections through sports and attract more visitors to destination Kenya.”

Harambee Stars, as national icons, offer a unique platform to showcase Kenya’s spirit, talent, and hospitality. The Ministry is confident that their international presence will inspire interest not just in football, but in experiencing Kenya’s landscapes, culture, and people.

This strategic alignment of tourism and sports marks a pivotal step in Kenya’s journey to becoming a multi-dimensional travel destination—one where wildlife, adventure, and now football, all play for the same team.

Patrick Matasi. PHOTO/FKF
  • One of Kenya’s most seasoned goalkeepers, Patrick Matasi, has had both incredible saves and dubious situations throughout his career.
  • Although he has frequently been a hero for the Harambee Stars, there have also been times when his goal-giving has raised questions among supporters and commentators.
  • Matasi is still an important player in Kenyan football in spite of these rocky moments.

After a video purportedly connecting former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi to a potential betting ring went viral, social media in Kenya has erupted in indignation.

In the video, an unidentified person—possibly a recruiter—gives instructions on what to do next, and Matasi seems to be listening and nodding in agreement.

The Kakamega Homeboyz FC goalkeeper, who also played for Tusker FC, AFC Leopards, and Saint Georges FC in Ethiopia, was recently let go by Kenya Police FC under unclear circumstances.

Fans have expressed their disgust and condemned the leaked video on social media.

However, key details remain unclear, including when the video was recorded and the identity of the alleged recruiter.

One of Kenya’s most seasoned goalkeepers, Patrick Matasi, has had both incredible saves and dubious situations throughout his career.

Although he has frequently been a hero for the Harambee Stars, there have also been times when his goal-giving has raised questions among supporters and commentators.

Here are five instances where Matasi’s on-goal performance was viewed as dubious or unpersuasive:

Patrick Matasi in Kenya vs Senegal – 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)

Matasi gave up three goals during the 2019 AFCON group stage against Senegal on June 30, 2019, however Sadio Mané’s second goal generated the most discussion. Mané scored with what seemed to be little effort after Matasi seemed to misjudge the ball’s flight. Matasi’s posture and response were criticized for being abnormally slow for a keeper of his quality. Kenya lost 0-3 during the match.

Patrick Matasi in Kenya vs Cameroon – 2025 AFCON Qualifiers

Matasi’s performance in this AFCON qualifier at Yaoundé on October 11, 2024, drew harsh criticism. The Cameroonian forward scored easily after he was caught out of position for the fourth goal and mishandled the ball into his own net for the second. Following this game, the then Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat made a suggestion that the goalkeeping staff might undergo some changes. Harambee Stars lost 1-4 during the game.

Patrick Matasi in Kenya Police FC vs Gor Mahia – FKF Premier League (2023/24 Season)

A low shot from outside the box slid between Matasi’s fingertips, resulting in a soft goal while he was playing for Kenya Police FC. His poor performance ultimately resulted in his benching in favor of Job Ochieng after the error caused Kenya Police to lose 1-3 in the match played on February 4, 2024.

Patrick Matasi in Kenya vs Egypt – 2021 AFCON Qualifiers

In the first few minutes, Mohamed Salah’s feeble attempt from a close angle somehow slipped past Matasi, resulting in a soft goal. Egypt had an early edge thanks to his poor decision, but Kenya was able to rescue a 1-1 draw in the match played on March 25, 2021.

Matasi in Ethiopia vs Kenya – 2018 AFCON Qualifiers

Despite the fact that this game finished in a draw, Matasi suffered a panic attack after misjudging a back pass and almost giving Ethiopia the lead. He took a long time to recover, and Kenya was lucky that the Ethiopian striker missed the goal in the match played on October 10, 2018.

Matasi is still an important player in Kenyan football in spite of these rocky moments. He now has the opportunity to repair his reputation and regain his position as Kenya’s starting goalie thanks to his recent transfer to Kakamega Homeboyz. Matasi has the capacity to recover and silence his detractors with the right help and guidance.
