Johnson Sakaja

Dramatic scenes unfolded in the capital Monday evening after police officers stormed City Hall in a failed attempt to arrest Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who is now reportedly on the run following a Senate-issued warrant for contempt of Parliament.

According to Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud, officers were acting on a lawful arrest order issued by a Senate watchdog committee after Sakaja allegedly snubbed multiple summons to answer audit queries.

Police arrived at City Hall late Monday but failed to apprehend the governor, who is believed to have narrowly escaped moments before their arrival, raising suspicions that he may have been tipped off about the impending operation.

“We will not relent. We are conducting a night operation to ensure he is arrested and presented before the Senate by tomorrow,” Mohamud said, signaling an escalation in efforts to track down the embattled county boss.

The arrest warrant stems from proceedings by a Senate oversight committee tasked with examining financial and administrative conduct within county governments. Lawmakers had summoned Sakaja to respond to audit concerns, but he reportedly failed to appear, prompting the committee to invoke its constitutional powers to compel attendance.

The Senate has increasingly taken a hardline stance against governors who ignore its summons, warning that failure to comply undermines parliamentary oversight and accountability in the management of public resources.

In a related development, police have also been directed to arrest Samburu Governor Jonathan Lati Lelelit, who similarly failed to honour Senate summons.

Mohamud confirmed that officers are actively pursuing both governors, suggesting that the crackdown could widen if more county chiefs are found in contempt of Parliament.

The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a strong public alert after a surge in fake and pseudo social media accounts posing as official police platforms.

According to the police, the trend is aimed at misleading, scamming, and misinforming Kenyans.

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the police warned that the impersonators are now running elaborate schemes designed to trick unsuspecting Kenyans into sharing personal information, sending money, or falling for fabricated alerts and announcements.

Don’t Follow, Don’t Reply, Don’t Trust

The police urged Kenyans to immediately stop interacting with any social media account claiming to be the NPS unless it is official and verified.

The only valid accounts are:

  • Facebook: @NationalPoliceKE
  • Twitter/X: @NPSOfficial_KE
  • TikTok: @NationalPoliceKE

“Any communication or solicitation from unverified accounts should be treated as suspicious,” the statement reads.

How Fake Police Accounts Are Targeting Kenyans

According to cybercrime experts, impersonation cases spike during major news cycles, public incidents, or nationwide security concerns. The creators of these fraudulent accounts exploit panic and confusion to spread:

  • Fake crime alerts
  • False recruitment advertisements
  • Phishing links
  • Scam mobile money requests
  • Politically charged misinformation

Some even mimic the NPS’s official branding to deceive followers.

Police: These Accounts Could Be Run by Criminals

The NPS believes that some of these accounts are operated by individuals or syndicates involved in fraud and disinformation campaigns.

“These accounts are designed to mislead, defraud, or misinform the public,” the Service warned, urging Kenyans to treat all such platforms with extreme caution.

How to Report Fake Accounts

Kenyans are encouraged to immediately report any suspicious accounts to both:

  • The social media platform, and
  • The National Police Service through its hotlines:
    • 999
    • 911
    • 112

Anonymous reports can also be made via:

  • #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203)
  • WhatsApp: 0709 570 000

A Growing Online Threat

The latest alert comes at a time when impersonation, deepfake videos, and fake “official” announcements have become widespread, with many Kenyans increasingly relying on social media for real-time updates.

Cybersecurity analysts warn that fake authority accounts pose a serious risk to:

  • National security
  • Public trust
  • Emergency response
  • Personal safety
  • Online financial security

The NPS is urging Kenyans to remain vigilant, verify before sharing, and always confirm information through verified channels.

As online impersonation grows more sophisticated, the NPS says public awareness will be one of the strongest tools in shutting down these fake accounts.

A 34-year-old man was stabbed to death in Kasarani, Nairobi, after attempting to intervene in a domestic dispute, police reported on Thursday.

The victim, Paul Maina, had visited a woman’s home on Wednesday evening, November 19, to repair faulty speakers. The woman, known to him, told officers that Maina was not romantically involved with her, contrary to claims later made by her partner.

According to a police report, Maina was leaving the house when the woman’s partner arrived. An argument broke out, during which the man allegedly attacked the woman.

Maina rushed back into the house to help separate the two, but the situation escalated. Police say the suspect allegedly drew a knife and stabbed Maina in the chest and stomach before fleeing the scene.

Maina was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

Manhunt Underway

Police say efforts to trace and arrest the suspect are ongoing. Officers revisited the crime scene on Thursday as part of the ongoing investigation. The woman involved has also recorded a statement with detectives.

Maina’s body was moved to a local mortuary for an autopsy and further procedures.

Authorities noted that incidents of fatal disputes linked to relationships, domestic arguments, property disagreements, and finances continue to rise. The homicide unit reportedly handles up to eight murder cases nationwide each day, with a number still unresolved.

Officer in Charge of Lamu Police Station (OCS) has been arrested following a tough order issued by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary over the weekend angrily pledged to zero down on drug traffickers.

The police boss has been arrested for facilitating the release of a suspected drug trafficker.

He was arrested alongside three other junior officers—all based at Faza Island.

According to the Inspector General of Police (IG), Hillary Mutyambai, the suspect who was allegedly found with Cannabis Sativa had been arrested late Sunday by a team of officers from the Border Patrol Unit.

The suspect was however released for unknown reasons.

“We want to know under which circumstances he was released because they claim he escaped. That explanation is very suspicious in itself. We are now looking for the suspect who escaped” Mutyambai stated according to Capital FM.

He further revealed that the two officers from the Border Patrol Unit who had effected the arrest had been summoned to write statements as officials contemplated undertaking an administrative action against the officers in custody.

On Sunday, Matiang’i, launched a special operation to flush out criminal activities in Mombasa.

The outspoken CS identified drug peddlers as the key reason behind the rise of the infamous killer gang, wakali kwanza, that has been enjoying a reign of terror at the coast.
