Cyrus Jirongo's final moments

The late politician Cyrus Jirongo’s final moments have taken a dramatic turn after new details suggested that he was most likely being trailed before he met his death in a tragic accident at Karai, along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

As the police focus on Park Place along Magadi Road in Karen, the last known location Jirongo visited before the fatal crash, a proper analysis of the CCTV footage has exposed more details, raising further questions about the circumstances that led to the fatal crash of Jirongo.

Jirongo had reportedly spent the evening at Karen Oasis with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and city real estate mogul Rebman Malala before telling friends he was heading home to Gigiri.

However, questions are now being raised about the final movements of Jirongo, including a white Probox seen in the CCTV footage.

The CCTV footage that was analysed by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives investigating the matter shows Jirongo’s Mercedes Benz vehicle entering a petrol station at about 2:18 a.m., then making a U-turn before rejoining the highway, where a bus later collided head-on with his car.

Separate footage now shows a Toyota Probox entering the station seconds before the crash, which has raised questions in public discussions of the final moments of Jirongo.

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, at dawn, a white car drove into the petrol station right behind Jirongo without fuelling and stopped at pump number two.

It had three men, as seen in the CCTV footage. One of them got out and walked to where Jirongo’s car had been and then returned. A second man stepped out and walked to the co-driver’s door as a third man peeped out of the car.

It was at that time that the accident, according to CCTV footage, happened. The coincidence raises fresh questions about a car seeking no service at a station and being followed by the death of a prominent personality.

Cyrus Jirongo’s autopsy

Family pathologist Joseph Ndung’u on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, revealed that Jirongo died from a blunt force trauma that caused severe injuries to the chest, abdomen, spine, and legs.

Jirongo succumbed to injuries sustained in a road traffic accident involving his Mercedes-Benz and a Climax Coaches bus at the Karai area along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

DCI Investigations into Jirongo’s death

The DCI on Tuesday, December 16, released new details into the circumstances surrounding the death of Jirongo, and revealed that it had kicked off a probe into his death.

The DCI stated that the collision occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m., resulting in a head-on collision. Investigators say the force of the crash pushed Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to rest roughly 50 metres away.

A combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory visited the scene, documented evidence, and secured key exhibits. Among the critical evidence recovered was CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the crash site.

According to the DCI, preliminary analysis of the footage shows that at 2:18:40 a.m., Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. At 2:19:10 a.m., his vehicle stopped at the station’s exit before making a right turn back towards Nairobi at 2:19:19 a.m.

Moments later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into his vehicle.

Detectives have interrogated the bus driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. He has been released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.

Fresh details have emerged over the road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

As Kenyans and leaders continue to question the circumstances that led to the fatal crash involving Jirongo’s Mercedes Benz and a Climax Coaches bus, an eye witness has stepped forward to give an account of the accident, which contradicts the narration of the Climax Coaches bus driver.

A petrol station security guard provided new information regarding the accident, casting doubts on what the bus driver had made Kenyans to believe.

The late Cyrus Jirongo’s wrecked vehicle.

Ephraim Cheptek, the security guard at the petrol station where Jirongo had entered and left without fuelling before crashing right in front of the station, contradicted the driver’s earlier claims that Jirongo was overlapping when he rammed into the bus.

Cheptek, who witnessed the crash, said he was the only person alert at the time of the accident, which occurred at 3:00 am, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the crash were unusual.

“At the time when he was crashed by the bus, I was the only person who was awake, and I clearly saw what took place,” Cheptek told journalists.

According to the guard, Jirongo drove into the petrol station in a very unusual manner, as if he intended to refuel his vehicle. He, however, never fuelled his vehicle and instead drove away.

“When he entered the petrol station, he slowed, and while he was about to refuel his vehicle, he again drove away and joined the road. So the way he approached the petrol station was unusual,” the security guard added.

Cheptek went ahead to refute claims that the road was congested at the time of the crash, noting that the highway was calm and clear, with no gridlock on either lane.

He further disclosed that no vehicle was trailing Jirongo’s Mercedes before the accident and that the alleged traffic only began immediately after the deadly crash.

“The road was calm, and there was no traffic, and it was after the accident that other vehicles began lining up, causing a traffic jam on this road,” Cheptek said.

Cheptek’s account, however, directly contradicts that of the driver of the ill-fated bus, who had earlier alleged that the politician was driving from a petrol station when he noticed a heavy traffic jam along his lane and decided to overtake.

The driver on Saturday, December 13, insisted that the accident was avoidable, adding that although he saw Jirongo’s vehicle overtaking, there was nowhere to escape, prompting the head-on-collision.

“When I tried to save him from crashing into my vehicle, I felt the possibility of my vehicle rolling over, so I stopped and let him ram into my bus. When the police came, it is when i learned that the victim was Honourable Jirongo,” the driver stated.

Caleb Amisi

Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has called for a thorough and independent investigation into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo.

In a statement shared via his official X account, Amisi cautioned against premature narratives before official police findings are released.

Amisi’s statement comes hours after the driver of a Climax Coaches bus involved in the crash gave his account to the media. The MP argues that it was improper for any party to publicly explain the incident ahead of formal investigations and communication by law enforcement agencies.

“A proper, independent investigation must be carried out around the Karai accident. It is wrong for the driver of the Climax bus to come out first to speak before the police conduct investigations and officially communicate on the incident,” Amisi said.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai, involving Jirongo’s vehicle and a Climax Coaches bus. Jirongo died at the scene.

The bus driver, identified as Tiras Kamau Githinji, had earlier spoken to the media, claiming that Jirongo’s vehicle entered the highway from a petrol station without giving way, leading to a head-on collision.

The driver of a Climax Coaches bus involved in a deadly early-morning road crash that claimed the life of businessman and former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has given a detailed account of the tragic incident.

The fatal accident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2025, along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, involving a Climax Coaches bus and a Mercedes-Benz vehicle driven by Jirongo.

Speaking after the incident, the bus driver, Tiras Kamau Githinji, identified himself and said he has worked with Climax Coaches for eight years.

“Mimi naitwa Tiras Kamau Githinji, driver wa Climax Coaches. Nimefanyia kampuni miaka nane,” he said.

According to Githinji, he was driving from Nairobi to Busia when the crash happened. He claimed that Jirongo’s vehicle entered the highway from a petrol station without giving way, leading to a head-on collision.

“Ile Mercedes ilikuwa inatoka kwa petrol station. Mimi natoka Nairobi naenda Busia. Mercedes hakugive way wakati aliingia kwa barabara,” he explained.

The driver further stated that traffic congestion on the highway may have influenced the late former MP’s decision to join the road.

“Aliona magari zimeweka jam, akaamua kuingia upande yangu. Tukakutana kichwa na kichwa,” Githinji said.

At the time of the accident, the Climax Coaches bus was reportedly carrying 65 passengers, a fact that forced Githinji to make a split-second decision to prevent a larger tragedy.

“Nilijaribu kuokoa yeye, nikaskia gari yangu inaweza enda chini. Ndiyo nikakanyaga breki, lakini akakuja kama ameniingia,” he recounted.

The impact was fatal for Jirongo, who was alone in his vehicle and died on the spot. None of the bus passengers were reported to have lost their lives, though several sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Githinji said he only learned the identity of the victim after police officers arrived at the scene.

“Baadaye maaskari walipokuja ndipo niliskia ni Mheshimiwa Cyrus Jirongo,” he said.

Police have since launched investigations into the crash as Kenyans continue to mourn the death of Jirongo, a prominent businessman and influential political figure whose life was cut short in the tragic accident.

The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility is low and traffic behavior can be unpredictable.

Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera and Bungoma County governor Ken Lusaka are among the leaders who have mourned Jirongo, with Lusaka describing him as one of the Luhya nation’s greatest sons.

“Death has robbed us one of our greatest sons. Rest in peace, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” Lusaka wrote on X.

“What is Life !!! Rest well my friend and constituent Hon.Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo!” Nabii Nabwera wrote on Facebook.

COTU boss Francis Atwoli has also mourned Jirongo.

“This morning, with a lot of shock and sadness, I have learnt of the passing on of Cyrus Jirongo who was an asset to our community and Kenya. We loved him but God loved him more. May your soul rest in peace!” Atwoli wrote on X.

Jirongo, a prominent businessman and politician, served as Lugari MP and remained an influential figure in national politics for decades. He was widely known for his outspoken views and active engagement in public affairs even after leaving elective office.

Cyrus Jirongo’s biography

Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo was born on March 21, 1961.

He attended Mang’u High School between 1978 and 1981. He became widely known at a young age for his political organizing skills rather than for a formal professional background.

Jirongo rose to national prominence in 1992 as the leader of Youth for KANU 92, a powerful political lobby group formed to support President Daniel arap Moi during Kenya’s first multiparty elections. The group played a major role in mobilization and fundraising and made Jirongo one of the most influential young political figures of the early 1990s.

Before holding elective office, Jirongo served as chairman of AFC Leopards Football Club in 1991. This role helped raise his public profile beyond politics. During the 1990s, Jirongo was associated with several business ventures, particularly in real estate and agriculture.

He publicly claimed to have become a billionaire at a young age. Over time, however, many of these ventures became heavily indebted, leading to prolonged legal and financial disputes. In 1997, Jirongo was elected Member of Parliament for Lugari Constituency.

In 2002, President Moi appointed him Minister for Rural Development in the final KANU government. He lost his parliamentary seat in the 2002 general election but regained it in 2007 under his own party, the Kenya African Democratic Development Union.

Between 2008 and 2013, he was the only Member of Parliament from that party. In 2013, Jirongo expressed interest in the presidency but eventually ran unsuccessfully for the Kakamega Senate seat. He supported Raila Odinga in the presidential race.

In 2017, he contested the presidency under the United Democratic Party but received a very small share of the national vote. His party later joined the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the 2022 elections. After the election, he publicly congratulated President William Ruto.

From the mid-2000s onward, Jirongo faced mounting debts linked to bank loans and private lenders. Several courts ruled against him in loan recovery cases. In 2017, the High Court declared him bankrupt after failing to repay loans amounting to hundreds of millions of shillings.

Properties linked to companies associated with him were placed under receivership or auctioned. Courts also ordered him to repay large sums to individuals, including trade unionist Francis Atwoli. Jirongo is polygamous and has a large family.

He has spoken publicly about having wives from different communities. In 2025, he suffered personal tragedy following the death of one of his daughters after a short illness.

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala has threatened to dump the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) should the coalition associate itself with ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The vocal lawmaker told off the former Premier to cease from deceiving other leaders for his own benefits.

Speaking while addressing locals in Bungoma town during the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) people’s tour of the the Western region on Friday November 26, 2021, Malala urged other leaders to refuse the mind games played by Raila.

The first time senator noted that Raila’s political game ends up benefitting him and his people alone.

Malala’s rant comes days after Raila attended the Wiper party’s National Delegates Convention (NDC) at the Kasarani Gymnasium where Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka was endorsed as the party’s flag bearer in the coming 2022 general elections.

Malala noted that in 2017, Western Kenya leaders united to support NASA whose flag bearer was Raila, who then went into a political marriage with President Kenyatta through the famous March 2018 handshake without consulting his co-principals.

The lawmaker argued that Raila was given Kshs. 250 billion to build up his supporters, but he instead went ahead to use the money for his own benefit.

“I want Wetangula, Mudavadi and Kalonzo to learn a lesson from Raila after he went into agreement with President Kenyatta he forgot about NASA issues,” he said.

According to Malala, Raila used the alleged funds to build his Kisumu region, neglecting the western region.

He warned that OKA supporters would defect to other alliances should the coalition bring the Orange party on board.

“If you are going to unite independently as One Kenya Alliance (OKA) we are going to support you but if you are going to include ODM then we promise to decamp,” he said.

In presence was the Bungoma senator Moses Masika Wetangula who noted that people should have faith in One Kenya Alliance for it is the one going to form the next government in 2022.

Wetang’ula further noted that OKA will not betray Kenyans but instead bring equity, employment and change
among Kenyans.

Also present during the OKA tour of the Bungoma County was ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, his KANU counterpart Gideon Moi, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka and former Presidential aspirant Cyrus Jirongo.
