Kibra by-elections date

Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has issued the procedure that should be followed in their upcoming Saturday 7 nominations ahead of Kibra by-elections.

The nominations that were to be held on 31st August were pushed to September 7 over lack of security personnel who were engaged in the census exercise.

The star had on Wednesday morning reported that ODM was considering a consensus in the Kibra primaries, a report that has been dismissed by the party.

The party through its official twitter handle on Wednesday asked Kenyans to ignore the story by The Star, saying that they are ready for the nomination exercise.

The party further noted that all candidates who were cleared for the nominations are also ready for the exercise.

“We are ready for the nomination exercise in Kibra this Saturday 7th Sept. 2019 at all @IEBCKenya gazetted polling stations. All candidates who were cleared for the nominations are also ready for the exercise. It is all systems go,” read the tweet.

The party further asked the media to stop speculations that are aimed at causing unnecessary friction and tension, arguing that the party has proper channels of communication and any information needed for dissemination should be sought from the SG, ED or the Director of Communications.

“The media should stop their speculative tendencies that are aimed at causing unnecessary friction and tension. We have channels of communication within the party and any information needed for dissemination should be sought from the SG, ED or the Director of Communications,” read the statement posted on twitter.

All the ODM supporters and members in Kibra constituency have been urged to prepare for the nominations exercise on Saturday. They should carry their ID and membership card to participate in the exercise.

“We urge our supporters and members of the party in Kibra Constituency as well as our candidates for the party ticket to prepare for the nominations exercise on Saturday, they should carry their ID & membership card to participate”

ODM further revealed that all party members are listed in the register and will be identified once at the polling station before taking part in the exercise.

However, Only ODM Party members will be allowed to participate in the nomination exercise in Kibra.

A section of Jubilee Party MPs has broken silence on the ongoing debate on McDonald Mariga’s ticket in the upcoming November 7 Kibra by-elections.

The soccer star was given a direct Jubilee ticket on Monday evening. But according to a section of leaders from the party, Mariga has been imposed on the party by Deputy President Dr William Ruto.

MPs Maina Kamanda (nominated) and Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) on Tuesday said they would back Opposition Chief Raila Odinga’s ODM candidate in the poll set for November 7.

Mr Kamanda said he would not allow Deputy President William Ruto to ruin the peace brought by the handshake between Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta with his “selfish political interests”.

Mariga on Monday denied claims that his decision to vie for the seat was influenced by Dr Ruto.He said he had sought the advice of people close to him before deciding to throw his hat in the Kibra by-election ring.

Kamanda yesterday dismissed the former footballer’s assertions, saying Ruto was using him as a pawn in his quest to face off with Raila in Kibra.

“The candidate Jubilee Party picked has been imposed on the party by Ruto. He is Ruto’s candidate and not Jubilee’s. I am for a candidate who will be announced by ODM,” said Kamanda.

He questioned Ruto’s keenness on having a candidate in Kibra, even after Jubilee decided not to field any in Ugenya, Migori and Embakasi South for the sake of the handshake.

As a result, the leaders have vowed to support the opposition in the upcoming by-elections.

Mr Kuria said Mariga was not suited to represent Kibra. He vowed to throw his weight behind Benson Musungu should ODM settle on him.

Kuria said Mr Musungu had lived in the sprawling informal settlement and understood it, adding that the handshake had freed them to support any candidate irrespective of the party.Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja was also cagey on who intended to back in the Kibra by-election.

He said he had hoped Jubilee would back an ODM candidate to continue the late Ken Okoth’s legacy in Kibra.“I had asked my party to back a candidate from ODM, but that request was declined. What I can say is that Kibra needs a good leader who can continue what Ken started,” said Mr Sakaja.

Soccer star McDonald Mariga’s Kibra MP candidature on a Jubilee party ticket has continued to raise more questions, with the latest being whether he is a registered voter or not.

The questions started on Monday evening after the President Uhuryu Kenyatta-led Jubilee party gave him the ODM flag to fly in the November 7 Kibra by-elections.

Details have however emerged that Mariga was listed as a voter in Kariakor only two weeks ago and may not be considered as a registered voter in Kenya just yet.

This is because, the updated register has not been gazetted as required by law.

The last time IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati gazetted the voter register was in 2017.

But Jubilee Party NEB chairman Andrew Musangi quickly dismissed the claims as rumours, insisting one only needed to register to be a voter.

“The law only says that one should be a registered as a voter not gazetted to participate in an election, either as a voter or as a candidate. The gazettement does not make you a voter. It is the act of registration that makes you a voter,” he was quoted by a local daily.

“Gazettement is only evidence, but if I register as a voter, you are given a voter’s card and this is what you walk with as a voter. So, these are rumours. And by the way, if there is an issue, the IEBC will communicate to us and we will respond as a party.”

There are also accusations that Mariga was just rigged in, being Deputy President Dr William Ruto’s preferred candidate.

On Tuesday, one of the Jubilee Party contestants in the just concluded nominations Morris Peter Kinyajui appealed against Mariga’s nomination, arguing that Mariga is not a registered voter.

“To make matters worse, the said selected person is not a resident or a voter of Kibra constituency and there are serious doubts whether or not he has ever voted,” he protested.

“His candidature will be an impossible sell to the people of Kibra given the calibre of MP we had in the immediate past.”

Party secretary-general Raphael Tuju confirmed to a local daily that an appeal had been launched.

Will Mariga’s journey to parliament be easy as thought?

Circumstances that led to President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee Party to land on McDonald Mariga Wanyama as its preferred candidate in Kibra by-elections has continued to stir different reactions among Kenyans.

Mariga on Monday evening was announced as Jubilee’s candidate, which the party through its NEB chairman Andrew Musangi said the decision was reached after a detailed interview.

The party initially had 16 candidates who presented them at the headquarters in Pangani, Nairobi for the interviews.

Besides Mariga, Morris Kinyanjui, Walter Trenk, Ibrahim Said, Doreen Wasike, Oscar Kambona, Bukachi Chapia, Jane Githaiga, Jack Owino, Elli Rajab and Daniel Aden were interviewed.

Others were Daniel Orogo, Ramadhan Hussein, Frank Amollo, Timothy Kaimenyi and Geoffrey Mwangu were interviewed.

However, accusations have now come out that Deputy President Dr William Ruto rigged in Mariga. Gabriel Oguda, a renown columnist says Doreen Wasike who was the Jubilee candidate in 2017, coming 2nd behind Ken Okoth was rigged in favour of Mariga.

The columnist has also accused Ruto of rigging in Mariga “simply because Mariga represents Ruto’s betting firm.”

“Doreen Wasike was the Jubilee candidate in 2017, coming 2nd behind Ken Okoth. She presented herself for vetting today, but Ruto rigged in MacDonald Mariga who has no political clout, simply because Mariga represents Ruto’s betting firm. You now know who’s been fighting women,” tweeted Gabriel Oguda.

Mariga will face ANC’s Eliud Owalo, Ford Kenya’s Khamisi Butichi and an ODM candidate. The Orange party will hold its nomination on Saturday.

The seat fell vacant following the demise of Ken Okoth who succumbed to cancer in July.

The Kibra parliamentary race is really hotting up after President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee party settled on soccer star McDonald Mariga as their candidate in the November 7 by-elections.

Barely hours after Mariga was given a direct ticket on Monday, Kenyans have taken to social media to weigh into his candidature.

According to Mariga, he wants to become the Kibra MP because he was born and raised in the area, but Kenyans on twitter have not failed to buy his idea.

They are now accusing him of being someone’s project, an idea that Mariga has refuted.

They are claiming that he was not born and raised in Kibra as he claims.

Activist Boniface Mwangi claims that Mariga is a project of Jubilee and Betin, a gaming and gambling company, which he has been severally used to advertise.

Newspaper columnist Gabriel Oguda has argued that Deputy President William Ruto rigged in MacDonald Mariga “who has no political clout, simply because Mariga represents Ruto’s betting firm.”

Others have argued that Kibra is and will always be a Raila Odinga’s zone citing that someone is trying to ruin Mariga’s football career.

They have argued that Mariga has done nothing fruitful to Kibra people throughout his successful football career.

“Kibra is and will always be a Baba Zone. Take your logic to the bank and tell me how much you can get. Now, Mariga… is someone trying to ruin him or just eat his money? Someone tell me, what this guy has ever done with all his millions? Kibra itamnyoa bila Maji na Sabuni,” tweeted one of the twitter users.

Do you think Mariga will win the November 7 by-elections against ODM and ANC candidates?

Soccer Star McDonald Mariga on Monday morning made a grand entry at Jubilee party’s headquarter in Pangani, Nairobi.

Mariga is among 16 aspirants who will be interviewed today for the Jubilee Party ticket to contest the Kibra parliamentary seat as focus now shifts to the elections board.

Mariga was escorted by a group of his supporters who carried placards bearing his name and Jubilee logo.

The supporters sang songs praising the player in luhyia’s famous Isukuti dance.

Some were heard singing “Mariga tukomboe”, which barely translates to Mariga save us.

If cleared, Mariga will be Jubilee Party candidate for Kibra constituency by-election scheduled for November 7.

He will face off ODM candidate who will be decided after the September 7 nominations, Musalia Mudavadi’s ANC Party’s Eliud Owalo and Moses Wetang’ula’s Ford Kenya candidate who is not yet to be unveiled.

The Kibra seat fell vacant following the demise of Ken Okoth who succumbed to cancer.

The much anticipated Kibra parliamentary race is becoming hotter and hotter as almost all major parties are now joining the race.

The Moses Wetang’ula-led Ford Kenya, the lion party has now joined the race.

Wetang’ula, the party’s leader on Friday disclosed that the party will be unveiling its candidate in Kibra by-election next week.

According to the Bungoma Senator, the party will consider a dynamic, young, professional, Kibra-born, grassroots operator who will carry on with the dynamic legacy left by Hon Ken Okoth.

Wetangula further disclosed that Ford Kenya is no stranger to the great people of Kibra.

He says Rt Hon Raila Odinga went to parliament for the first time in 1993 on Ford Kenya party.

So far, Raila’s ODM party, Musalia Mudavadi’s ANC party and President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee party are already in the race with ODM planning to hold its nominations on September 7.

Jubilee party has hence invited interested candidates to reapply for party tickets after it disowned its first list of nominees that had been presented to IEBC.

Former ODM leader Raila Odinga’s aide Eliud Owalo has revealed the reason as to why he is seeking to be the shield and defender of Kibra people ahead of the upcoming November 7 by-elections.

Owalo who defected from ODM to Musalia Mudavadi-led Amani National Congress (ANC) was unveiled on Wednesday at ANC’s headquarters.

Through a long post on his facebook page, Owalo has outlined the reasons that have pushed him to contest for the seat that fell vacant following Ken Okoth’s demise.

Owalo says that when he made the decision to present himself as a candidate for Member of Parliament for Kibra constituency, the first question that came to his mind was “why is it that despite 56 years of independence and various interventions costing billions of shillings from Government and NGOs; Kibra is still wallowing in abject poverty and disease with the people still living in despicable conditions of abject poverty?”

Below is the long post.

“WHY I SEEK TO BE THE SHIELD AND DEFENDER FOR THE PEOPLE OF KIBRA

Ladies and Gentlemen,I wish to clarify and confirm two issues which have been a major subject of speculation in the recent past.

ONE; that following my recent resignation from the ODM Party, I have since formally joined and become a dully-registered Life Member of the Amani National Congress (ANC) Party; and

TWO: That subsequent to the same, I will be seeking the ANC Party Ticket to run for the Kibra Parliamentary seat in the by-elections slated for 7th November 2019.

WHY ANC?

When I made the decision to present myself as a candidate for Member of Parliament for Kibra constituency, the first question that I asked myself was;

Why is it that despite 56 years of independence and various interventions costing billions of shillings from Government and NGOs; Kibra is still wallowing in abject poverty and disease with the people still living in despicable conditions of abject poverty?

It has become abundantly clear to me that there has been a problem with the approaches being deployed to resolve the problems facing Kibra and the entire issue of poverty in Kenya.

I concluded that Kibra is in part, a victim of doing things the same way for 53 years yet expecting different results. My well-considered opinion is that it is now time for a total paradigm shift.

We must stop looking at Kibra just as a slum but instead as the human resource backbone of Nairobi that it is; which then requires investment in skills development; healthcare; social services; security; welfare; housing and recreation, among other conscious and deliberate interventions.

Kibra is the home of the toiling and resilient men and women who carry the industries and factories of Nairobi on their backs for as low as Ksh.150 per day. The profit is obviously invested elsewhere; with none trickling down back to Kibra.

Kibra houses the most hardworking construction workers who build and maintain our roads, houses, bridges and railways in the scorching heat or biting cold every single day. The roads obviously lead elsewhere and serve other people. They do not bring wealth and prosperity to Kibra.

Kibra is the home of our shamba boys, maids, watchmen, ayahs, cleaners, boda-boda riders, makangas, mama mbogas and mkokoteni pushers. They have invested heavily in other people’s lives but unfortunately with little returns in their own households in Kibra.

Indeed Kibra is a significant player in Nairobi’s economy and part of its human resource backbone yet very little is invested back or even trickles down back to its residents. We have become a society that does not care about its human resource.

Kenya pursues a policy of trickle-down economics designed to empower the owners of capital who are then expected to invest and generate wealth that is subsequently expected to trickle down to the rest of the country, including those that toil at the lower end of the production chain like the Kiberans. This however does not happen.

Consequently, the bottom-line or net-effect is that the rich get richer while the poor get even poorer. That is how we end up with huge slums like Kibra waiting in vain for our National Wealth to trickle down to them.

Kenya’s Annual Budget of Ksh. 3.02 trillion is hardly trickling down to the poor resulting in our country becoming one of the most unequal societies in the world. The gap between the rich and poor in Kenya is widening everyday with the number of the super-rich millionaires being among the fastest growing while on the extreme opposite end, those living in abject and extreme poverty is also increasing at an alarming rate.

The people of Kibra have been patient for long enough waiting in vain for our national wealth to trickle down to them yet this hasn’t happened in 53 years. Instead they see one third of our budget (approximately Ksh. 1 Trillion) lost to corruption at their expense. From my perspective, they are now rightfully running out of patience. Something definitely has to change.

As a candidate for MP for Kibra I have an elaborate plan to shift this paradigm and change from the unsuccessful model of trickle-down economics to trickle-up economics whereby among other measures, I shall seek initiatives to empower the Kibra as is required for them to be fully functioning citizens in our society living happily in dignity and sharing in our prosperity.

In my view, an empowered, skilled and healthy citizenry in the middle and lower classes of society is the success that will trickle upwards in corporate balance-sheets in the form of higher performance and outputs by middle and lower level workers leading to higher profits. The trickle-up approach is therefore a potential game-changer for Kibra.

Achieving dignity and prosperity for Kibra requires partnership with a political party that has a shared vision and which is equally ideologically inclined towards shifting this paradigm.
The Amani National Congress Party (ANC) Party is a Social-Liberal Political Party. Worldwide, social liberal governments address economic and social issues such as poverty, health care, education and equity and focus on empowerment of the lower and middle classes through planned government and market interventions and policies towards equalization while also addressing the common good in harmony with the freedom of the individual.

Having carefully analyzed and interrogated the ANC policy documents, legislative agenda and ideology, I am convinced beyond any doubt that the ANC Party led by Hon. Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi offers the best vehicle for us to work together towards shifting the paradigm in Kibra and bringing about the much-needed empowerment of the people.

I have noted that the ANC Party has the most elaborate and appealing pro-poor policies. More appealing to me is Musalia Mudavadi’s mastery of Kenya’s economic issues and persistent proposals on feasible policy alternatives; his zero-tolerance to corruption; zeal for good-governance; advocacy for effective debt-management; concerns on inflationary tendencies and the high-cost of living index; and advocacy for the rule of law.

This is why I chose ANC. And this is why the people of Kibra should vote Eliud Owalo and ANC on November 7th.

AND, WHY SHOULD I SEEK TO BE THE MP FOR KIBRA ?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am a proud son of Kenya who envisages the best for our beloved Country. Over the years, I have served worthy causes by partnering with local communities in socio-economic activities and agents of real change in worthy political causes; with the ultimate objective of realizing a better, equitable and all-inclusive Kenya.

In Kibra where I first lived upon coming to Nairobi, and continue to maintain strong-links to date, I have first-hand experience of the plight and challenges facing the people. I therefore have a strong-will, conviction and zeal to make life more bearable for the good people of Kibra.

Even as an ordinary Kenyan citizen, the people of Kibra and the country as a whole have known me as a strong defender and advocate for basic human rights, the rule of law, widening of the democratic space and key agent for real-change.

Augmenting this is my passion and pursuit for sustainable economic empowerment of families in Kibra. It is my considered belief that I am focused and committed enough to providing fearless, participatory and impartial representation to all the communities of Kibra.

My view is that this by-election should and must be about ideas. When I decided to challenge the late Hon. Ken Okoth, I told him as much: that my challenge would be based on a contest of ideas. That position has not changed.

My overall Goal therefore is to provide effective and servant leadership that facilitates the protection of civic rights and uplifting of the standards of living of the people of Kibra. When elected as MP;I will pursue an appropriate Legislative Agenda that promotes full implementation of the 2010 Constitutional dispensation; with particular focus on Strengthening of the Devolved System of Government; Equitable Distribution of Resources; Good Governance; Inclusivity; and Promotion of the Rule of Law.

My Vision for Kibra is “An empowered, educated, healthy and compassionate Kibra community living in a decent, clean and secure environment”.

To realize this Vision; my Kibra Mission therefore is “To provide effective representation and facilitate the basic rights and needs of the Kibra people through servant and participatory leadership; strategic alliances; and relevant partnerships to empower and enhance the standards of living of the people”.

My Values are (i)Fidelity to the Rule of Law; (ii)Servant and fearless leadership; (iii)Active Public Participation; (iv)Integrity; and(v)Inclusivity and Impartiality.

Since I started partnering with the people of Kibra in various programmes and activities in the year 2013,I have not only aptly demonstrated my accessibility to the people of Kibra but also effectively espoused my empowerment Agenda. The Key Milestones in this regard are well-known to the Kibra people; and are available in my Kibra 2017 eliudowalo.comcampaign website; which is currently undergoing update.

My areas of focus upon being elected MP will be Democracy, Good Governance and the Rule of Law; Human Rights; Health; Education; Shelter; Youth and Women empowerment; Environmental management; Water and Sanitation; Security; Disaster response; Social security; and Sports.

Critical success factors for my Kibra Agenda include (i)Effective Strategic Planning: (ii)Effective Stakeholder engagement and Public Participation; (iii)Elaborate Strategic Alliances and Partnerships; (iv)Effective Resource Mobilization; (v)Good Governance; and (vi)Effective Performance Management Framework; while augmented by (vii) Effective Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting.

Hard working Kenyans living in Kibra are in danger of being evicted from their business premises to make way for these egocentric land grabbers. I commit that this will NOT happen under my watch. And it will NOT happen under my watch.

In the face of all unfolding circumstances, I will remain the Shield and Defender for the people of Kibra.

Let the people of Kibra decide.

Kibra parliamentary hopeful on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket Christone Odhiambo alias Kriss Darlin now says that he is ready to battle it out with anyone.

This comes amid possibilities that the ruling Jubilee Party could as well present a candidate in a bid to snatch the seat which has for years belonged to the Orange party.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, the deejay said that he is ready to battle it out with a Jubilee candidate, daring the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led side to join the race.

Confident of a nomination, in an interview on Radio Jambo’s Mazungumzo Waziwazi, he predicted that the introduction of a Jubilee candidate will make it even easier for him.

“Jubilee fielding a candidate will be even more helpful, they are welcome (Jubilee kuleta mtu itanisaidia zaidi, nawakaribisha),” he said.

On the other hand, he called upon the ODM to hold free and fair nominations, in a party that has repeatedly seen its primaries married with confusion and at times violence.

He declared his readiness to support whoever wins the party ticket, provided that the exercise is credible.

“If we lose in a free and fair way we will accept the outcome and back the winner (Tukishindwa na tuone ni free and fair tutakubali na tumuunge yule ameshinda),” he added.

Raila Odinga’s ODM party has planned to spend Sh10 million to conduct nominations ahead of Kibra parliamentary race.On Wednesday, the nominations that had been scheduled for Saturday 31st were postponed to September 7 over security concerns.

The party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna defended the high budget, saying the money was meant to make the contest free and fair.

“We want to run a free and fair democratic contest. Each of the candidates cleared will be given an equal chance to prove his popularity without any interference,” said Mr Sifuna.

Sifuna also revealed that ODM had handed the names of 11 candidates cleared to run in the primaries to IEBC.

He noted that since the party has been blamed for holding shambolic nominations in the past, a situation that led to an exodus of some of the candidates to other parties, ODM will this time be keen to avoid such a scenario.

“We are not going to entertain chaos. If you try to cause chaos we will de-register you from the party. You must conduct yourselves with utmost civility,” Sifuna told the candidates.

Those cleared are Christone Odhiambo, popularly known as DJ Kriss Darlin, Peter Ochieng, Tony Ogola Sira, William Ayacko and Stephen Okello.

Others are Bernard Otieno, Eric Ochieng, Brian Owino, John Otieno, Benson Musungu and Patrick Lumumba Owade. The by-election will be held on November 7.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Ken Okoth on July 26.Sifuna reiterated party leader Raila Odinga’s remarks that the exercise will be free and fair, and urged candidates to promote party values.

Soccer Star Dennis Oliech has dismissed his Gor Mahia contract termination letter insisting that he is still a Gor Mahia player.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Nation Sports, Oliech revealed that the main reason for not attending training is because of an injury he has been nursing on his fractured hand suffered at the end of last season.

Gor Mahia while terminating his contract stated that he had committed a gross misconduct, among them being not attending training and that the team was not aware of his whereabouts.

“These stories you have been hearing are all lies and the truth of the matter is that I have never recovered from the injury on my hand that fractured, the bandage was just removed two weeks ago.The team manager has only called me twice contrary to what is being said and even if I didn’t pick he could have texted me. I trained with Gor Mahia twice after they returned from Burundi and after advice from the doctor I had to stay away, the team manager knows that,” said Oliech as quoted by the Nation.

He insisted that he is still a Gor Mahia player and blamed the club for not being patient with him as he recovers from his injury.

He further alluded the termination of his contract to reports that he intends to vie for the vacant Kibra parliamentary seat in the looming by elections and revealed that the issue is being used to victimise him for being at the fore front in agitating for players’ rights concerning the salaries and other issues of mismanagement at the club.

The race for the vacant Kibra parliamentary seat is getting hotter as days continue elapsing. As Raila Odinga-led ODM party continues to await its nominations for them to decide on whom will bear its flag, some parties have already unveiled their candidate.

Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC) on Wednesday unveiled former Raila’s aide Eliud Owalo as their candidate in the upcoming by-elections.

Just recently, Owalo ditched ODM for ANC in readiness for the race.

Owalo will face Jubilee and ODM candidates in the November 7, 2019 mini polls.

ODM will unveil its candidate after their nominations that have been scheduled for Saturday 31st.

The ruling Jubilee party will also unveil its candidate once it settles its matters regarding the same. The party through its Secretary General Raphael Tuju on Monday disowned a letter bearing the list of aspirants that had been submitted to IEBC.

It has not submitted another list. The disowned list bore the names of soccer star McDonald Mariga, Morris Peter Kinyanjui, Walter Trenk, Said Ibrahim and Doreen Wasike.

The Kibra MP seat fell vacant following the demise of Ken Okoth who succumbed to cancer in July.

Jubilee’s Youth League President, Gideon Keter, has endorsed soccer star, McDonald Mariga, for the much hyped Kibra MP race.

Through a tweet, Keter has claimed that Mariga is just like any other youth in Kenya and if at all he declares his interest to contest under Jubilee’s ticket, then he has his full blessings.

Keter’s endorsement comes as Mariga is drawn at center of the Jubilee’s infighting. This follows IEBC action to return the letter which Mariga was listed among the five candidates to represent the party in Kibra race.

IEBC was compelled to return the letter after the Party disowned it terming it fake.

But the letter has been strongly defended by Ruto’s camp. Dennis Itumbi, who is a close associate of Ruto, has been sharing several tweets that confirm Mariga is a registered Jubilee member and that he was among the individual picked by the party to vie for Kibra MP seat.

This infighting in the Party has forced Ruto to intervene by blasting Standard Newspaper for propagating rumors meant injure Jubilee’s reputation and escalate the matter.

According to an exclusive report by The Standard, Deputy President William Ruto’s camp which favours Mr Mariga’s candidature – sensationally claimed that their rivals in the ruling party, led by Tuju, had hatched a plot to field a weak candidate for the Kibra election in order to help opposition leader Raila Odinga’s ODM candidate win.

The Mariga candidature has caused a debate, with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s wing of the party insisting that it was in charge of party affairs even as it accused Ruto’s side of pushing for Mariga’s candidature through a fake list of candidates published on Monday evening to hoodwink the electorate.

Jubilee’s candidate is expected to face off with Raila’s ODM candidate in the upcoming November 7, 2019 by-elections.

ODM will hold its nominations on Saturday 31st to get the party’s flag bearer in the mini polls.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party on Monday cleared 20 candidates who are set to battle in the forthcoming nominations ahead of the Kibra parliamentary by-elections.

The party’s National Elections Board vetted the 20 candidates ordering them to pay a nomination fee of Ksh 250,000 by today(Tuesday) noon.

However, Kenyans on twitter have caused a storm after they argued that one of the contestants in ODM’s nominations scheduled for Saturday 31st August is a renown goon.

Kicking off the debate, controversial blogger Robert Alai asked the party through its official twitter handle if criminals have the right to vie.

On Monday, another controversial blogger, Disembe Dikembe endorsed Brian Shem Owino, whom Kenyans are opposing following his criminal record.

In May last year, Mr Owino was a wanted man by police over an assault case. He was accused of assaulting a Nairobi businessman Timothy Muriuki.

Brian Shem Owino surrendered to police at Nairobi Area DCI hours after he and his accomplices lost a bid to stop their arrest. He was taken in for questioning and possible prosecution.

Nairobi DCI Nicholas Kamwende and his lawyer Edwin Sifuna confirmed Owino’s surrender.

Edwin Sifuna is the ODM secretary general, who on Sunday during the unveiling of the candidates at Kamkunji grounds in Kibera insisted that he was not going to allow any arrogant people to vie.

Owino and his four accomplices had moved to court seeking protection. Sifuna secured his release.

They were captured on camera manhandling the former Nairobi Central Business District Association (NCBDA) chairman at Hotel Boulevard on April 30.

They had moved to court saying their personal security was at risk and that they could be eliminated by the police or deported to an unknown destination on the fake grounds they are not Kenyans and sought anticipatory orders pending their arraignment.

But the court declined to issue the orders and ordered them to appear before police for processing. They said they were ready and willing to surrender to the police but were apprehensive of their personal security and that their anticipated charges were defective, had no basis in law and  were unconstitutional and unsustainable.

Brian Shem Owino will face other candidates in ODM nominations and if he makes it, he will carry the ODM flag and face other party’s candidates who among them are candidates from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee and Musalia Mudavadi’s ANC party.
