13 Arrested in Crackdown on Suspected Criminal Gang in Trans Nzoia

A multi-agency security team has arrested 13 suspects during an operation targeting alleged criminal gang activities in Trans Nzoia County.

According to the National Police Service, the intelligence-led operation was conducted in the Gitwamba area as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks accused of terrorising residents through violence, intimidation, theft, vandalism, and other unlawful activities.

Police said the coordinated swoop was carried out on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and resulted in the arrest of individuals believed to be linked to gang-related offences within the area.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the identities of the suspects but confirmed that investigations are ongoing ahead of their arraignment in court.

The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to restoring law and order in areas affected by criminal gangs and organised crime.

In a statement, police said such groups continue to undermine public confidence and disrupt normal livelihoods through unlawful activities.

“The National Police Service remains committed to dismantling criminal gangs that threaten peace, undermine public confidence, and disrupt normal livelihoods,” the statement read in part.

Security agencies said they will continue intensifying intelligence-led operations to track down individuals involved in criminal activities across the country.

Police further warned that suspects linked to violence, extortion, theft, and related offences would be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Appeal to the public

The National Police Service Kenya also called on members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and sharing information that may help combat crime.

Residents were urged to use emergency numbers 999 and 911, or anonymously report information through the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline and WhatsApp channels.

The latest operation comes amid increased efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb rising criminal activities in several parts of the country through coordinated crackdowns and surveillance operations.

Authorities say public cooperation remains critical in helping security teams maintain peace and enhance safety within communities.

Former Health CS Susan Nakhumicha

Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has formally declared her intention to run for Trans Nzoia Governor in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for a high-stakes political contest against incumbent Governor George Natembeya.

Speaking on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at a gathering in Cherengany, Nakhumicha said her family and supporters had given her a new political direction—one that moves her beyond the Woman Representative seat she previously held.

“Nachukua nafasi hii kushukuru sana hiyo mwelekeo mpya ambao mmenipa, yakwamba kuanzia leo nikitembea nitembee na nguvu mpya ya kusema mimi sio tu wa Cherengany ward, mimi sasa naenda kuwa kiongozi katika Trans Nzoia County,” she said.

In a fiery speech, Nakhumicha made it clear she would not seek the Woman Representative position again.

“Katiba ya Kenya inaruhusu mkenya yeyote, wa jinsia yoyote, kuwa katika nafasi ya uongozi. Kwa hivo leo wameniondoa kwenye kiti cha wamama… nataka kuwahakikishia yakwamba mimi ikifika 2027 sitatafuta kiti cha wamama,” she declared.

Takes Aim at Natembeya

Nakhumicha’s announcement signals her direct challenge to Governor Natembeya, who is expected to seek a second term. Her entry is projected to dramatically shake up Trans Nzoia politics, especially given her national profile and previous high-ranking role in the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Ikifika 2027, familia imenipa mwelekeo mpya na huo ndio nitafuata,” she added, strongly hinting that she intends to reclaim political ground after being dropped from Cabinet in a reshuffle earlier this year.

Chris Wamalwa Also Enters the Race

Nakhumicha is not the only heavyweight angling for the governorship. Former Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa also declared his bid on the same day, marking the first time both well-known politicians have openly confirmed their intention to face Natembeya at the ballot.

Wamalwa, a seasoned politician with deep grassroots networks, is expected to split votes in what is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races ahead of 2027.

Trans Nzoia County Governor hopeful George Natembeya has unveiled his choice for deputy ahead of the Monday May 16, 2022 deadline set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner on Friday unveiled Mrs. Philemona Bineah Kapkor as his choice for deputy governor at an event held at Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) headquarters located at Chui House, Nairobi.

Philomena is a banker and Natembeya believes her experience and expertise will help the Tans Nzoia County grow should he clinch the county’s topmost seat.

Natembeya’s main opponent is Kiminini Member of Parliament Chris Wamalwa who is vying on a Ford Kenya ticket.

Migori gubernatorial candidate John Pesa unveiled veteran journalist Matiko Bohoko as his running mate.

Kisii gubernatorial candidate Sam Ongeri unveiled Engineer Josiah Maaga as his ticket-mate.

Busia gubernatorial hopeful Moses settled on Tom Ipomai as his running mate.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who is the DAP-K party patron used the event’s opportunity to tell ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetangula that the power-sharing deal they signed with DP William Ruto is a scam.

Both Mudavadi and Wetangula have been promised 30 per cent of the government should Ruto win the August 9 presidential election.

However, the promise comes with a rider that the two politicians must deliver at least 70 per cent of the Western Kenya votes. That is around 1.8 million votes.

Should they succeed in that quest, and Ruto wins the presidency, then Mudavadi will be appointed the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Wetangula the Speaker of the National Assembly.
