The battle to succeed Didmus Barasa in Kimilili Constituency is rapidly taking shape, as the incumbent shifts his political focus toward the Bungoma gubernatorial seat. Amid this transition, fast-rising contender Abdul Aziz Mulama has seized the moment to consolidate his grassroots support with a bold show of political and economic influence.

Against the backdrop of shifting alliances in Bungoma County, Mulama’s latest engagement went beyond a conventional political rally, positioning itself instead as a strategic grassroots intervention. The initiative saw more than 50 Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and 40 self-help groups receive essential equipment and financial support aimed at fostering economic independence.

The development comes just weeks after Mulama faced significant legal challenges following his arrest over assault allegations, claims his supporters have strongly dismissed as a “political witch hunt.”

Speaking at Amutallah Stadium, a visibly emotional Mulama recounted his time in custody, describing the experience as both difficult and spiritually strengthening. “I am here today because of your prayers,” he told the crowd. “The best way I can show my gratitude for the support you gave me during those dark days is to invest back into your hands. This empowerment is my ‘thank you’ to the people of Kimilili.”

The empowerment package was strategically designed to address the immediate economic needs of vulnerable populations through a multi-sectoral approach. Beneficiary groups received high-quality tents to support community events and income-generating activities such as rentals. This was complemented by a strengthened table banking model, providing revolving funds to women’s groups and self-help initiatives to scale up micro-enterprises.

These efforts build on Mulama’s existing track record in agricultural advocacy, following earlier interventions that supplied farmers with seeds and other essential inputs to boost food security and improve rural livelihoods.

As the 2027 general election draws closer, the political landscape in Bungoma County is becoming increasingly competitive. With the current MP eyeing the gubernatorial seat, Kimilili Constituency has emerged as a key political battleground.

Even so, Mulama used the platform to advocate for a shift away from confrontational politics. He called on his rivals to prioritize peaceful campaigns anchored in dialogue and mutual respect.

“We can only have a voice if we act,” he said, directing his message to young people. He urged them to take advantage of ongoing voter registration drives. “You cannot demand desirable leadership if you do not have the power to vote for it. Go and register, let your thumb do the talking in 2027.”

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has offered his latest salary of Kshs. 1 million to his constituents.

Taking to his official social media accounts on Friday October 7, 2022, the controversial lawmaker said that he was elected to work for his people but for the past one month, he has not done anything.

According to Didmus Barasa, he doesn’t deserve a salary for failing to work after being re-elected in the August 2022 polls.

He advised his constituents that they should approach him at take all the one month salary should they spot him in Kimilili.

Barasa noted that the Kimilili constituents should take the money and share among themselves.

“My people of Kimilili, mulinipigia kura nashukuru. Tangu munichague hakuna kitu nimewafanyia. Sisitahili mushahara wowote, sasa ile millioni moja nimelipwa ya mwezi hii nitawaletea. Mukiniona tu nimeingia kimilili mukuje muchukue na mugawane,” tweeted the MP.

Barasa was accused of shooting his opponents aide dead on the elections day.

He was arrested and appeared before a Kakamega court where he was charged with murder.

The lawmaker, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Barasa had been in police custody for two weeks. He said to have committed the offence against Brian Olunga, an aide to Kimilili politician Brian Khaemba on election day.

He had been detained at the Kisumu cells where he appeared in court virtually and the court allowed police to detain him for two weeks ahead of plea taking.

This was to allow police conduct postmortem on the body and collect other needed evidence for the case.

He was also taken for medical tests after which officials said he would take plea at a Kakamega court.

An autopsy on the body of Olunga showed he died of a pistol bullet which struck the right side of his head.

The autopsy showed Olunga died of profuse bleeding when the bullet got stuck in his head.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has dragged Azimio La Umoja Presidential candidate Raila Odinga into his car saga that had sent him into hideout.

The controversial lawmaker had early this week ran into hiding after police officers stormed his Nasianda home in Kimilili constituency after they got tip off from the members of the public that the lawmaker had turned a CDF vehicle into a campaign vehicle.

The officers impounded the vehicle, a ford ranger double cabin pick up belonging to Kimilili CDF that the lawmaker had already rebranded with UDA party colors.

He had also fixed the vehicle with fake registration number plates.

But on Wednesday May 25, the lawmaker came out of his hiding and joined a UDA campaign trail in Western Kenya that is being led by ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetangula.

Didmus called on the government and the police to instead go after Raila whom he alleged that has been using government vehicles when he has never been elected to hold any government office.

Speaking in Sirisia market during the Kenya Kwanza rally, the angry lawmaker said that instead of the police following him up for changing the government vehicle’s number plate and branding it with United UDA colors for campaign purposes, they should shift their focus on Raila Odinga whom he alleged that he is using over 20 government vehicles for his campaign.

The police had on Tuesday 24th of May 2022 raided his home to get the car but they were denied access to the compound but forced their way in and took the car and drove it to the police station in Bungoma town.

Barasa went ahead to say that he bought the car as an MP in his constituency and he has every right to use it in whatever way that he wants.

“56 police were sent to my home because I am using the CDF car, I am the sitting MP, I was elected by the people and so I have the right to use the car and also the police should target the real criminals like Raila Odinga who are using government vehicles and yet they have never been elected anywhere and instead he swore himself in which is a big offense,” he said.
