Johnson Sakaja

Former Nairobi County governor Mike Sonko has sounded a warning to current governor Johnson Sakaja over a City Hall employee who has been fraudulently milking millions from the County coffers.

Sonko took to his official social media accounts and posted a photo of governor Sakaja alongside his juniors, and sounded a warning, claiming that one of the people in the photo would put Sakaja in trouble.

According to Sonko, the said employee keeps on recycling the already paid vouchers that run into hundreds of millions.

Sonko went ahead to warn that he will soon call out the employee and expose his/her name for the people to know.

“Gavanaree kuna mtu hapa nataka uchungane nae asikushikishe handball. Kazi yake ni kurecycle vouchers zile zishalipwa worth hundreds of millions. Hata yeye naenda kumuuma any time. Kaa rada,” Sonko posted on his official X account.

Netizens started to anxiously react, urging Sonko to point out the said employee in the photo.

By the time of publishing this article, Sonko had not pointed out the person he had accused in the photo.

Governor Sakaja had also not reacted on Sonko’s post by the time of publishing this article.

Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has urged Kenyans on the internet to put Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga Oginga in prayers.

This is after Sonko met the former East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP at the United Kenya Club in Nairobi.

Sonko who noted that politics has no permanent enemity said Dr. Oburu Oginga was walking on crutches at the time they met.

He urged Kenyans to pray for the speedy recovery of the Siaya Senator.

“There’s no permanent enemity in politics I met the Siaya County Senator Hon. @dr_oburuoginga at the United Club here in Nairobi akiwa na crutches. Hebu let’s pray for his quick recovery,” Sonko tweeted.

Dr Oburu won the Siaya senatorial seat during the August 2022 general election, succeeding James Orengo who successfully contested for the Siaya gubernatorial seat.

He recently underwent a surgery in India.

It was reported that Dr Oginga, who is serving his first term in the Senate, underwent a knee surgery on November 26, 2022 at an Indian hospital known as Yashoda.

While commenting on why he had sought treatment in India, Dr. Oginga said compared to Kenya, treatment in India is cheap, adding that had he been treated in Kenya he would have incurred a bill three times what he has incurred in India.

The woman who featured in ex Nairobi governor Mike Sonko’s leaked tapes has come out to clarify that she was under duress when she made the sensational claims against some judges and advocates.

In a police case filed under OB14/21/11/21 at Karen Police Station, Merry Nkatha narrated in a press conference how she was coerced by the former governor to implicate several people for which in return, she was promised a whooping Sh20,000,000.

According to her statement, Nkatha narrated how last week on Saturday she was carjacked at gun point by three men who identified themselves as police officers adding that the three men pushed their way into her car and roughed her up before giving her a script to read.

Her police statement reads, “They then told me that Sonko will call me and for any question he asked me, I was to answer according the what was in the script.

“The documents were in form of a questionnaire and answers leading to implicate Advocate Cecil Miller and others. One man held a gun to my neck, while the other put a gun on my face.

“When Sonko called, I was so shaken that I could not answer the way they wanted so one man slapped me around and asked Sonko to call back after I was calm.

“He called after a while and I answered the way they wanted. After that, they left me and threatened to kill me if I reported to the police.”

At the press conference, Nkatha even showed journalists her communication with Sonko from her call history, with the incoming calls and their durations from her phone to prove that the kidnapping actually took place.

“I have never met Cecil Miller, Bishop Mureithi, I don’t know Judge Kantai. I have never met the likes of Chitembwe. Everything people heard on these leaked Sonko expose on the judiciary, I was coerced to do it. Right now, I am living in fear because anything can happen to me.”

She admitted that she has known Sonko for a while and they were friends.

“The reason he chose me for this project is because he knows me very well and he knows I am friend with the current governor Kananu, so I can be a credible witness in front of the Judicial Service Commission when they investigate the judges who ruled in favor of ousting Sonko.”

The legal battle between former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and Deputy Governor Ann Kananu could deny Nairobi County a substantive governor until after the 2022 elections.

Another whose fate is on the balance is the Nairobi Metropolitan Service because a deed of transfer of functions to the National Government is expected to expire in March next year. This can only be extended by a substantive office holder with the backing of the County Assembly.

While the elections are 10 months away, Sonko’s move to the Supreme Court to stop the swearing in of Ms. Kananu as governor has lifted the lid on a ploy to delay her ascension to power through legal hurdles.

On Monday, the Supreme Court stopped Kananu’s ascension to the seat after Sonko challenged a Court of Appeal decision on Friday that dismissed his case against her assumption of office.

The Court of Appeal declared that the ex-governor has been out of office for more than 10 months hence he is no longer the county boss.

Legal experts have argued that these supremacy battles could lead to the governor’s office remaining vacant until August 9, 2022.

Constitutional lawyer Bobby Mkangi has argued that that Sonko’s appeals have led to litigation suits that continue to delay the selection of a substantive governor.

He noted that Kananu has no option but to wait until the legal suits are done away with and the courts decide the way forward for Nairobi.

Also, there is another pending case at the Appelate court that seeks to establish whether Sonko was illegally impeached. The case is coming up for consideration and determination next month.

Mkangi argued that Sonko’s move to the Supreme Court will buy him time. He added that Nairobi County could go for a by-election if the court finds out Kananu’s appointment was unlawful.

If the court finds she’s in office illegally, then this will give IEBC a chance to plan for a by-election within 90 days even as the Speaker occupies the seat in acting capacity.

Kananu who is acting governor is currently barred from conducting some Executive roles as stipulated in Section 30 of the County Government Act and the Constitution.

Sonko is still hopeful of reclaiming his seat. He told his followers in a video clip shared on his Facebook page to be patient and wait for November when the petition challenging the removal will be heard.

Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka has now joined the City Hall cartels who want to ensure Anne Kananu is sworn in illegally as Nairobi Governor.

Lusaka who is famously known for the ‘Wheelbarrow scandal’ during his reign as Bungoma Governor now wants to ensure Kananu takes over the County by pushing the courts to dismiss the case which is pending judgment before the High Court challenging Kananu’s assumption of office and her planned swearing in as substantive Governor.

Lusaka who frequents Fair Acres Hotel in Karen in the company of Kananu is reportedly making phone calls to judicial officers claiming President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed him to ensure all petitions seeking to revoke the swearing in of Kananu as DG and Substantive Governor as well are dismissed.

According to sources at the hotel, the two normally leave the hotel in the wee hours of the night.

The Senate Speaker was recently paid millions of shillings by Kananu through his garbage collection firm, Wakiwa Company ltd which is alleged to be collecting garbage in Westlands area despite the company having only two lorries with one still grounded.

Lusaka now wants Kananu to be confirmed as Nairobi Governor so that his firm can continue getting the multi million shillinga tenders at City Hall. Lusaka’s daugther is also a contractor at City Hall and her firm which supplies stationery to Nairobi Couty Gov’t has also been paid millions courtesy of Kananu.

The High Court is expected to rule on LSK’s case seeking to nullify Kananu’s nomination as Deputy Governor and stop her swearing in as Governor on June 24, 2021.

Drama ensued at the Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday, February 9, when police arrived and picked up former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko was today (Tuesday) expected to appear in Court for the ruling of his assault case.

Sonko had been admitted to the hospital on Monday night after complaining of stomach complications and high blood pressure while at the Gigiri police cells.

Ahead of the court session, police were informed the former governor was at the hospital.

They drove there and picked him up and took him to the court at around 11.15 am.

It is not clear if the doctors at the hospital cleared the transfer given he had been there for more than six hours.

Witnesses said the hospital management avoided any drama and allowed him to be taken away.

He appeared in court in the company of an ambulance medic. This came ahead of his two key rulings in court on if he should be released on bond.

On Tuesday, a Kiambu Magistrate’s court is first expected to rule on his application to be released on bond in a multiple case of assault and robbery he is facing.

A Kahawa West court is also expected to make a ruling on an application by the police to be allowed to detain Sonko for 30 days as they investigate terror-related charges.

Sonko was admitted with stomach complications ahead of the key court rulings.

Officials aware of the developments said Sonko was rushed to hospital from Gigiri police station aboard an ambulance and admitted there.

The ex-governor was set to know if he will be freed after the rulings.

A Kiambu Magistrate’s court will first rule on his application to be released on bond in a multiple case of assault and robbery he is facing.

A Kahawa West court was also expected to make a ruling on an application by the police to be allowed to detain Sonko for 30 days as they investigate terror-related charges.

His legal team is concerned with reports that police plan to revive old cases that they believe were settled.

Over the weekend, plainclothes officers from the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) arrested seven of his aides, adding the list to nine of the aides that have been put in police custody after being linked to terrorism activities.

Sonko’s woes seem to be far from over, after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) commenced investigations into how he allegedly faked his death in 2005.

Besides probing Sonko’s “alleged death”, the DCI has also launched further investigations into several past cases, that the former flamboyant governor is linked to.

According to reports, the detectives are said to have begun the probe following a request from Shimo La Tewa Prison where Sonko is said to have escaped from.

Kinoti was, however, quick to dismiss claims by Sonko’s allies and friends that he is being persecuted for allegedly reading from a different political script with the powers that be.

“DCI is a professional entity that conducts its investigations in accordance with the law. We are completely non-partisan in politics,” Kinoti said.

Sonko is expected to be questioned over a fake death certificate bearing his name, and purportedly issued on June 20, 2005. The cause of death was indicated as cardio-pulmonary arrest.

Sonko’s escape from Shimo La Tewa facility has always been a source of heated debate between himself and State authorities.

Various accounts indicate that Sonko escaped from the maximum prison some 20 years ago.

He is said to have been released in 2001 after allegedly claiming that he was HIV positive and epileptic.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is sick and has been admitted in the hospital.

His admission comes ahead of two court rulings that are scheduled for today.

He was admitted and is in a stable condition, an official who saw him said.

“Authorities at the facility wrote to the DCI requesting for investigations to establish the authenticity of the death certificate. They have requested that Sonko should be taken back there to complete his sentence term should the death certificate be established to be fake,” a well-placed source told a local daily.

“We have re-opened several files on him that are under investigations. I am however not in a position to give the fine details of the cases,” DCI boss Kinoti said.

Sonko was released by now deceased High Court judge Samuel Oguk from prison three months before completing the one year sentence after claiming he was HIV positive.

Later in a sworn affidavit, Sonko claimed that he was suffering from chronic tuberculosis and peptic ulcers.

“Currently, I am admitted at the prison hospital and my chances of survival are very minimal, hence seek to be released on medical grounds or in compliance of the Presidential Amnesty Exercise dated 12/12/2000,” Sonko stated in an affidavit dated 2/2/2001.

But in 2011, then Commissioner of Prisons said at a press conference that Sonko escaped from lawful custody on April 16, 1998, while he was admitted at the Coast Provincial General Hospital.

Now a death certificate under the name, Kioko Gidion Mbuvi, the name he held before changing it in 2012, has become the subject of investigations by the DCI.

Sources at the Registrar of Persons told the People Daily that Sonko officially changed his name in a Gazette Notice No 1607 of February 10, 2012.

“Notice is hereby given that by a deed poll dated 1 February 2012, and duly registered by our client, formerly known as Mbuvi Gidion Kioko, formally and absolutely renounced and abandoned the use of his former names and in lie therefore assumed and adopted the name Mbuvi Gidion Kioko Mike Sonko,” the Gazette Notice read in part.

The death certificate indicates that Kioko Gidion Mbuvi died of a cardiacpulmonary arrest – a sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness.

He was initially summoned following his indirect admission of culpability,  when a fortnight ago, while in Rithumitu in Dagoreti, Nairobi county, he said he together with Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho and others, printed Orange Democratic Movement T-shirts and bought vehicles which they later burnt.

Sources at DCI said detectives are yet to commence investigations into his alleged culpability in the 2017 violence.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is said to have caused drama at Gigiri police station when he was ushered into the police cells on Tuesday, February 2.

According to police officers in the know, Sonko was ushered into the police cells at around 4.15 pm after undergoing police procedures.

Sonko was stripped of his VIP status and was subjected to removing one shoe and his belt.

Inside the cells, the former county chief met another five suspects who had been brought in for different offences.

At around 9.30 pm, the cell was transformed into a prayer centre as Sonko and his new friends broke into worship songs and intercession prayers.

The group was so loud that officers manning the report office had to ask them to lower their voices.

“Initially he was in a pensive mood but after a while, he cheered up and was busy chatting with other men in the cells,” said an officer at the station.

Only his family, doctor and lawyer were allowed to visit the former governor.

After leaving Gigiri Police Station, the former Nairobi Governor was arraigned at the Kiambu Law Courts on Wednesday and thereafter transferred briefly to the Kamiti Maximum Prison.

He was later charged at the Kahawa West Law Courts where he faced terrorism charges before being transferred back to Gigiri Police Station.

Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is now on his own after he recently made claims on how the 2017 post-election chaos were planned in Nairobi.

Sonko while at a rally in Dagoretti over the weekend, in presence of Deputy President William Ruto claimed that Interior PS Karanja Kibicho alongside him were the planners of the chaos.

Sonko has now been summoned to DCI over his statement claimed that they bought T-shirts, printed them ODM and bought second hand vehicles which were burnt by hired goons who disguised as ODM supporters so that Raila Odinga’s side can be blamed.

Jubilee Party leadership at the Nairobi County Assembly has now told Sonko to own up over his utterances that he was part of a team that planned the chaos.

Led by the Assembly majority leader Abdi Guyo, the leadership denounced Sonko’s actions saying that he did not act at the behest of the Jubilee party and perpetrated the chaos out of his own volition.

“Let it go on record that Sonko was acting on his own behalf and not on behalf of Jubilee and for political expediency and because he has already incriminated himself, then he needs to be charged on his own account,” said Guyo.

The MCAs were also concerned that the allegations made by Sonko against Interior PS Karanja Kibicho are serious and if left unchecked could have far-reaching consequences ahead of the 2022 general elections.

“We are convinced that Sonko incriminated himself by making the utterances on Sunday and as such he should be charged for the atrocities he committed to the people of Nairobi,” they said.

Guyo, who doubles as Matopeni ward MCA, dared Sonko to make public the names of those he claims are part of the deep state, at the same time warning him against linking Jubilee Party to the deep state.

He further called on the Directorate of Criminal investigations (DCI) to expedite the matter noting that it was an issue of great interest to the people of Nairobi and the country at large.

The sentiments by the ward legislators come just a day after Kibicho recorded a statement with the DCI over Sonko’s allegations.

The PS distanced himself from the allegations and accused Sonko of character assassination. He also vowed to seek legal redress by the end of the week.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has responded to Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho after he declared a total war against him.

Kibicho who spoke on Monday, Januray 25 after recording a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi, said he has had enough of Sonko’s character assasination.

Kibicho moved to DCI following claims by Sonko that they jointly organised chaos in Nairobi during the 2017 general polls and blamed it on Raila Odinga’s ODM.

Dr Kibicho noted that the former County chief must be ready to answer everything he has accused him of in a court of law.

He mentioned some of the accusations Sonko has previously made against him, among them being killing of former Interior Minister George Saitoti.

The seemingly angry Kibicho noted that Sonko must come out and tell Kenyans how Saitoti was killed, and warned Sonko to be ready for a tough battle in Court.

However, Sonko in his response dared Kibicho to bring on the battle.

He claimed that throughout his public life, he has never made claims that he cannot substantiate.

Sonko further insisted that he had spoken nothing but the truth.

“MY RESPONSE TO PS KARANJA KIBICHO I’ve learned from reliable media reports that Interior PS @Karanjakibicho presented himself to the DCI ostensibly to record a statement, even without an invitation, after the revelations I made yesterday while addressing the public in Dagoretti.

“I’ve also gathered that he plans to move to court this week purportedly to sue over my statement yesterday. My brief response to him is simple: BRING IT ON! Throughout my public life, I’ve NEVER made any allegations that I can’t substantiate, including the truth I spoke yesterday,” posted Sonko.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr Karanja Kibicho has finally had enough of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s dramas.

Kibicho on Monday, January 25 went to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters to record statement following claims by Sonko that they jointly organised chaos in Nairobi during the 2017 general polls and blamed it on Raila Odinga’s ODM.

Speaking just after recording the statement, Kibicho said that he was tired of Sonko’s continued character assasination, noting that the former County chief must be ready to answer everything he has accused him of in a court of law.

He mentioned some of the accusations Sonko has previously made against him, among them being killing of former Interior Minister George Saitoti.

The seemingly angry Kibicho noted that Sonko must come out and tell Kenyans how Saitoti was killed.

Sonko who since his impeachment has launched an assail on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his ‘Kieleweke’ allied Jubilee party members has taken his tirades a notch higher.

Speaking at a function in Dagorreti on Sunday, January 24, attended by Deputy President William Ruto, Sonko opened up on the atrocities he, alongside some senior government officials among them Kibicho, did to ensure that Raila Odinga’s side is blamed.

According to Sonko, they went and bought T-shirts, printed them with ODM colours, bought some second-hand vehicles and set them on fire, so that the ODM supporters can be blamed for being destructive.

‘I, Interior PS Karanja Kibicho and some members of the deep state printed T-shirts written ODM, bought second-hand vehicles, burned them along the highway so that it be pegged on ODM supporters, thus deeming them as violent and destructive,” he revealed.

Sonko was referring to the recent unrests that have been witnessed in the Rift Valley region, where some vehicles have been burned in what has been blamed on the war of class that is allegedly being fuelled by DP Ruto’s hustler vs dynasty narrative.

According to Sonko, it is ‘the system’ that is burning the vehicles, so that it can be blamed on DP Ruto’s hustler nation movement.

Some claimed that the embattled politician is currently digging his own political grave since the Tanga Tanga faction that he is appeasing at the moment will also lose trust in him.

Some argued that Sonko should just be picked up and returned to Shimo La Tewa prison to complete his jail term.

Ousted Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has stirred mixed reactions on the internet after he publicly confessed to what he did to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) supporters in 2017, with the help of ‘the deep state’.

Sonko who since his impeachment has launched an assail on President Uhuru Kenyatta and his ‘Kieleweke’ allied Jubilee party members has taken his tirades a notch higher.

Not even warnings by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria not to have him speak at public gatherings, especially at events attended by Deputy President William Ruto have been taken to consideration.

A picture made rounds on early this month of cows in a truck that were burnt in alleged dynasty, hustler wars.

The hustler movement is associated with DP Ruto who has on several occasions stated that his agenda is about Wanjiku (the ordinary Kenyan) and not about tribal politics.

The post which was circulated by various individuals on social media with the claim that innocent lives were at risk as political temperatures in the country continued to rise.

“The bodabodas burned this lorry plus the cows inside it in the name of hustlers vs dynasties for the simple reason that one of their colleagues was injured by the lorry,” embattled Thirdway Alliance party leader Ekuru Aukot noted.

However, it later emerged that the incident had happened in Nigeria, and not Kenya as it had been widely reported.

Instances of boda boda riders causing destruction to other motorists after a major accident have, however, been reported in Kenya.

On January, 14, boda boda riders blocked a section of Outer ring road in Nairobi after one of their own was knocked down by a lorry on the road.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has called for the arrest and prosecution of all Members of Nairobi County Assembly who participated in the impeachment of governor Mike Sonko.

Taking to his official Twitter account on Sunday, December 6, the ODM lawmaker said that the MCAs including the City Assembly speaker and clerk disobeyed court orders in their process to impeach the embattled governor.

Ledama insisted that there is no one that is above the law, including the head of state.

He accused those who participated in the impeachment process against governor Sonko, of defying a court order.

He went further to say that they must be cited for contempt, fined and jailed. Ledama argued that everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“No one is above the law! We must obey Court Orders! Not even the President! Nairobi MCA’s including the clerk and the speaker who defied the court order and impeached @MikeSonko must be cited for contempt, fined and jailed. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty!” tweeted senator Ledama.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has already confirmed receiving a notice from the Nairobi County Assembly seeking to impeach Governor Sonko.

Lusaka said that plans are underway to call for a special sitting next week, including the collection of 15 signatures required to call for the sitting.

Senate will then start the process of hearing the charges against the governor, after which they will uphold or vote against the impeachment motion.

88 out of 122 MCAs voted to remove Sonko from office, on grounds of;

i) Gross Violation of the Constitution or any other law (the County Governments Act, 2012, the Public Procurement and Disposal Act, 2015 and the Public Finance Management Act, 2012)

ii) Abuse of office and

iii) Crimes under National Law.

Two MCAs opposed the vote while twenty others abstained.

The motion to impeach Sonko was moved by Minority Leader Michael Ogada.

The Members of County Assembly said that Sonko had failed to approve the Sh37.4 billion budget to facilitate operations undertaken by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

However, Sonko’s allies, whom he had taken to Mombasa for vacation, claimed that Thursday’s voting was fraudulent because they were logged into the assembly’s system despite their mobile phones being off.

Sonko had taken about 57 MCAs to Diani, to deny the County Assembly quorum to oust him.

Sonko had earlier on petitioned the High Court to stop the ouster, arguing it was “illegal and unconstitutional.”

Nairobi County governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been directed to appear in court to plead afresh to new corruption charges.

Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti on Monday September 7, 2020 ordered the embattled County chief to present himself  in court on Monday next week.

Ogoti’s order comes after Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji amended the Ksh 357 million graft case facing Sonko.

A new charge of abuse of office was introduced in the amended charge sheet. The DPP said they will not be offering plea bargaining at this stage. Twenty witnesses have been lined up to testify in the case.

Ogoti said the case will be heard on a day to day basis. No applications or adjournment will be entertained during the hearing.

The prosecution has been told to supply a schedule of chronology in which they will call their witnesses.

The case will be allocated five hours on a daily basis with the hearing starting next Monday when a plea is taken.

Last week, Ogoti had encouraged parties in the Sh357 million corruption case involving Sonko to consider plea bargaining.

He said he always tells parties in corruption cases to seek plea bargaining before the case proceeds to full hearing.

However, the prosecution told the court that they had not offered a plea bargain to Sonko and his co-accused because the defence had not approached them.

Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi’s decision to resign seems to have been a major win for a section of city County politicians.

Just moments after she rendered her resignation, governor Mike Sonko was the first one to activate the celebration mode, with a series of praise and worship songs posted on his social media handles.

Later on in the day, Sonko held a press conference top throw blames at Elachi, arguing that she was the cause of all the problems at City Hall.

Sonko even argued that Elachi was being wrongly used by some people at President Kenyatta’s office to frustrate the operations of the County government.

But is it only Sonko who celebrated Elachi’s Tuesday morning exit?

Well, some MCAs of the troubled Nairobi County Assembly are said to have retreated for a brief party along a Thika Road hotel shortly after speaker Elachi threw in the towel.

According to a report by a local daily, a cross-section of ward reps celebrated the exit of the embattled speaker by toasting and tossing down glasses of wine over nyama choma, despite the ban on the sale of alcohol.

The venue of the party is owned by a city politician who has been a top gun, pushing for Elachi’s removal.

The party was held in a hurry within two hours. MCAs were then allowed to leave after they agreed on a rendezvous outside Nairobi in the coming weeks.
