Is Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i the second most powerful government official after President Uhuru Kenyatta?

Well, his recent official activities have kept Kenyans speculating about the most hyped 2022 succession politics.

On Monday, Dr Matiang’i officiated a passing out parade for 1,224 officers who have completed a standardization course at Kiganjo as part of the reforms agenda for National Police Service.

During the event, Matiang’i inspected the parade, something that the president has been doing over a long period of time, being the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Matiang’i has on several occasions been speculated of being prepared by President Kenyatta and his ODM counterpart Raila Odinga for the top most political seat come 2022.

And are these photos revealing anything about that?

Image

Well, early this year, Matiang’i was given powers that raised him to being the most powerful Cabinet Secretary who is in charge of launching government projects and chairing cabinet sittings.

This move was he talk among Kenyans, with many believing that Deputy President Dr William Ruto had been sidelined and left with no powers and duties other than politicking.

The DP is one of the most top 2022 presidential candidates. Are these powers given to Matiang’i sealing Ruto’s 2022 fate?

Well, former statehouse employee who is now based at DP Ruto’s Harambee Annexe office Dennis Itumbi on Monday evening shared one of Matiangi’s photos in a picture tweet that turned out to be a talk among Kenyans.

Many Kenyans while reacting on the photos believed that Matiang’i is the newly coronated King.

Some argued that Matiang’i is the incoming President after the end of President Kenyatta’s term in 2022 basing on the role he played during the pass out parade in Kiganjo.

Here are some of the reactions.

Mzee Jackson Kibor, the founder and CEO of the famous Men’s Conference has torn into Trade and Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya over his Friday tweet that seemed to have been directed at Deputy President Dr William Ruto.

Munya on Friday afternoon was in a bitter exchange with Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah over the fate of farmers who are decrying the price of milk.

Ichung’wah who had commented on a story ran by Daily Nation about the farmers pouring their milk over poor price and inaccessibility to the market was tackled harshly by Munya who termed him as a rent seeker.

Munya accused the MP of rent seeking and speaking on behalf of Deputy President William Ruto.

The tweet, which the CS later deleted, hit out at Ichung’wah over his criticism of the dairy sector.

But a seemingly angry Mzee Kibor has blasted Munya, arguing that he was coming too close to a red hot iron.

Kibor argues that Sugoi is not a place Munya can just mention in vain.

He has cautioned Munya to watch his mouth before altering words.

“Peter Munya, or whatever you call yourself, you’re coming too close to a red hot iron. Take this pill and sleep, Sugoi is not a place you mention in vain. Though I know your mouth is never closed. Watch your mouth or watch with your mouth,” tweeted Mzee Kibor.

Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has endorsed Depurty President Dr William Ruto for 2022 presidency.

The former Senator said Ruto was best suited to head the country come 2022 and that he would support the DP’s campaign.

Muthama says Ruto is best suited to lead the country in 2022.

He has also announced his political comeback in the next general election.

Muthama has been a close ally and supporter of Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka and was key in financing the NASA campaign team in 2013.

He previously financed the unsuccessful CORD campaign in 2013 as well as oiled Musyoka’s presidential campaign in 2007.

However, in the run up to the 2017 General Election, Muthama fell out with Musyoka over administration of nominations in the Ukambani region where the Wiper Party was popular.

As a sign of rebellion against Musyoka, Muthama declined to defend his Machakos Senatorial seat but remained a key player in the NASA campaign team.

Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi has opened up on how he was duped by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy Dr William Ruto ahead of 2013 general elections.

In his book, Soaring above the Storms of Passion, Mudavadi recalls in his autobiography how Uhuru and Ruto drove to his compound one morning after he had launched his campaigns on a UDF ticket.

“Our domestic detail announced that Uhuru and Ruto were outside. They wanted to see me. I ushered them in at once,” the former Deputy Prime Minister writes in his book.

He says that without prompting, Uhuru and Ruto told him they wished to pull out of the poll because of the crimes against humanity charges they were facing at the International Criminal Court.

As such, they wanted Musalia to be their joint presidential candidate against ODM leader Raila Odinga, then Prime Minister.

“In short they were asking me to join them in the election effort. They were concerned that the ICC saga could come in their way,” he recalls.

Surprised by the turn of events, he asked Uhuru and Ruto to allow him to invite a few of his close associates.

He invited the current UNCTAD Secretary General Mukhisa Kituyi, ex-Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale and lawyer Dan Ameyo “to come in as my witnesses”.

“A quick one-page memo of understanding was drawn. We agreed to dialogue further and flesh out a more detailed memorandum,” Mudavadi writes.

Uhuru asked for a few days to fill his people in on this new development.

“It was agreed to give him two or so days. Meanwhile, we would all get busy behind the scenes, laying out a formidable campaign plan,” he says.

However, within no time, the top-secret meeting had spread far and wide, including in the mainstream media that Uhuru and Ruto had pulled out of the race.

Mudavadi recalls that after two days, they saw an angry Uhuru recant the deal on national TV.

Uhuru, Musalia writes, claimed he had been “misled by demons” and that he was still very much in the race.

“The demons were cautioned not to try and reap where they had not sown, or gather where they had not scattered. We understood we were the demons. I have wondered often times how we became demons when we never invited anybody into our space to ask them to step down for us,” he laments.

For the first time, Mudavadi says the Uhuru, Ruto support that never was almost ruined his campaign’s momentum.

He says several MPs asked him if it was better to throw his weight behind another formidable candidate like Raila.

“It was suggested that we were now on a lost cause,” he recalls.

In the book, Mudavadi also says he remains indebted to Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni who accepted to be his running mate.

Kioni comes from Uhuru’s Central backyard and Mudavadi reckons his decisions was a big political sacrifice considering Kenya’s ethnic contours.

President Uhuru Kenyatta alongside Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday received the much anticipated Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.

The report was handed over to duo at State House, Nairobi in presence of Deputy President William Ruto.

The report, among other issues recommends a President, with executive authority who will be directly elected by the people, with the loser in the State House contest directly nominated to Parliament and takes over as leader of official opposition.

On the structure of government, the BBI team recommends what it termed “a home grown and inclusive” system, that comprises an executive headed by a popularly and directly elected President, and a robust, structured opposition that holds the government to account.

This has seen a section of MPs allied to DP Ruto change tune, and publicly declare their support for the report after strongly criticizing it.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa who has been a great critic is among Tanga tanga members who have publicly declared support for the report.

He says that the report has avoided divisive referendum and reckons that the issues raised can be prosecuted through the parliamentary process .

“Now the BBI Task force has avoided the divisive referendum and reckons that the issues raised can be prosecuted through the parliamentary process.I wish to declare my support for this report,” he tweeted.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, who has also been a strong critic of BBI said ” So far so good, Twende Kazi”.

The much anticipated Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report was on Tuesday finally handed over to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga.

Deputy President Dr William Ruto was present at Statehouse during the handover.

His dream to clinch the topmost seat in 2022 might come to pass, but what awaits him after the BBI report?

Well, the report recommends a President, with executive authority who will be directly elected by the people, with the loser in the State House contest directly nominated to Parliament and takes over as leader of official opposition.

On the structure of government, the BBI team recommends what it termed “a home grown and inclusive” system, that comprises an executive headed by a popularly and directly elected President, and a robust, structured opposition that holds the government to account.

The Executive, according to BBI, should include the President, a Deputy President, a Prime Minister, and Cabinet Ministers. The president shall have garnered at least 50% plus one vote in the State House race, and at least 25% of total votes cast in at least 24 counties.

The President, according to the report, shall remain Head of State and Government, and Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces.

The Deputy President, according to BBI report, remains the President’s principal assistant, and running mate at the ballot.

The proposed Prime Minister in the BBI report shall be an elected member of the National Assembly. The President shall nominate a Prime Minister, whose appointment must be approved by the National Assembly.

The Prime Minister, according to the BBI report, shall control and supervise execution of day-to-day functions and affairs of the government. The Prime Minister shall also, be leader of government business in Parliament and chair of Cabinet Sub-committees.

The BBI report recommends Principal Secretary in the Prime Minister’s office, to chair the technical implementation committee that shall comprise all principal secretaries.

The report also proposes the return of Prime Minister’s time, where MPs can pose questions directly to the premier and cabinet ministers.

And in response to the ‘winner takes it all’ mantra that was cited as one of the key causes on bitterly contested elections, BBI has recommended that the loser in a presidential election be nominated to the National Assembly and takes over as leader of official opposition.

It is not less than once President Uhuru Kenyatta has gone or spoken against his Deputy President Dr William Ruto. The two have on several occasions differed on different issues.

On Friday during his meeting with Mt Kenya leaders at Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County, President Kenyatta noted that he had for once witnessed the most peaceful campaigns in Kibra constituency, contrary to his deputy who has been attacking ODM leader Raila Odinga over what he claims to be violence witnessed during the just concluded Kibra by elections.

Well, President Kenyatta is again said to be dodging pressure from his deputy to have a major cabinet reshuffle.

It’s understood that Uhuru has been showing reluctance towards the topic even as Ruto camp insists on the need to effect a reshuffling that would also pave way for a new person at the Treasury docket.

The Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, Ukur Yatani has been the acting CS National Treasury and planning since Henry Rotich was dropped on corruption allegations.

According to a local daily, Ruto has been arguing that Yatani is overburdened by the virtue of holding the two sensitive dockets.

However there are talks that, the DP is ordinarily pushing for his tribesman man to assume the position, which according to him is a reserve for the  Kalenjin, as dictated in the power sharing agreement between him and President Uhuru.

Mt Kenya Council of Elders has asked Deputy President Dr William Ruto to pick Agriculture cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri as his running mate ahead of 2022 President Uhuru Kenyatta succession battle.

The council through its chairman Paul Mwati said Kiunjuri has all it takes to be the running mate of Ruto.

“Kiunjuri is no doubt a career and seasoned politician who joined active politics in 1997 as a MP for Laikipia East at a tender age of 30 years and for all these years, he has made a name on Kenya’s political landscape as a fearless and candid speaking political leader,” noted Mt Kenya Council of Elders boss, Mwati.

He advised Uhuru Kenyatta to begin grooming a spokesman for Mt Kenya communities and in this case, Kiunjuri is the first among equals because in terms of leadership and experience, he is shoulder and head above many other politicians in the region.

Mwati added that if the president fails to pick a spokesman for the communities in Mt Kenya region at the right time, there is a likelihood he might leave them as political orphanage upon his retirement after the 2022 transitional election cycle.

State House digital strategist Dennis Itumbi forwarded fabricated letter alleging there was a plot to kill DP William Ruto to a WhatsApp group called Tangatanga, a witness has told the Court.

Noah Keino, a clerk at the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), told the Milimani Court on Wednesday that Itumbi posted the said-letter in late May 2019, but he [Keino] is not sure whether it was Itumbi who authored the letter.

Keino said he had seen the letter posted in three other WhatsApp groups, and, therefore, he couldn’t say with certainty that Itumbi was the source of the alarming message.

Keino, who is an administrator of the Tangatanga WhatsApp group, said the network was created for Ruto supporters to exchange ideas on how they can boost his 2022 presidential bid.

Itumbi is accused alongside one-Samuel Gateri of authoring and circulating an alarming letter that alleged that there was a plan to assassinate DP Ruto in order to stop him from ascending to presidency in 2022.

The two were, on July 22, 2019, charged with publishing a letter dated May 30, 2019 with the aim of causing anxiety to the general public. They denied the charges.
