Covid-19: Distribution of Kenya’s New Cases by Counties

Kenya has recorded 72 new cases of Covid-19, raising the country’s total number to 2,093.

Speaking on Tuesday June 2 at Afya House, Nairobi during the daily Covid-19 updates, Health CAS Rashid Aman has said a total of 2892 samples had been tested in the last 24 hours.

Out of the 72 new cases, a total of 39 are from Nairobi, Busia has 13, Mombasa has 8, 4 are from Kajiado, 3 from Migori, 2 from Kiambu, 2 cases are in Garissa and one case is in Kisumu.

The youngest is 11 years and oldest is 73.

Another 17 patients have been discharged, raising the recoveries to 499.

On a sad note, another two people have died, raising the deaths to 71.

82,946 total number of samples have been tested so far.

6000 Bungoma Families Set to Benefit From Recently Launched Food Distribution Exercise

The county government of Bungoma has today (May 29) flagged off yet again another food distribution exercise targeting around 6000 vulnerable families.

The food donation exercise comes in as a relief following the global Covid-19 pandemic which has altered the normal operation of the people, to cater for their daily bread and so many vulnerable families languishing in poverty.

Speaking as he officially flagged off the exercise at the Red Cross offices, the deputy Governor Prof Ngome Kibanani noted that already, around 2000 households have benefitted from the food distribution exercise from the chamber of commerce together with the principals of the schools around Bungoma County.

He further said that as the county they are set to give out more food targeting to reach more than 16000 households in future.

‘Through the system of Red Cross together with Ward Administrators, we are going to identify 100 vulnerable families in every ward across the whole of Bungoma and we shall make sure the food reaches them,’ he said.

Covid-19 has interfered with a lot of activities both nationally and internationally, with economy being one of the most affected.

Professor Ngome therefore urged the residents of Bungoma and all Kenyans to abide by the government regulations and take personal responsibilities to work and revive the lost opportunities.

He said that soon, mass testing will kick off in Bungoma targeting the urban slums and borders including Malaba and Busia.

Bungoma Vulnerable Families to Receive Relief Foodstuffs

Close to 7,537 families in Bungoma South Sub-county are set to receive relief foodstuffs following the ongoing heavy rains across the country which have seen some of them homeless.

 200 houses have been totally demolished so far in Bungoma South Sub county and this comes in as a relief to many vulnerable families who have been affected.

Bungoma South Sub-county’s total population of the affected families include 43,755 people in number consisting of  9,003 the age of 5 years and below, female at the productive age of 12 years and above standing at 12,288 and those leaving with disabilities being 2,106.

The Sub County Deputy County Commissioner Michael Yator while addressing the press on May 28 2020 spoke on the county’s preparedness in curbing the Covid 19 pandemic, saying that so far 124 residents have been tested and 2 of them being positive but gladly one responded well to medication and now the county registers only one case.

The administrator stated that leaders within his Sub-County are working hand in hand with the Sub-County Covid-19 Response Rapid Committee team to ensure that residents stay safe and follow the government’s directives.

‘’We formed covid-19 response team within our Sub-County whereby we meet once per week to discuss on progress of our people,’’ he said.

He however, applauded the move by Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi who has greatly supported the fight against the spread of the Covid-19 by providing auto-mated sanitizing booths within Bungoma town populated areas.

‘’I appreciate our area MP Wafula Wamunyinyi for parting with us in food donations, face mask supply and hand wash sanitizers without forgetting major partners like Chamber of commerce Bungoma, Bungoma County government, the Rotary Club and the Kenya Red cross In ensuring that our people stay safe,’’ he said.

 He added that the Government is having a plan to employ youths from all the villages to help out with the cleaning of dirty areas within the Sub-County citing Mwikhupo, Namwacha, West Sang’alo, Kibabii, Sio and Oldrex as the most affected slums in Bungoma.

‘’This is a Government program at recruiting all unemployed youths to help in the cleaning of slum villages and planting of trees,’’ he said.

He further warned residents to stop ignoring the directives that have been put in place calling upon more so the Bodaboda operators to continue wearing masks and following the directives properly.

No One is Safe! Kagwe Warns as Kenya Records Triple Digit Rise in Covid-19 cases

Kenya has recorded 123 new Covid-19 positive cases, raising total number of confirmed cases in the country to 1471

This is after a total of 3,077 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. 85 of the new cases are in Nairobi and 24 from Mombasa.

In Nairobi, 33 Mathare residents were recorded as positive.

Three more people have died of Covid-19, raising the number to 55.

Speaking on Wednesday May 27, 2020 during the daily COVID-19 updates, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said that infection rate is now higher in informal settlements like Mathare (33) and Kibera (14).

He also warned Kenyans to be vigilant, citing that no one is currently safe since the cases are now coming from the community.

Kenya’s Covid-19 Cases Surge to 1348 as 62 More Test Positive

Kenya’s Covid-19 cases have surged to 1348.

Heath Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman on Tuesday May 26, 2020 announced 62 news Covid-19 cases after testing 2293 samples in the last 24 hours.

Out of the new 62 cases, Nairobi has 23 while Mombasa has 16. So far 64,264 people have been tested. Three patients have been discharged bringing total number of recoveries to 405.

Eight of the new cases came from Kwale, six are from Kajiado and Kiambu, and three in Kitui.

The number of deaths remain at 52.

Magufuli Orders Public Transport to Resume Normal Operations Without Any Adherence to Covid-19 Restrictions

Tanzania’s President John Pombe Magufuli has ordered public transport to resume normal operations without any adherence to Covid-19 restrictions.

This comes a day after he banned the use of face masks.

Magufuli through a press statement dated May 24 banned wearing of face masks on grounds that they create tension among Tanzania residents, with some closing down their businesses due to fear.

Magufuli allowed Public Service Vehicles to start carrying passengers to maximum as before. He has also ordered all schools to reopen.

He urged Tanzanians to thank God that they had defeated coronavirus pandemic, citing that they should only continue washing their hands since it is just a matter of good hygiene.

Magufuli has said the number of coronavirus patients in hospitals is declining, although the government has not released data on infection rates for many weeks.

The president has repeatedly downplayed the risk of the pandemic, causing alarm among neighbouring African countries and international organisations.

The government has even urged Tanzanians to dedicate three days for thanksgiving this weekend as they say they’re beating the virus.

The main issue is that there’s been no official data on the coronavirus for weeks, and there are concerns that the authorities are trying to downplay the extent of the outbreak.

Doctors and healthcare professionals are afraid to speak out about coronavirus because of a climate of fear.

Covid-19: Kibra Now a New Hot Spot as Kenya’s Tally Soars to 1161

Nairobi has been hit hard, having registered the highest number of new Covid-19 cases that were announced on Friday May 22, 2020.

Speaking in Machakos while giving the daily Covid-19 updates, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe confirmed 52 new cases of coronavirus.

Out of the 52 new cases, 23 cases have come from Nairobi, with Mombasa and Busia having seven each.

The cases were confirmed  from a sample size of 2,567 tested in the last 24 hours. This brings to 1161 total number of confirmed positive Covid-19 cases in the country.

However, Nairobi’s Kibra is now becoming a hot spot for the deadly virus.

Out of the 23 cases that came from Nairobi, eight are from Kibra. The densely populated area now has a total of 60 confirmed positive Covid-19 cases.

CS Kagwe said to keep the numbers low, Kenyans must adhere to measures as directed by the government. He expressed his fear in the rising number of cases in Kibra.

On Thursday May 21, the ministry through Dr Patrick Amoth also projected that the peak of infections in the country is expected to be around August and September, when Kenyans are expected to see at least 200 cases recorded in a day.

Kenya’s Covid-19 Peak Will Hit in August, September, 200 Cases to be Reported Daily

Health Director General Patrick Amoth  has said that they project that Kenya’s Covid-19 peak will hit in August, towards September.

During this period, the country is likely to record 200 cases and above on a daily basis.

Speaking on Thursday May 21 at Afya House during the Covid-19 daily briefing, Dr Amoth urged Kenyans to continue exercising social distancing and observing all the government directives.

“According to our current modelling, we project our peak will be around August-September where will be reporting about 200 cases per day,” Dr Amoth said.

The 200 cases that are set to be reported during the period will be only if Kenyans continue exercising the current measures that have been put by the government.

According to Dr Amoth, the measures that the government undertook at the time including closure of schools and cessation of movement in Nairobi and Mombasa  greatly reduced the spread of the virus.

Kenya’s Covid-19 cases have risen to 1,109, with 80 new cases recorded.

This is from a sample size of 3,102 tested in the last 24 hours. This is the largest sample size that has been tested.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Thursday said Kenya has increased its testing capacity by 40 per cent in the last two weeks. Of the new cases, 41 are from Nairobi, while 20 are from Mombasa.A total of 13 new cases are from Kibera.

CS Kagwe Explains How Daring Mourners Took 7 Covid-19 Cases to Siaya

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has narrated how mourners from Nairobi’s Kibra traveled all the way from Nairobi to Siaya.

Unfortunately, a coronavirus patient was among the mourners, leading to seven coronavirus infections in Siaya County.

According to CS Kagwe , the Kenyan citizen from Kibera left for the Siaya burial without the authority to travel.

“There are seven new cases in Siaya and the story is a sad one because the departure point of that case is Kibera,” Kagwe said on Thursday.

“…you are in Kibera and leave for a burial without the authority or travel document signed.”

Kagwe said the police officers thought the forged documents were genuine and gave way to the mourners to travel through roadblocks.

“.. the seven mourners are all positive and were identified by contact teams in Siaya. There is a reason why we lock down places…” he said.

Kagwe said that instead of going to the burial to bury one, they might suffer the same fate.

Covid-19: Kenya Confirms 80 New Cases, Nairobi Hit Hard

Kenya has confirmed 80 new cases of Covid-19.

This brings to 1109 total number of confirmed Covid-19 positive cases in the country. The cases were confirmed after a total of 3102 samples were tested.

Out of this new cases, 41 are from Nairobi, with Mombasa producing 20 cases.

A totalof 13 new cases are from Kibera.

Kenya has increased its testing capacity by 40 percent in the past few weeks.

Speaking on Thursday May 21 at Afya House during the daily Covid-19 briefings, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said that patients can indeed suffer infections more than once because the virus can reoccur between 30-50 days after the initial recovery, therefore people who have recovered are supposed to know this fact.

The numbers that the country has been reporting keep on increasing because the government has ramped up its testing capacity.

Kagwe on Wednesday May 20, 2020 announced the extension of cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh and Mombasa Old Town.

The cessation will now last until June 6, 2020.

“In order to contain further spread of the virus; there shall be an extension of the cessation of movement in Eastleigh & Old Town until 6th June 2020. Eateries & hawking prohibited until 6th June 2020,” CS Kagwe announced.

Kagwe said the extension was because the areas were still a challenge in regards to cases surging.

“Mombasa continues to be a challenge. 30 of the 66 cases reported today are from Mombasa,” Kagwe said.

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi Taken Into Quarantine

Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has been taken into quarantine.

This happened shortly after the burial of his brother Tony Waswa Wetang’ula, on Wednesday May 20, 2020.

Tony was laid to rest like a Covid-19 victim, with Bungoma Health Workers taking control of the body from the time it arrived at his rural home in Mukhweya village, Kabuchai Constituency in Bungoma County, to the time it was interred.

The Health workers fumigated the coffin, and immediately took it by the graveside after offloading it from the helicopter that was carrying it.

Tony was interred in a ceremony that lasted almost an hour, with five priests presiding over the ceremony.

Residents were forced to watch the event from a distance, since only about 60 people were allowed to attend, most of them being close relatives.

Until his death, Tony was Tim Wanyonyi’s personal aide. He is the one who took him to Aga Khan hospital, where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.

Reports indicated that Tony showed fever signs before being rushed to hospital.

A post shared on social media by blogger Robert Alai intimates that Tim Wanyonyi was taken to Quarantine in a chopper that had carried the body.

However, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has said that the government is yet to establish whether Tony, who is also Moses Wetangula’s brother died of Covid-19.

Addressing journalists during the daily Covid-19 briefings on Wednesday May 20, Kagwe said that he could not ascertain until contact tracing was done, highly suggesting that Waswa could have died of Covid-19.

“We cannot respond to that question until we have done the contact tracing [to establish whether Waswa’s contact persons were exposed to coronavirus or not], and indeed certified that what you are saying [that Tony Waswa died of coronavirus] is correct,” said CS Kagwe.

Kagwe Announces Tough Measures as Kenya’s Covid-19 Cases Hit 1029

Residents of Eastleigh in Nairobi and those in Mombasa Old Town will have to face a tough situation as Covid-19 pandemic continues to hit Kenya hard.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Wednesday May 20, 2020 announced the extension of cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh and Mombasa Old Town.

The cessation will now last until June 6, 2020.

“In order to contain further spread of the virus; there shall be an extension of the cessation of movement in Eastleigh & Old Town until 6th June 2020. Eateries & hawking prohibited until 6th June 2020,” CS Kagwe announced.

This is after CS Kagwe announced 66 more new cases of Covid-19 in the country.

Kagwe said the extension was because the areas were still a challenge in regards to cases surging.

“Mombasa continues to be a challenge. 30 of the 66 cases reported today are from Mombasa,” Kagwe said.

Kenya’s Covid-19 cases have risen to 1,029 with 66 new cases recorded.

This is the highest number since the first case recorded.

Kagwe said 64 of the new cases are Kenyans, while two are foreigners.

A total of 30 are from Mombasa, while 26 are from Nairobi. Three of the new cases are in Kajiado.

The government locked down Eastleigh and Old Town on May 6 2020 as coronavirus cases surged.

Monday Declared a Public Holiday

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, in a gazette notice dated May 20, 2020 has declared Monday May 25 a public holiday in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act.

This is to allow muslims mark Idd-ul-Fitr.

The Muslims across the world began observing the holy month of Ramadan on April 23.

The festival of Idd-ul-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-breaking, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Muslims believe that it was during the month of Ramadan that the text of the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Muslims celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr with prayers called “Salat Al Eid” in Arabic.

PHOTOS: Did Wetang’ula’s Brother Die of Covid-19? Questions Linger After His Burial

Bungoma senator Moses Wetang’ula and Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi’s brother Tony Waswa was on Wednesday 20, 2020 laid to rest in their rural home in Sirisia Constituency, Bungoma County.

The late was however, accorded a Covid-19-like burial.

Tony passed on while undergoing treatment at the Agha Khan Hospital in Nairobi last Friday. Villagers and other residents of Sirisia have been forced to crane their necks over fence to catch the burial ceremony.

At least five priests led the ceremony that lasted for less than an hour as the family observed coronavirus health guidelines, with officials from the Ministry of Health Handling the body from the moment it arrived by a helicopter, to the time of interment.

Away from the graveside where the men of God said prayers before his remains could be lowered, sat four staffs from the Health Ministry’s COVID-19 response team. The four donned overflowing white personal protective gears that only left faces uncovered.

Kenyans on social media are now questioning whether the late died of Covid-19, following the way he was buried.

Until his death, the late was an aide to Wanyonyi who has been an lawmaker at the National Assembly since 2013.

Kenya Registers Highest Number of Covid-19 Cases in a Single Day, Tally Soars to 887

Kenya has registered the highest number of Covid-19 positive cases in a single day.

The government in a statement issued on Sunday May 17, 2020 through government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna confirmed 57 new positive cases of coronavirus disease.

The cases were confirmed after a total of 2,198 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, raising total number of positive cases in the country to 887.

Of the 57, 34 were male while 23 were female.

“The youngest of the cases is a 2-year-old while the oldest is 61 years. Cumulatively, we have so far tested 43,712 samples,” the statement reads in part.

The distribution of the cases by counties is as follows: Mombasa (35), Nairobi (17), Kajiado (3), Kwale (1), and Kitui (1).

“We are happy to note that 12 patients have been discharged from hospital, bringing the total number of people who have so far recovered from Coronavirus to 313,” the press briefing signed by Oguna further reads.

Another 12 Tanzanian truck drivers tested positive at the border testing facilities over the last  24 hours, the latest report revealed.

11 of them were captured at the Lunga Lunga Border while 1 was identified at the Taveta Border, with the Ministry confirming that all 12 truckers were referred back to their home country.

Covid-19: Uhuru Announces Tougher Measures, Closes Boarders With Tanzania, Somalia

President Uhuru Kenyatta Saturday May 16, 2020 announced tougher measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The head of state in a press conference at State House, Nairobi announced closure of boarders with Tanzania and Somalia.

Only Cargo vehicles will be allowed in and out of the country through the closed boarders. President Kenyatta also announced cessation of movement of people in and out of Tanzania and Somalia.

This follows an increase in the number of Covid-19 positive cases from the samples tested at the boarders.

On May 13, Twenty-five truck drivers from Tanzania tested positive for Covid-19 at the Namanga border point.

President Kenyatta also extended the dusk to dawn curfew for another 21 days. The curfew will continue up to June 6, 2020.

The cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Mandera has also been extended up to June 6, 2020.

Kenya on Wednesday declared the border town with Tanzania as a high-risk area. Namanga is a town divided by the Tanzania-Kenya border. It is in Longido District, Tanzania and Kajiado County, Kenya. It is around 110 kilometers from Arusha, Tanzania.
