Babu Owino

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has broken his silence following a tense and alarming confrontation with Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai at a popular Kilimani restaurant on Saturday, January 3, 2026.

The incident, which unfolded in full view of diners, has reignited debates over political tensions and the presence of firearms in public spaces.

According to Owino, the altercation began after he approached Alai’s table to greet him. Eyewitnesses say Alai accused Owino of orchestrating a series of online attacks against his wife, a claim the MP vehemently denied.

“Yesterday afternoon, a friend of mine who is a senior clergyman invited me for a meeting at a popular restaurant along Lenana Road in the Kilimani area. Having released my security detail for the Christmas holidays, I drove myself to the venue and arrived at approximately 3:40 p.m. We held our discussions for about twenty minutes, after which I stood up to leave. As I was departing, I noticed a group of people known to me seated at an adjacent table. Out of courtesy, I approached the table and greeted those present, including the MCA for Kileleshwa Ward, Hon. Robert Alai,” Babu Owino narrated.

“Without provocation, he accused me of being behind alleged social media attacks on his wife. I calmly explained that I do not know his wife, that she has never wronged me in any way, and that I have no reason whatsoever to involve innocent family members in politics. It is not my style to advance my politics by attacking women. I hold out respected ladies in the highest regard. I further pointed out that I do not even engage him personally, and therefore could not have engaged his wife.”

The situation escalated rapidly, with Alai allegedly drawing a pistol and striking Owino on the chest and jaw before pouring water on him.

Diners reportedly panicked as the confrontation unfolded, prompting the MP to leave the venue and report the matter to Kilimani Police Station.

“At that point, Hon. Alai became aggressive, pushed me, drew a pistol, and struck me on the chest and jaw with it, all in full view of patrons at the establishment. I stood my ground and urged him to calm down, asking him to explain what wrong I had committed to warrant such a violent reaction. He appeared to cool down, and we briefly sat, with another person positioning himself between us,” the MP stated.

“Moments later, he again turned hostile, picked a glass of water from the table, and poured it on my face. By then, a crowd had gathered, disturbed by his conduct. Upon witnessing this escalation of affairs, and wishing to avoid any physical confrontation, I then immediately left the premises and proceeded to Kilimani Police Station, where I reported the matter.”

Owino described the episode as part of a “sustained campaign of physical harassment and threats” against him, which he claims began after the funeral of former ODM leader Raila Odinga.

“As leaders, we are expected to set an example for society. Our calm should never be mistaken for fear,” he said.

Babu Owino with Robert Alai

A lunchtime outing at a popular Kilimani restaurant nearly descended into tragedy on Saturday after a heated confrontation between Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino spiralled into a terrifying gun scare that left diners shaken.

The dramatic incident unfolded at Cedars Lebanese Restaurant, where the two politicians arrived separately. According to eyewitnesses, Babu Owino was already seated and having lunch with another man when Alai walked in, spotted him, and headed straight to his table.

What began as a tense verbal exchange quickly escalated into a full-blown confrontation.

Witnesses say Alai accused Babu Owino of orchestrating a series of online attacks against his wife, allegedly through controversial social media commentator Maverick Aoko. In recent days, Aoko has published several stinging and highly personal posts on X targeting Alai’s wife.

“Alai alleged that Owino was behind the attacks and had hired Maverick Aoko to tarnish his wife’s name,” said a witness who was seated at the bar. “Babu denied it completely and said he does not even know Alai’s wife personally and has no reason whatsoever to malign her.”

As the argument intensified, tension rippled across the restaurant, with diners turning their attention to the unfolding standoff. Moments later, the situation took a shocking turn.

Several witnesses allege that Alai pulled out a pistol, cocked it, and pointed it directly at Owino, attempting to fire multiple times. The firearm, however, failed to discharge.

Panic erupted instantly. Diners screamed, ducked under tables, and scrambled for cover as fears of an imminent shooting gripped the restaurant.

In a decisive intervention, a senior police officer who was dining at the restaurant swiftly moved in and disarmed Alai before anyone was hurt. The officer was later identified as Mohamed Amin Shurie, a top official at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Following the intervention, a visibly shaken Alai reportedly left the restaurant immediately. Owino remained briefly before also departing, as staff and patrons struggled to process what they had just witnessed.

“No one could believe what had just happened,” said another diner. “This was one of the most frightening moments I’ve ever experienced in a public place.”

The incident has reignited public concern over the presence of firearms in social spaces and the conduct of political leaders, particularly in Nairobi’s upscale entertainment districts.

It has also revived memories of Babu Owino’s own troubled history with firearms. In January 2020, the Embakasi East MP was arrested and charged with the attempted murder of DJ Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve, following a shooting at B-Club lounge in Kilimani.

DJ Evolve survived the incident but suffered severe spinal cord injuries, leaving him permanently wheelchair-bound and dependent on constant medical care. The case was marked by numerous court delays and controversy after DJ Evolve’s family later filed an affidavit seeking to withdraw the attempted murder charges — a move that sparked widespread public outrage and allegations of coercion or an out-of-court settlement.

Although the state later pursued lesser charges of behaving in a disorderly manner while carrying a firearm, Owino has consistently maintained that the shooting was accidental.

When contacted over Saturday’s incident, Owino’s lawyer said he would consult his client and issue a statement, but had not done so by the time of publication. Alai had also not responded to requests for comment.

While no injuries were reported, those present described the confrontation as a chilling reminder of how quickly political rivalries can turn dangerous, even in the most ordinary public settings.

As investigations are expected to follow, questions are already being raised about firearm licensing, accountability, and the safety of Nairobi’s social spaces amid rising political tensions.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai

Outspoken Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has sharply criticized the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for what he terms as the promotion of political dynasties in the ongoing party polls in Kasipul.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Alai warned that the growing trend of political parties fronting family members to replace their kin in leadership positions is undermining Kenya’s democracy and eroding the credibility of political institutions.

“As ODM members participate in the party polls in Kasipul, I must strongly oppose the growing trend in Kenya of political parties endorsing family members to inherit leadership seats whenever a vacancy arises. This practice is eroding the very soul of our democracy. We are creating a culture where leadership is reduced to bloodlines and entitlement rather than service, merit, and the will of the people. When Kenyans start believing that only certain families are “destined” to lead, we damage the national psyche, kill ambition among the youth, and entrench dynasties instead of democracy,” Alai warned.

Dangerous political pattern

The ODM legislator noted that the practice, witnessed in Kasipul and other parts of the country, is becoming a dangerous pattern that could weaken faith in political parties as vehicles of fairness, inclusivity, and ideas.

Alai cited recent cases in constituencies such as Malava, Bobasi, Kibwezi West, Kanduyi, and Matungu, where family members were quickly endorsed to succeed their relatives. According to him, this has created the impression that leadership in Kenya is reserved for a few families, sidelining ordinary citizens with vision and competence.

“We exacerbate the anger and bitterness of a generation when we allow such behavior. We have seen it recently in Kasipul, where a family member was quickly fronted to replace their kin. In Malava, the same story. The same has happened in Bobasi, Kibwezi West, Kanduyi, and Matungu in the recent past. These are not isolated cases; they form a dangerous pattern. Who will have faith in political parties as institutions of ideas, fairness, and inclusivity? This practice makes political parties in Kenya vehicles of entitlement and private inheritance. Our democracy cannot grow if parties behave like family fiefdoms,” he stated.

Alai, a first-term MCA known for his bold views, urged ODM to lead by example in strengthening internal democracy, warning that any party that turns into a family fiefdom risks losing public trust.

“We must say no. Leadership should be about vision, competence, and commitment to service, not about who you are related to. Kenya’s democracy deserves better,” Alai stated.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai

Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai has listed Cabinet Secretaries who he says President William Ruto must fire for him to succeed in his first term.

Taking to his official social media handles Thursday morning, the blogger-politician listed CS Eliud Owalo ICT), Florence Bore (Labour and Social Protection), Aisha Jumwa (Public Service, Affirmative Action and Gender), Alfred Mutua (Fireign Affairs) and Roselinda Soipan Tuiya (Environment, Climate Change and Forestry).

He further accused Dr. Mutua of lacking truth and honesty.

“Ruto, if you want to succeed in your first term; Fire Eliud Owalo, Florence Bore, Aisha Jumwa, Alfred Mutua and Roselinda Soipan. Give them other jobs like directors elsewhere but the CS job imewashinda. Mtu kama Mutua I think doesn’t have any affinity with truth or honesty. His character is to exaggerate and tell petty fibs,” Alai posted on Twitter.

Alai’s comments comes amid speculations of a looming cabinet reshuffle.

The speculations are based on the attacks on some Cabinet Secretaries by President Ruto’s close allies.

Embattled Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni told one of the leading local dailies that the ongoing happenings are most likely being informed by an approaching cabinet reshuffle.

MPs allied to Ruto have been attacking ministers, the latest one being Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba.

Namwamba has found himself under heavy criticism over claims he failed to facilitate the Kenyan team that participated in the Special Olympics in Germany.

According to Kioni, these are not just MPs holding the minister to account, but possibly people being used to paint him and the others who have been accused black to give Ruto a reason to switch them.

Ruto’s MPs have also had issues with Owalo, Kithure Kindiki (Interior), Susan Nakhumicha (Health) Florence Bore (Labour) and Alfred Mutua of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Do you think Robert Alai’s advice to the head of state is as a result of the actions of the above-mentioned MPs?

Have you been drinking borehole water in Nairobi? Well, boreholes allow businesses and homes to access private water supply with no restrictions and fewer costs, but how safe is this water?

Kileleshwa ward Member of County Assembly (MCA)-cum blogger Robert Alai Friday morning sparked a debate when he advised Nairobi residents to avoid drinking borehole water.

Taking to his official Twitter account, Alai told people living in Nairobi to reduce the consumption of the borehole water, noting that it has been slowly killing people.

“The borehole water in Nairobi is killing you people. We must reduce the consumption of the borehole water. Please guys,” Alai posted.

But why do you think the politician-blogger is warning people to reduce the consumption of borehole water?

Well, a lot of companies such as farms, hotels or schools will use a lot of water each day, making a borehole a much more affordable option in the long run. Although all of this free water seems great, there are a lot of questions about it since borehole water isn’t cleaned in the same way that mains water is.

Mains water mainly comes from recycled wastewater which has been purified to be made safe for drinking purposes. Boreholes, on the other hand, get their water straight from the ground which won’t go through the same treatment processes as mains water.

Safety of borehole water

Do you live at an apartment? Does it have a borehole? You agree with me that most of the waters supplied in most Nairobi apartments are pumped directly from the borehole into the storage tanks then supplied in the houses for consumption.

Whereas you can drink borehole water, there are rules and regulations defining the parameters to look out for before taking borehole water for consumption.

Borehole water can only be fit for drinking once it has been tested and approved by a health officer.

Unlike mains water, which is actually 60% recycled wastewater, water from boreholes comes straight from the ground making it 100% fresh and natural.

However, since it is coming straight from the ground this means that it could possibly have higher levels of iron, magnesium, calcium or other minerals as well as some bacteria.

Most of these are harmless however, to vulnerable people like babies, it could have some implications on their health, which is why it is important to get the water checked before drinking it.

Treatment of borehole water

Most apartments in Nairobi that have allowed tenants to drink borehole water have been treating it by chlorination. But do you know that this still poses a danger to your health?

Various studies have found that chlorination without regulation is not good for human consumption.

Borehole water can cause high blood pressure

A Nigerian medical doctor once revealed that borehole water consumption can lead to high blood pressure.

Each borehole, if you have not greater than 75mg of chlorine per liter, it’s okay. But by the time it starts getting up to 200mg per liter, it will start giving you a salty taste.

Most Nairobi borehole waters are salty.

Former Kiambu County governor Ferdinand Waititu is yet again on the spotlight for allegedly grabbing one of the streets in Nairobi CBD.

Waititu is alleged to have grabbed an area along Titar Lane that joins Tubman road and Biashara street.

Controversial blogger Robert Alai on Thursday August 6, 2020 shared the photos of the allegedly grabbed area, calling on the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) to intervene.

Alai further revealed how Waititu has constructed a concrete staircase and put up a gate to block the public from using the lane.

Alai also alleged that Waititu has grabbed the area to serve his newly opened Salehe hotel.

“Former governor Waititu has apparently grabbed this area. This is Titar Lane that joins Tubman rd and Biashara st. He has constructed a concrete staircase and put up a gate to serve his newly opened Salehe hotel. Therefore blocking it to public use,” Alai posted.

This is not however, the first time Waititu is finding himself in such scandals.

In 2019, the former County boss was accused of using his office position to take land away from a widow.

Investigations revealed that a prime property belonging to Ms Cecilia Mbugua was fraudulently transferred to Ms Esther Nyatu through the office of the governor and the Waititu himself.

Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ) Chairperson Florence Kajuju handed over title deeds back to Ms Mbugua following an admission by Waititu of his role in taking away the land worth Sh100 million.

The commission’s investigations revealed that two properties – Thika Municipality/BlockXI/877 and Thika Municipality/BlockXI/878 – belonging to Ms Mbugua, were transferred to Ms Nyatu, in a process facilitated by Waititu.

The investigation followed a complaint filed with the commission on March 5, 2019.

Kiambu County land officials revealed that Mr Waititu facilitated the transfer and provided all the required documents.
