Mike Sonko

Just minutes after Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi rendered her resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nairobi County governor took to social media to celebrate her downfall.

Through his verified Facebook page, Sonko sent out coded messages which clearly implied that he was in celebrations.

The County chief posted three different video songs, in which artists are praising God for standing with them, and answering their prayers.

One of the videos had the message “God has listened to our prayers. There is a God in heaven who listens to our cries and answers them.”

The message in the other video also had a similar same message: “We have seen your mighty hand Lord. Your deeds are grateful from lower to higher. You have brought us from far. While holding our hand. You lift up your people and forever we praise you.”

He then posted Nadia Mukami’s ‘Maombi’ video song, which says “it is not witchcraft, but prayers.”

However, netizens who have reacted to his videos have warned him not to just celebrate yet, with some insinuating that Elachi’s resignation might be a well calculated move to dissolve Nairobi County.

Should it be dissolved, the city will be handed over to Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) under Director General Mohamed Badi.

Elachi while resigning on Tuesday morning said she was moving on to a new season in her political career and journey and going back to her Dagoretti North constituents.

She thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for giving her the opportunity to serve Nairobi for the last three years and said she hoped to serve in his administration in any other capacity in the near future.

She asked the assembly to stand firm and support Nairobi Metropolitan Services Director-General Mohammed Badi in transforming the capital.

Elachi advised Governor Sonko with whom she has had a frosty relationship with to focus on God and stop intimidation.

Just a day after Nairobi County governor Mike Sonko coming to the rescue of a police officer (now retired) who was caught up on a video being roughed up bu his wife over child upkeep, another senior DCI officer who participated in his dramatic arrest in Voi last year, has reached out to him for help.

Sonko had offered to pay for the Sh300,000 child support for the Voi base commander who mishandled him during his arrest, after a video of a jilted woman confronting the police officer, accusing him of absconding parental duties went viral.

The woman, who was breathing fire, mishandled her husband like a toddler as members of the public watched, and washed his dirty linen in public, revealing how he has failed to take care of their kid.

The woman cursed her husband and said that he is not man enough because he cannot look after his own flesh and blood.

In new developments, the governor has indicated that another Senior DCI officer who was present during his arrest has reached out to him and asked for help in clearing his medical expenses.

The official has been identified as Wundayi DCI Mr Richard Cheruiyot who is said to be in a critical condition after being shot by thugs thus needs financial help in removing the bullet lodged in his kidney.

In a long Facebook post, Sonko urged Kenyans not to repay evil for evil.

He revealed that he had accepted to meet the medical expenses of the senior DCI officer, noting that he was ready to meet the expenses of the third officer who has developed kidney complications.

Below is his Facebook post.

“DO NOT REPAY ANYONE EVIL FOR EVIL.

“Romans 12:17 says: ” Do not repay anyone evil for evil or insult with insult. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.”

“In my yesterday’s Facebook post on the former Voi Base Commander who handcuffed me with two handcuffs and forcefully borded me in a police chopper during my arrest, I offered to clear the 300,000/= upkeep cost for his child.

“Today, the DCI Wundanyi a Mr. RICHARD CHERUIYOT, who was also instructed by the OCPD Voi to ensure that he handcuffs me with two handcuffs, called my Director of Communication seeking for my medical assistance in removing a bullet that is lodged around his kidney area after he was shot by thugs.I wish to confirm that I have accepted to meet the medical expenses of this senior DCI officer.

“I’m ready to meet the expenses of the third officer who has developed kidney complications. I’m not trying to mock the officers who arrested me or protest against my arrest as im not above the law but the manner in which I was forcefully bundled in a police chopper with two handcuffs from Voi airstrip to Wilson airport was not proper.

“It is against International aviation laws and regulations.

“However, I wish to confirm to the general public that I do not have any complain against all the officers involved during my arrest but I’m appealing to all our men and women in uniform who are doing a good job in protecting Kenyans and ensuring law and order is maintained to be handling unarmed suspects in a humane way during arrest as every suspect is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. May the Lord continue to bless you all.

A video of a jilted woman confronting her husband who is a retired police officer, accusing him of absconding parental duties remained the talk of the internet for the better part of Tuesday 16, 2020.

The woman, who was breathing fire, mishandled her husband like a toddler as members of the public watched, and washed his dirty linen in public, revealing how he has failed to take care of their kid.

The woman cursed her husband and said that he is not man enough because he cannot look after his own flesh and blood.

He desperately tried to cool her down but the woman continued causing more drama in the busy street. But did you know that the man in the video is the police officer who mishandled governor Mike Sonko during his dramatic arrest in Voi last year?

Well, governor Sonko on Wednesday morning took to his social media handles revealing that the man in the video is the same man who assaulted him at the time of his arrest.

Sonko intimated that he has forgiven the commander for the assault levelled on him during his arrest and offered to pay the child support arrears.

“The Voi Base Commander who handcuffed me becomes a dead beat dad. I do not support domestic violence. I condemn the use of violence in any relationship but pole sana my friend Mr. Mureithi the recently retired Voi Base commander who forcefully handcuffed me with two pairs of handcuffs just to board a police chopper during my arrest at Voi,” reads the post in part.

Further, he added, “My humble advice to you, if the baby the woman is alleging is really yours kindly accept the responsibility its just normal part of life and since you are now retired, I’m willing to pay for you the 300,000/= upkeep the woman has been awarded by the children’s court.”

The governor also indicated that Mureithi’s colleague who aided in his dramatic arrest is also suffering from a kidney problem and pledged to cater for his medical expenses.

“I have also been made to understand that one of your colleagues who also manhandled me has a kidney problem I’m as well willing to help in meeting his medical expenses,” wrote Sonko.

Governor Sonko was arrested in December 2019 over alleged misappropriation of Ksh357 million from county coffers.

A section of Kenyans on Twitter have reminded Nairobi governor Mike Sonko of his past, shortly after he threatened to take interior Permanent Secretary Karanja Kibicho to International Criminal Court (ICC).

Sonko through his social media handles Wednesday morning said that he was studying the Rome statues and engaging local and international lawyers to deal with those involved in the demolition of residential houses in Korogocho, Kariobangi North in Nairobi.

Sonko argues that such incidents have been happening under the instructions of PS Kibicho, Nairobi Regional Commissioner (RC) Wilson Njega and Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo .

Sonko says that the trio must be taken to ICC for breaching articles 1.5, 53 and 7(1)(k) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. He wants them charged with a serious crime against humanity.

However, a section of KOT have reminded Sonko of some of his past, which they now believe is haunting the embattled County chief.

Some reminded Sonko of the time he used to record phone calls between him and prominent people, arguing that should he not have done so, he would not not be facing all the problems that he is currently facing.

Some reminded him of the time he was demonstrating at the Hague, outside the ICC demanding respect for President Uhuru Kenyatta, at the time the head of state and his deputy William Ruto were facing a case at the court.

The embattled Nairobi boss has also been reminded of the time he poured raw sewage at the Jacaranda grounds in Donhom, just to prevent the then NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga from addressing a rally.

Here are some of the reactions.

Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has claimed that there was military coup in Nairobi county disguised as transfer of key functions to the National government.

His comment came when the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator was responding to lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi’s claim that the government was soiling the good image of military people by appointing them as procurement managers at City Hall.

Murkomen in his response questioned how anyone can be convinced that there was no military coup in Nairobi county disguised as transfer of functions.

Murkomen’s claim comes just a day after he criticized the approval of seven military officers to Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS).

During the Senate proceeding on Tuesday May 5, Murkomen said that the move has deprived Nairobians of their democracy.

According to Murkomen, the decision to send active military men to NMS was an ill move when such people should be in barracks and manning our border points.

Murkomen said he was against the takeover of the county from Governor Mike Sonko, which he said is against the Constitution.

The senator has also raised concern over accountability in NMS, saying it will be a ‘mirage’.

The top Kenya Defence Forces body (Kenya Defence Council) approved military officers joining NMS which was created in March following an agreement between Sonko and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kariobangi residents Monday morning woke up to find their homes being brought down without any prior notice.

At least 5,000 families are now homeless following demolitions that took place in Korogocho slums, Kariobangi North, Nairobi.

The demolitions were done after they were given 24 hours to vacate the land the government says was grabbed from Dandora Estate Waste Sewerage Treatment Plant in Ruai.

The victims say that the area DC and OCPD only gave them a verbal notice on Sunday to move out by the end of the day.

The incident has angered Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, who on Wednesday morning, took to his social media accounts to express his disappointment in people he believes are behind the unfortunate incident.

The embattled County boss, in a long Facebook post accused Interior Permanent Secretary Karanja Kibicho of being behind the scheme. He calimed that it is Kibicho who had even ignored a High Court order, and went ahead to vandalise Covid-19 sanitisation booths that he had installed in Nairobi.

Sonko further threatened to take those involved, to International Criminal Court, to be charged with serious crimes against humanity.

However, in his protest post, Sonko defended President Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing that the head of state is not aware of the incident.

He accused those around President Kenyatta of being behind various schemes to destroy the country.

“I’m 100% sure the President is not aware about this but I have been saying the people around my Boss are messing this country,” Sonko said in part of his post.

However, Sonko’s defence against the head of state seems to have gone wrong. A section of Kenyans on twitter have blasted the troubled governor, saying that he has always been protecting President Kenyatta.

According to KOT, it is President Kenyatta who has been giving orders for the incidents Sonko is protesting against. They further argue that it is the head of state who want Sonko out, thus the currently being witnessed militariustion of Nairobi county.

Some have blasted Sonko for calling President Kenyatta his boss, arguing that Nairobi people who voted him in, are his right bosses.

Take a look at some of the reactions.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has threatened to take Interior Permanent Secretary Karanja Kibicho to an International Criminal Court (ICC), at the Hague.

Sonko in a protest letter posted on his social media handles Wednesday morning said that he was studying the Rome statues and engaging local and international lawyers to deal with the case in which thousands on Nairobi residents residing in Korogocho, Kariobangi area, were left homeless after their houses were vandalised without proper notice.

The embattled County chief argues that such incidents have been happening under the instructions of PS Kibicho, Nairobi Regional Commissioner (RC) Wilson Njega and Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo .

Sonko says that the trio must be taken to ICC for breaching articles 1.5, 53 and 7(1)(k) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

He wants them charged with a serious crime against humanity.

In his arguement, Sonko has defended President Uhuru Kenyatta, citing that he is 100% sure the head of state is not aware of the incidents.

He argues that it is people around the first in command that are messing with he country.

He notes that PS Kibicho defied a high court order just the same way he defied an order Sonko had secured against the vandalism of the public sanitization booths, and send heavily armed police officers to supervise an illegal eviction and demolition during the deadly Covid-19 pandemic period.

Sonko adds that it is a curse for the elderly, Children and their Mothers to sleep in the rains just because the only place they have been calling home has been vandalised, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’m 100% sure the President is not aware about this but I have been saying the people around my Boss are messing this country. How on earth do you defy a high court order just the same way they defied an order we secured against the vandalism of the public sanitization booths and send heavily armed police officers to supervise an illegal eviction and demolition during this deadly Covid-19 pandemic period.

” The elderly, Children and their Mothers are sleeping in the rains, what a curse? Let me study the Rome statues and engage the local and international lawyers to deal with this issue, coz this is a serious crime against humanity and this is the right time PS Interior Karanja Kibicho, Nairobi RC Wilson Njega and Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo MUST be taken to ICC for breaching articles 1.5, 53 and 7(1)(k) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court,” reads part of Sonko’s statement on Facebook.

Tanga Tanga senator has tore into Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after the commission said Polycarp Igathe is still Nairobi’s Deputy Governor.

The electoral agency on Thursday said it is not aware the the former governor Mike Sonko’s deputy resigned from the county job.

According to IEBC, Igathe’s resignation letter never reached them.

Igathe was elected to the position of Deputy Governor Nairobi City County in the 2017 general elections on the Jubilee political party ticket, as Mike Sonko’s running mate.

He resigned abruptly on 12 January 2018, citing lack of trust from his boss.

Kericho senator Aaron Cheruiyot has tore into the Wafula Chebukati led commission for saying that Igathe never resigned.

The Same @IEBCKenya that recently cleared a nominee to be vetted by Nairobi CA for Dep Gov now says that as per their records Igathe is still DG .Anybody still denying that Bangi na Uchawi imetulemea huku Kenya ?” the lawmaker posted on twitter.

“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1pm on 31st Jan 2018.

“I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county. Without fear, favour or ill will I step down to avoid abusing or betraying my oath of office to Kenyans, Nairobians and my family. Thank you for the encouraging support given to me so far,” he said in a post on his Twitter account.

The statement by IEBC that Igathe never resigned has caused an uproar, with some politicians question the integrity of the commission.

Last month, the electoral commission cleared Anne Kananu Mwenda to be vetted by Nairobi County Assembly for the DG job.

This has made several Kenyans to question the integrity of the electoral agency, with some speculating that there must be something cooking.

Some argue that there is a plot to get Igathe back to City hall to take over as city boss.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s move to save embattled governor Mike Sonko from impeachment seems not to have bore any fruits after the MCAs vowed to oust the county chief hours after meeting the head of state at State House.

Minority whip in the County Assembly, the Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok, who is behind the impeachment said he will still table the motion.

Imwatok says Sonko has failed in his duties as Nairobi governor.

The ODM MCA said the motion will not be impeded by President Kenyatta’s meeting with Nairobi MCAs on Saturday.

“It is a private motion and it has not been affected by the meeting. I will still bring it on Tuesday,” said Imwatok who snubbed the meeting since he was in Kisumu for a burial .

He and other MCAs, including Minority Leader David Mberia, who was attending the BBI forum in Meru, lamented that they had received late communication from State House and thus could not honour the meeting.

The meeting which was held at statehouse was greatly attended by Jubilee MCAs who thereafter vowed to turn the motive to oust Governor Sonko down.

Jubilee members in the County Assembly stated they will vote down the motion.

“Our party leader has told us not to proceed with the impeachment motion. It is as good as dead now,” Peter Warutere, Roysambu MCAs.

The impeachment is based on different counts, including the governor’s alleged gross violation of the Constitution, incompetency and inability to lead, holding the county at ransom with lack of deputy governor, unable to control county debts and clearing of pending bills among others.

The deal between President Uhuru Kenyatta and governor Mike Sonko to handover Nairobi City County to National Government was characterized by tough demands and an ambush on the part of the Nairobi County Government, details have revealed.

When Sonko left his home to come to the city, he was only prepared to meet Nairobi MCAs at his Upper Hill office and had no idea the day would end with his powers significantly neutered.

At around 11am, President Uhuru through State House Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua summoned Sonko to the house on the hill – giving him only 15 minutes to show up.

So unprepared was Sonko that he is reported to have won his suit and tie on the way to State House.

State House had also summoned acting County Secretary Justus Kathenge who was equally given a strict deadline.

At State House, Sonko and Kathenge found President Uhuru, Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa, and Leboo Morintat whom the Nairobi Governor had fired a day earlier from the position of County Secretary.

It was at the meeting that Sonko was informed that the only way to keep Nairobi County running was to hand over functions.

It is reported that Uhuru was keen to avoid a by-election in Nairobi which was likely to happen if Sonko was impeached in the process that had already kicked.

A by-election in Nairobi would drain the already struggling National Treasury.

Deputy President William Ruto has revealed more details surrounding the takeover of Nairobi City County by the National Government.

The DP has spoken on the unexpected move by Governor Mike Sonko to hand over the County functions to President Uhuru Kenyatta led government.

DP Ruto disclosed that President Kenyatta met with the Council of Governors and IEBC Commissioners before the move was actualized.

The management of Nairobi city county has been a major source of concern for GoK and Nairobians,” Dr Ruto stated.

HE the President met with CoG & IBEC chairs in consultation with other actors to facilitate the agreements signed,” he added.

The Deputy President also urged all stakeholders to “support this effort to ensure our city functions“.

Sonko’s move to surrender key county functions to the national government was considered the least disruptive of the options available to address the leadership crisis at City Hall.

Sonko has hence defended his decision to hand over some county functions to the national government.

In a statement posted in the wee hours of Thursday morning, Sonko — who is facing corruption charges in court — said the needs of Nairobi County are unique compared to other devolved units.

“My government set out on a fact-finding mission that saw us benchmark and take lessons from other jurisdictions across the world including Washington DC in the US and Abuja in Nigeria. From these case studies, we established that cities and metropolis the size of Nairobi are best served jointly by devolved units and central governments,” he said.

Embattled Nairobi County governor Mike Sonko has broken his silence hours after handing over the administration of Nairobi County to the national government.

Sharing a video of himself pleading with President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene in the murky Nairobi county administration situation,  Sonko dispelled rumors that the role was forcefully taken away from him, owing to his inability to effectively execute his duties as a county head, after he was blocked from office by the court.

In the video, Sonko pours out his heart to the head of state, saying that cartels rooted deep within Nairobi had been interfering with his service delivery.

He further asks the president to assist him to weed out corrupt untouchables in the county, offering to give up roles such as revenue management and county planning to the national government.

Tunaomba uingilie hiyo kazi mheshimiwa rais. Vile ulifanya KRA ukapeleka wafisadi nyumbani, naomba msaada wako Nairobi mheshimiwa rais (we request that just as you did at KRA and sent corrupt officials packing, you also need to assist me in Nairobi),” Sonko said, during the launch of the Nairobi Expressway in Oct. 2019.

‘Kama ni revenue chukua huko national government, kama ni planning mheshimiwa rais ichukue pia iende huko national government (Please take up the revenue and planning functions as the national government)” he added.

In his social media post on Tuesday, just hours after State House announced the surprise move, the governor promised the Nairobi electorate service delivery, putting aside political and court slideshows aside.

”TBT video. Service delivery to the great people of Nairobi kwanza Siasa na kesi baadae (service delivery first then politics and other cases will follow),” the politician wrote.

Among the roles taken away from Sonko’s government, following Tuesday’s deal with the national government, are county health services, county transport services, county public works, utilities and ancillary services, and county planning and development.

It is still unclear what mandate the governor will execute going forward.

Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen will tomorrow (Wednesday) in the senate challenge the transfer of Nairobi County government’s key functions to national government.

The Elgeyo Marakwet senator says the matter is such a weighty that requires deep deflection.

Murkomen will make a comprehensive statement in the Senate tomorrow and according to him, the matter will occupy most of the senators’ debating time.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was on Wednesday morning ejected from Mzee Daniel Moi’s funeral at Kabarak.

Sonko was ejected from the main dais shortly after arriving.

The embattled governor tried to access the main dais where other dignitaries were sitting.

Sonko had to suffer the humiliation after he was ejected from the VIP dais at the burial ceremony of retired President Daniel arap Moi, at Kabarak University grounds in Nakuru County.

The final journey for the late former head of state is fully under the control of the military.

Sonko in this case, had breached the protocol.

However, in the videos doing rounds on social media, Sonko looks undisturbed.

The body left Wilson Airport, Nairobi at around 7.40am and headed to Kabarak airstrip for his final journey.

Tens of people started streaming into Kabarak University compound at Moi’s Kabarak home as early as 3am where the burial service will take place, with the first 30,000 getting free snacks, a bottle of soda and a loaf of bread.

Heavy commercial vehicles have been kept off the Nairobi-Eldoret Highway.Police officers were lined up along the highway from Nairobi to Kabarak to enable easy movement of vehicles.

Police said the heavy commercial vehicles will be allowed back on the road at 7pm Wednesday.

The former president died on February 4 in Nairobi aged 95, with the family arguing that he was aged 105 instead.

Nairobi county governor Mike Sonko who is running his operations outside his office has yet again made a quick reshuffle to his cabinet.

In the reshuffle, Sonko has reinstated Charles Kerich to his cabinet after firing him last month.

Mohamed Dagane who was also sent packing at the time was also drafted back.

Kerich and Dagane will play the role of CECs for Lands docket and Road docket respectively.

While restoring the two, the embattled Sonko also reshuffled his cabinet with the immediate former Lands CEC Pauline Kahiga and ex- Agriculture department head, Winfrend Gathangu, sent home.

Others officials given new dockets include Vesca Kangogo from Health and Environment to Devolution and Hitan Majevda will now head the Health department.

Reports have it that Kerich’s reinstatement was due to being innocent in the Precious Talents Academy tragedy.

Kerich and Dagane met their unfortunate fate after they were kicked out of office following the calamity that took the lives of 8 pupils in 2019.

The owner of the school, Moses Wainaina, explained that the county administration dug a sewer line behind the classrooms that would have caused the accident.

Following concerns raised by the public over the matter, the controversial leader took action after promising to get to the bottom of the matter.

Sonko on his part, claimed that rogue officials behind the catastrophe would be held responsible and justice sought for the families of the victims.
