Githunguri MP Gabriel Kago’s sister Jane Murugi is dead.

Murugi, a senior nurse stationed in Machakos County, was found dead in her Membley Estate house in Ruiru, Kiambu County on Friday morning.

The body was reportedly discovered in the toilet.

Initial reports suggested that Murugi, 41, committed suicide by hanging.

Police, however, suspect foul play, given Murugi was found dead while seated on the toilet bowl.

“A scarf tied to a necktie was found hanging from the toilet window,” Ruiru OCPD Mutwiri Ringera said.

Her husband, Dr Stephen Ndoro, said he woke up at 5am on Friday and did not find his wife in bed.

Ndoro, 38, a medical doctor who works in Makueni County, said when he went to the toilet, he found his wife dead.

Murugi, who was on maternity leave, died aged 41. She leaves behind a 2-month old baby.

Her body was taken to Kenyatta University Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Kiambu County DCI boss, OCPD Ringera, MP Kago, and other lawmakers had arrived at the morgue by 1pm Friday.

Police say they will question Murugi’s husband.

Just a day after Deputy President Dr William Ruto cursing out Nation Media Group over a controversial headline that ran on Thursday, his lawyer in the case case involving Weston Hotel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has slammed Standard Newspaper over another headline.

The Standard on Friday morning ran a headline titled “Bank Fights to Get Back one billion from Ruto hotel”, which Ahmednasir has termed as fraudulent.

While referring to the Mombasa road-based media house as a gutter press, the Grand Muller said false reporting is the paper’s stock in trade.

This is not the first time the DP has been at a tussle with media houses over headlines.

Early last month, Ruto lashed out at The Standard newspaper over what he termed as ‘desperate gutter journalism lies of drama.’

The DP’s remarks were in reaction to an article published by the newspaper which reported an alleged airport drama involving one of the DP’s men when President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in the country from Japan on Thursday.

In august, Ruto again had put the Standard newspaper on the spot over a story they had published.

The DP referred to the publication’s article titled, ‘BBI A Waste of Taxpayers Money’, as misleading and alarming.

He, therefore, took to his Twitter account, where he expressed his displeasure with the said newspaper.

A renowned Swedish diver has said that he can use 15 mins only to locate the car and two bodies submerged in the Likoni Channel following the Sunday evening ferry tragedy.

The diver says that after locating the car, he can take two hours to retrieve them, all for free provided that he brings his own boat.

He says that he has assessed the situation at the Likoni channel and that he will bring his own machine and collaborate with Kenya Navy divers to retrieve the bodies.

He says he can took to work tomorrow(Friday) morning if he is allowed to go on with the operation.

Hopes of retrieving bodies of Mariam Kigenda and her 4-year-old daughter, Amanda Mutheu, who were aboard a vehicle that plunged into the sea on Sunday, were further thwarted on Wednesday after search operations failed to bear fruit for the fourth day in a row.

This as the government dispatched Transport Principal Secretary Esther Koimett to coordinate the recovery operation which has turned out to be some sort of a “trial and error mission”.

Engineers from Chinese firm handling the Kipevu Oil Terminal project brought in their underwater cameras and scanned through a dark sandy underwater with absolutely poor visibility.

The images captured underwater painted a picture of “trial and error” even though the government agencies insisted they were optimistic about recovery.

On Monday, the government barred a private diver that had been hired by the victims’ family to retrieve bodies, saying that he was feeding the family with wrong information. Will the swedish diver be allowed to do the operation?

Up to now, the bodies and the car have not been retrieved. The operation is still going on.

A 29-year-old man from Shinyalu in Kakamega County has been arrested on suspicion of killing his 26-year-old wife.

Eliakim Namusende allegedly killed his wife on Wednesday on claims that she cheated on him with several men in the Khayega Market neighbourhood.

According to neighbors, Namusende and his partner relocated to the neighbourhood two weeks ago.

They say Namusende was kicked out of his former rented house in a nearby estate after he soaked his wife in petrol in preparation of setting her alight. His attempt to kill his wife was, however, thwarted at the time, alleged Osungu.

Shinyalu lead DCI officer, Elijah Macharia, told a local daily that Eliakim fatally stabbed his wife multiple times in the neck.

“Police officers found the man in his house cleaning a wound that he sustained during the Wednesday night incident,” said Macharia.

The suspect will be arraigned once investigations are concluded, said the Shinyalu DCI boss.

The deceased was taken to a Kakamega hospital morgue.

The firm that manufactures Sure lubricated condoms has announced a product recall citing quality issues.

The decision to recall the Sure condoms was announced by Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) which distributes the product in the country.

Kemsa appealed to stakeholders to cooperate with Lifeline Laboratories to ensure the defective batches are taken off the shelves.

“Lifeline Laboratories is recalling the above-mention product, Sure lubricated condoms dotted, due to quality issues,” Kemsa’s Qualtity Assurance Manager, Dr John Aduda, said the letter dated September 12, 2019.

Kemsa said the Sure condoms slated for recall are set to expire on December 2021 and December 2022 and have batch numbers 17DN754 and 17DN052.

A spokesperson of Lifeline Laboratories said that they were only contracted by the Thailand based manufacturer, Innolatex Limited to do the recall.

They also advised consumers to check the brand and the date at the bottom of the outer packing and the foil wrapping to see if they are in possession of these potentially defective condoms.

Customers whose condoms match the affected batch numbers are advised to immediately stop using them.

When it comes to honoring promises, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has never disappointed! But what happened to the promise given to the victims of Precious talents academy tragedy?

Well, this is why the county boss is threatening to fire members of his staff. It is alleged that the compensation that was to be made was never fulfilled.

A mourner claimed that the Sh100,000 each sent out by the county to the bereaved parents at Precious Talent Academy was never received.

Through a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday evening, Sonko threatened to take action on the culprits, if the money meant for the families was not delivered to them.

“I swear by the name of the almighty God if this speaker in the attached video is talking the truth and not politics played by the area MP then I can see more staff going home,” Sonko said.

In the video, the mourner disclosed that the bereaved families did not receive any money.

“Nairobi county government promised to give us money when we were at the memorial. ODM leader Raila Odinga also stated that he would give his donation and President Uhuru Kenyatta’s one too. Sadly, we have not received the donations,” the mourner said.

“This family has not been supported at all. People were alleging that the government stood for this funeral when we had our own Harambee. We ourselves contributed to raising money to hire the buses.”

But Sonko said his Education CEC, chief officer finance and chief officer Disaster Management confirmed that each family that lost a kid received the money for funeral expenses.

“Besides that the county provided eight coffins and transport to each family. Watasema hiyo pesa walitransfer kwanani [They will say where they transferred the money to], ” he said.

“I don’t play with emotions especially with families that are mourning. I mean what I say and I will do a thorough follow up kesho.”

Eight pupils lost their lives when a classroom collapsed at Precious Talent Academy in Dagoreti last month.

The school is reported to have a population of about 800 pupils.

According to the locals, the entire Ngando Ward does not have a primary public school, apart from Lenana High School which is said to be sitting on more than 200 hectares of land.

Senators now want Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia to take political responsibility after a mother and her daughter drowned after their car slid off a Likoni ferry on Sunday.

The lawmakers demanded CS Macharia and his Principal Secretaries Esther Koimett (Transport) and Nancy Karigithu (Maritime and Shipping Affairs) to vacate office over the incident.

On Sunday,35-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, 4, a student at MM Shah Academy, drowned, when their vehicle slid off MV Harambee ferry rolled plunging into the sea midstream at the busy Likoni channel in Mombasa.

The House adjourned on Wednesday to discuss the incident.

Meanwhile, CS Macharia appointed his PS Koimet to lead a multi-agency team to retrieve bodies and the vehicle.

Led by Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri and his Makueni counterpart Mutula Kilonzo Jr., the legislators accused the government of poor disaster preparedness.

“You can imagine 72 hours later, we have not had a statement from the CS on this incident. What we have only seen is him a pointing a person who is not even an expert to lead the rescue operations,” Senator Mutula Jr., said.

“They should all take responsibility and resign from their positions,” he added.

On his part, Senator Ongeri fingered the Kenya Navy, the Coast Guard Service, Kenya Ports Authority, Maritime Authority and the Kenya Ferry Services of neglect and letting down Kenyans.

He accused the agencies of being “spectators and onlookers watching as somebody disappeared into the waters.”

Senator Godhana Hargura (Marsabit) and nominated counterparts Agnes Zani, Naomi Shiyonga and Petronilla Were also accused the government of putting at risk thousands of residents who use the ferry services.

Deputy President Dr William Ruto has been in a tussle with Media houses not less than once over controversial headlines.

Just recently, the DP has been been seen blasting the Standard Media Group on several occasions over controversial headlines that run with his name, and now, he has turned his anger to the Nation Media Group.

On Thursday morning, Daily Nation newspaper ran a headline titled “Murumbi Land Ownership Row Haunts Ruto”.

Responding to the headline, the seemingly angry Ruto said that the news was fake and sponsored.

Accusing the media house of being bankrupt, Ruto said that it has become hard for them to make a sale without his name on the headline.

“The now persistent, obviously sponsored FAKE NEWS by hired bankrupt media that finds it difficult to make a sale without the name Ruto. Bure kabisa. Riswa! ” Ruto tweeted.

Two months ago, Ruto put The Star Newspaper on the spot over a story on their cover page.

Ruto referred to The Star’s cover story that was titled ‘Ruto Allies Plot to Scuttle Uhuru-Raila Referendum’, as fake news.

According to the Deputy President, it was uncouth of newspapers, to use his name to sell stories even when he was not involved in the said news.

The DP has also been at odds with Standard Newspaper several over controversial headlines.

Koimett, who addressed media on Wednesday evening, said there were no positive results for the search mission in five out of 14 spots which were earlier suspected to be possible locations where the bodies and vehicle wreckage could be found.

She assured that the government has set up a command centre to coordinate and share information with public even as anger among Kenyans and despair among family and friends continued to mount at the recovery scene.

“The government is committed to the recovery exercise, we want to retrieve the bodies and the vehicle wreckage as soon as possible,” she said.

Koimett observed that powerful ocean currents coupled with poor visibility beneath the ocean was hindering the search operation.

“Underwater search is not an ordinary operation. There is darkness beneath the waters, the current is strong, the terrain below is also hilly and there are also valleys… At the same time this channel is busy. So, the exercise is a tricky one,” she said.

Earlier, government spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said that the recovery exercise is delicate and could take more time.

“Aerial photos taken by plane detected metals in 14 possible areas where we were expecting to find the bodies plus the wreckage… However, there was nothing found in five of the locations. We have therefore narrowed down the search to a smaller area of nine locations where we believe the bodies could be located, ” Oguna said.

Oguna called for patience saying due to the poor visibility, robots are being used to locate the bodies and the car.

“The divers are not relying on their vision, they are relying on touch and it is on that touch they can be able to interpret if what they are touching is a vehicle. The robots direct them where to touch and go,” said Oguna

Remarks by the two were in clear contradiction with Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) Managing Director, Bakari Gowa, who on Tuesday reported that the bodies and the wreckage had been located at two points underwater.

In his press briefing on Tuesday, Gowa said the bodies and wreckage were detected in two spots at 75 feet and 173 feet which were the search focus.

The search mission is being conducted by a team of divers and spotters from Kenya Navy, Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Kenya Ports Authority as well as local divers hired by the bereaved family.

But on Wednesday, tension rocked the search mission after government authorities ordered privately commissioned divers- Kenya Rescue Divers under Musa Sila – to withdraw from the search for unknown reasons.

This is after the private divers hired by the family told media they had not located the car nor the bodies.

However, KFS Chairman, Dan Mwazo, intervened to allow the divers continue with the mission.

Kenya Navy and KPA teams are coordinating the operation by use of underwater camera enabled robots which are immersed in water to capture the underwater world in an operation which is monitored via a laptop screen by spotters in a motorboat afloat.

On Wednesday, the search mission was suspended shortly before midday as divers allowed waters to calm before resuming again at around 3.00pm.

KFS cleared the channel in the morning and evening hours to give the divers room for clear visibility.

Col. Lawrence Gituma, who is leading the Kenya Navy divers in the operation, said sea traffic at the channel will continue to be interrupted until the exercise is over.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, who visited the scene of the accident for the first time on four days, was booed as tried to address hundreds of residents who pitched camp at the scene.

The governor, who remained silent since the incident happened, asked government agencies to hasten the operation.

“We understand that the complexity of the search operations is the reason for the delay, and, therefore, we are asking for patience. We are part of the multi-agency team involved in the search operations,” Joho said.

Haki Africa executive director, Hussein Khalid, said the poor recovery exercise was an indictment on the side of the government as it shows lack on preparedness in disaster management.

Was it mere luck or prowess in predicting matches? A punter did the unthinkable and correctly predicted 4 correct score bets on 4 games via Odibets, which is one of the few licensed betting companies in Kenya.

Oh, and that’s only one crazy part of the story. His win came from a bet against 8976 odds and a stake of 100/= which secured 718,080/= for him.

Unbelievable, right?

Dalton Kisaka, a pump attendant from Taita Taveta, has placed over 300 football bets with Odibets since joining and correct scores are his favorite markets.

“Strikers and teams should score goals and that’s why my choice of bets are correct score markets. Odibets has boosted odds on them,” he says.

“It is not easy to bet like this because the odds are so against you. However, the wins cover everything. I rarely bet on more than 3 games but my wins are huge,” Kisaka adds while encouraging Kenyans to join Odibets because of the boosted odds and fast loading website.

Speaking during the winners’ unveiling, Odibets Country Marketing Manager Aggrey Sayi said that Odibets is focused on giving a better betting experience to customers with various options in the betting marketing that are breathtaking.

“We offer up to 120 markets to ensure that we take bets for nearly every interesting outcome on events. The best way to experience is to join and to redeem your two free bets,” Sayi concludes.

Central Bank of Kenya Governor Dr Patrick Njoroge has revealed the amount of money in old Ksh 1000 the state was able to collect in the just concluded demonetisation exercise.

Speaking during a press conference at the CBK headquarters in Nairobi on Wednesday, Njoroge said that the State has collected 209.66 million old-generation Ksh1, 000 notes out of the 217 million pieces that were in circulation by September 30

Njoroge said that throughout the exercise that began on Madaraka Day, June 1, the State flagged 3, 172 suspicions transactions.

He noted that Kenya had two reasons which triggered the demonisation exercise.

“Demonetisation is done for a number of reasons. In Kenya, we did it for two reasons: the first one, was to deal with illicit financial flows in Kenya and other countries. The second reason was that we needed to deal with counterfeiting of the Kenyan currency; the bank note of choice was Ksh1, 000,” said Njoroge.

“We did not do that to destabilise your financial position,” he added.

The CBK chief said the regulator chose a 4-month window to wipe out the old-generation Ksh1, 000 notes so as to give Kenyans ample time to exchange the old money with new tender.

“There are two general approaches to demonitisation. The first one is what is called the shock approach, where you demonitise overnight. This happens where there is significant dislocations in the economy. The other approach is the gradual approach, which minimises disruptions to the economy and also enhance the effectiveness in addressing the objectives; in our case, it is corruption, money-laundering and tax evasion,” said Njoroge.

“There are some questions that Kenyans asked throughout the exercise: Some said: ‘was 4 months enough’? Others said: ‘Was 4 months too much? Maybe we should have done 2 months’. We had to strike a balance between being overly generous for the common mwananchi to allow them a lot of time to exchange the old money,” said Njoroge.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has cautioned a Senate committee against being used by malicious people to taint his good reputation.

Kibwana accused the Senate’s watchdog team of accepting documents that are not procedurally correct before the House.

The governor was speaking on Tuesday at the Makueni County Assembly when he appeared before the committee to answer questions over alleged loss of Sh1.4 billion through fraudulent procurement, conflict of interest and money laundering by this administration.

Senators queried the quality of the Auditor-General’s report that gave the Kibwana administration a clean bill of health in the 2017/18 Financial Year report.

“I am beginning to question the rigour and the seriousness the auditors who were sent to Makueni County had. I am beginning to think that is a lazy report,” said committee chair Moses Kajwang’.
