Laikipia clashes

It’s a few days since the residents of Laikipia let out a sigh of relief after stability was brought in the areas. Various security personnel were deployed and brought little moments of relief, little did they know that the bandits would strike again.

According to a report from the police, the bandits managed to beat a security dragnet and stole livestock at Ndunyu Village in Kirima location on Thursday morning but luckily, no one was injured. The National Police Service has issued a statement that a team of security team comprising of the KDF and the NPS are pursuing the bandits in an attempt to recover the livestock.

The police also assured the residents of Laikipia that it will do everything possible to bring the culprits to book and warned anyone trying to disrupt peace in the area that their days are numbered. A fortnight ago, Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso said that bandits who had invaded Laikipia Nature Conservancy had been chased away with their livestock.

Security operations have been running in Laikipia to bring calm after weeks of unrest. The rebuilding of homes razed down by the bandits are also underway. Interior Cabinet Seretary Fred Matiang’i spent two days in Ol-Moran to oversee distribution of foodstuffs and building materials and he expressed confidence in all the operations meant to bring calm in the area.

Four armed bandits on Monday September 20, 2021 raided Ewaso Police Patrol Base under Kimanjo Police Station within Laikipia North sub county in broad daylight and caught officers off guard.

Armed with AK47 rifles the bandits struck at a time when only one police officer was on duty manning the camp.

The base is adjacent to Ewaso Trading Center, which is partly at the border of Isiolo north sub county that falls under the jurisdiction of Oldonyiro Police Station.

Reports indicate that a police constable fell into the trap as the four accosted him in the report office.

The terrified officer could not reach out to call for cavalry as he was disarmed by the bandits.

“They ordered him to hand over his firearm which he had or they shoot him,” a police report filed at Kimanjo Police Station read.

The officer, after realising he had already been cornered, handed over his gun and bullets to the bandits in a move to save his life.

“The officer handed the G3 and two magazines with 40 rounds of ammunition,” the police report added.

As the four bandits were leaving the post, they broke into his house and took away his police uniform, two jungle trousers, one jungle shirt, one smoke jacket, and one green jungle hat.

Cautious not to leave a trace nor raise curiosity, the bandits never fired a single shot during the incident as they stealthy turned the house upside down in search of other valuable goods.

They, later on, crossed to the Oldonyiro side of the boundary towards the Ewaso River direction after boosting their armoury with police weapons seized during the raid at the patrol base.

A multiagency team that was alerted of the incident arrived a few hours later, regrouped and launched a manhunt for the bandits.

The GSU and regular police opted to use trained dogs to track the scent and direction of the bandits and also used a light aircraft from a neighbouring conservancy to conduct a search and track mission.

Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket has been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the ongoing clashes in Laikipia county.

According to reports, Kamket was placed behind bars on Wednesday September 8, 2021.

His arrest comes after eight people, including three police officers, lost their lives in a span of just six days from bandit attacks in the area.

Kamket was nabbed when the officers conducted a raid at his home in Tiaty, Baringo County.

He was taken to DCI offices in Nakuru where he is expected to be grilled over the ongoing skirmishes that have left hundreds of Kenyans displaced.

Rift Valley Regional Commander George Natembeya had declared war on all bandits and vowed to flush out their sponsors, some of whom are believed to be government agencies.

The legislator’s arrest comes just hours after detectives arrested former Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Mathew Lempurkel.

Lempurkel was picked up on Wednesday morning while at his home in Rongai, Kajiado County.
