A heavy down pour being witnessed across the country turned tragic in Nairobi’s Kibra slams on Thursday night after at least four people got killed by floods.

Reports indicate that the victims met their death after they were swept by floods while crossing Mutuine River in Kibra, Nairobi.

This followed heavy rains that were experienced in the city and it’s environs on Thursday evening.

According to witnesses, the four were swept away by the raging water as they tried to cross a bridge there.

Their bodies were however yet to be found on Friday morning.

A search and rescue mission was ongoing in the area with hopes of finding them.

Police and rescuers said they fear more deaths would be reported because of the floods that affected various informal settlements in the city.

Nairobi police boss Augustine Nthumbi said teams had been mobilized to help in the search and rescue missions.

He added they are conducting a survey to check the extent of the issue. Property of unknown value was destroyed in the floods that ensued.

Residents of some estates reported flooding in their areas which affected their operations.

Some residents were forced to endure long hours on the road while others were forced to spend the night on the road following heavy rains that continue to pound the capital.

The heavy downpour resulted in heavy traffic gridlock, flooded roads as well as cutting off of sections of roads making the movement of traffic a nightmare.

Motorists and commuters alike have had to suffer the consequences of the heavy rains with others forced to spend the night on the road.

The situation has been worsened by ongoing infrastructural developments going on across the city with the construction of the Nairobi Expressway playing a major role in the mess.

Motorists have been forced to wade through flash floods occasioned by heavy rains, with Kenya Meteorological Department warning the rains will continue throughout the week.

Nairobi Hospital is set to fire more than 200 employees in a move aimed at cutting costs and clearing out staff implicated in a recent graft audit.

This is after the health facility received a nod from Court.

Justice Nzioki wa Makau dismissed a petition by Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels Educational Institutions Hospitals and Allied Workers (Kudheiha) saying it was premature since a letter by the management to the union dated March 10, was meant to open talks between the parties ahead of the restructuring plan.

The premier hospital wants to fire workers who either performed poorly or had been involved in unethical practices that were exposed in the recent forensic audit.

“Besides the staff affected by normal rationalisation, the hospital is disengaging with all staff who have perennial performance issues or were implicated in unethical practices during forensic audits,” the hospital said in a statement.

Kudheiha rushed to the Employment and Labour court to block the layoffs saying the move was targeting its members and the plan, which was disguised as restructuring, was done without following the mandatory procedures set out in the Employment Act.

But Justice Makau said since the letter was meant for dialogue, the proper solution in the case is to allow the union and the management to consult on the way forward.

Like other institutions in the country, Nairobi Hospital said it has been struggling financially amid swelling operational costs and lower revenues in the wake of an economic slowdown worsened by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

But in an affidavit, the secretary- general of the union Albert Njeru said operations at the hospital were going on as usual. He said the hospital has been experiencing shortage of beds as admissions for Covid-19 patients surged, in the last eight months. According to Mr Njeru, it was insincere of the hospital to say that business has been shrinking.

The hospital admitted writing the letter, which was copied to Cabinet Secretary for Labour, intending to reduce the number of staff. The court heard that there was nothing wrong to reduce staff because of economic downturn caused by Covid-19 pandemic.

A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future.” These priceless words which I hold in high esteem were uttered by the late South African president Nelson Mandela. Indeed a community’s virtue is judged by how it treats the weakest and most vulnerable among them. While there has been focus on other deserving groups in our community such as children, women and youth, the weakest of the lot, our elders have been neglected. This neglect is evidenced through the daily challenges they face accessing food and health care.

Prohibitive food prices reflect on the elders’ malnutrition and daily hunger. We have elders who attribute their lives to the fact that they cannot access food on a regular basis. Without jobs or any way of earning a living, elders are reduced to begging to survive. Our elders played their part in nation building and it is now our duty to support them in their old age. Our society cannot abandon its responsibility and duty to the elderly in our communities.

Secondly, healthcare which can be measured by affordability and accessibility has become practically unattainable for the elders who need it most. The exorbitant cost of basic health services has deterred the elderly from seeking to improve their health. Additionally, due to the total imbalance between various counties, some of the elders find themselves living in areas with gravely inadequate hospital facilities. Our elders suffer from plenty of underlying issues such as hypertension and diabetes that come with age. A simple flu equates to a death sentence. In contrast, other countries have provided medical cover, subsidized transport and food to the elderly. We in Kenya have experimented with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) for the elderly with very limited success. Health coverage to our elders is both essential and urgent.

Ahmed Rashid Jibril. Photo/ Courtesy.

With the eruption of a global pandemic, the situation for the elders has gotten worse. The few individuals with their kindly hands extended and upon whom the needy elders relied have suffered as their own income has been significantly curtailed. The entire nation is struggling and the elders bear the brunt of the punctured economy. In terms of healthcare, the seniors face a fearsome degree of mortality. In 2020, our organization, the Mama Ibado Charity saw a nine percent increase in mortality rates compared to 2019’s six percent. This is the highest drastic increase we’ve had in our ten years of service. The uncertainty of whether or not they died of coronavirus is attributed to inadequate testing in remote lands.
With the introduction of vaccines, there seems to be a glimmer of hope despite its limited availability. Recently, our volunteers in Isiolo interacted with our valued beneficiaries in order to gather their opinion. The elders unanimously expressed a skeptical, cynical and dismissive view, attributing the vaccine to guaranteed death. Such extreme and unenlightened opinions emanate from lack of awareness and misinformation. We need to educate and vaccinate our elders quickly before the danger of Covid-19 takes a deadly root in this vulnerable group.

Despite the state’s efforts to implement safety net programs and health insurance targeting the elderly, more needs to be done. The national government has a vested responsibility to take the lead in collapsing the steep hierarchical gap that places indigent seniors at rock bottom. There is a need to introduce sustainable programs such as various forms of subsidies and insurance for the elders. They can also provide tax concessions to individuals and organizations who actively contribute to charities that support the elderly. The county governments need to find within them the power to summon up alternative initiatives that will alleviate the pitiful conditions of the elders. In addition to governmental efforts, corporations and wealthy individuals need to form a meaningful alliance with the humanitarian purpose of restoring a dignified life to the elders. Companies can begin by dedicating a certain percentage of their revenue to charity while individuals can sacrifice a small amount of their income to impact destitute lives. Our actions need to be preceded by sincere intentions to support our elders regardless of their multiple identities, be it religion, ethnicity or tribe.

In essence, each one of us with capable stature and stable income has a responsibility to contribute to the wellbeing of elders. Confining them to a nursing home is not an option available to us. It is not only expensive beyond our means but also a disloyalty to our African values and an alien idea. This article is a national appeal to the Kenyan masses. Let us join hands in reigniting the fire of hope in the hearts of the men and women who sacrificed so much for us and are in dire need to be assisted. As the United Nations dictum goes, “leaving no one behind.” The second and third of the seventeen UN sustainable development goals are “zero hunger” and “good health and well-being”. Our collaborative efforts will prove to be a great antidote to their suffering and restore dignity to our elders and our society.

The writer is Ahmed Rashid Jibril, Mama Ibado Charity (MIC) founder, an independent, non-profit and non-governmental organization (NGO) formed from humble beginnings in 2011 with one objective in mind: Restoring Dignity and Hope to our seniors. Since its initial launch, Founder Ahmed Jibril and his team of dedicated MIC volunteers have grown the MIC organization from feeding 50 seniors in 2011 in Isiolo County, to 650 seniors in Isiolo and Kakamega Counties in less than a decade.

Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula has declared his final position on the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2020, famously known as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) referendum Bill.

The Bungoma Senator on Saturday May 8, 2021 through his official Twitter account defended his earlier position on the bill, saying that he was only a critic of the BBI referendum bill.

Wetang’ula on Tuesday made a surprise move, calling for radical amendments on the bill that has hence received a nod from the Members of National Assembly.

Wetang’ula who is a principal in the One Kenya Alliance said to be enjoying the blessings of President Uhuru Kenyatta, said the bill contains several provisions that will erode the gains the country has made.

Speaking during the debate on the Bill in the senate chambers on Tuesday, Wetangula said the provisions are a clawback and should be changed by parliament to realign them to the Constitution.

The senator took issue with the second schedule of the Bill that creates 70 constituencies, creation of the Judiciary Ombudsam, scrapping of 47 woman rep positions in the National Assembly and creation of the Youth Commission.

“I don’t understand why we are creating a Youth Commission. We have so many laws that govern our youth. Kenyans must learn to understand that youth is neither a disadvantage nor a disability. It is a transit state in human life,” he said.

The vocal lawmaker, a lawyer by profession, questioned the constitutionality, rationale and criteria for the creation and allocation of 70 constituencies to some 47 counties.

However, he has defended his position saying that he was only pointing out some of the shortcomings in the BBI bill.

He went ahead to declare his final position on the bill’s vote, saying that he will vote yes for the bill when it will be tabled in the senate.

“It does appear to me that many don’t understand the difference between a critic on a bill and opposing a bill. Pointing out shortcomings in a bill like I did on the BBI bill is a legislator’s duty. I will vote YES for the bill. It’s my and FK party position!” he said.

Wetang’ula’s statement did not, however, go well with a section of Kenyans on Twitter, who have condemned him for pointing out the shortcomings in the BBI referendum bill, but still going ahead to vote YES.

The seeming angry KOT criticized Wetang’ula for endorsing the BBI referendum bill with all the shortcomings he had pointed out.

Here are some of the KOT’s reactions.

The holy month kicked off amid Covid-19 containment measures instituted that had been by the government in five counties, locking down Kiambu, Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos and Nakuru.

Ramadan is a month of fasting and socialization as well as helping the needy, however, with the pandemic which has been claiming lives of many in the country with containment measures enforced, this meant a change of activities that have existed since time immemorial.

India is now feeble ,with it’s population reducing each day. The variant that hit them is furiously snatching over 3600 Indians in a single day taking india to a tally of over 18 million infections. The number of deaths recorded on Thursday was the largest since the pandemic started.

We are overwhelmed” leaders expressed tension over the situation explaining that the morgues are overwhelmed with bodies. Grave diggers are noted to work on a 24/7 schedule as the numbers increase beyond the estimated numbers.

Notable hotels and railway couches in the country have been momentarily turned into care facilities in efforts to manage the big number.

Experts and researchers are afraid that the real number of deaths and infections is more than what they report ,a good reason for other countries to get alarmed and cautious.

Doctors and nurses explained that they don’t take breaks. “We are totally filled”.

Patients gasping for oxygen ,are strewn in trolleys between the filled beds as others succumb to the virus at the htospitals foyer.

India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi is facing squirms for permitting political rallies and religious festivals amid the seriousness of the pandemic.

The deadly variant has been reported in Uganda and Romania. No case has been confirmed in kenya yet.

India is amongst the biggest producers of vaccines though it’s depending on aid from other nations to attend to the 800 million needed. The army has showed efforts in the supply of oxygen to the hospitals.

The african union has summoned other african nations to tighten their measures as the variant is furious. On May 8 the organization will meet its members to address the issue.

Even with the shocking number of deaths in india , it still comes third in number of infections after Brazil and united States .

Thousands of muslim Faithfuls in Isiolo County are set to benefit from Mama Ibado Charity food relief programme during this holy month of ramadan.

The Charitable organization has already begun a four-day relief food donation targeting over 1,000 needy Muslim households in Isiolo County.

According to the organization, the programme is aimed at cushioning the faithfuls from impact of hunger as they observe the Holy month of Ramadan.

In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the organisation said it will be distributing relief food supplies to between 200-300 people daily over the week in strict compliance to COVID-19 protocols.

The main beneficiaries will be Muslim households from Bulapesa, Shambani, Kambi Odha, Kambi ya juu, Tuluroba and Kiwanjani villages of Isiolo County.

Leyla Mohamed, a Field Officer at Mama Ibado Charity noted that the relief food donation is targeting the most vulnerable members of the society.

“Lives of Muslims from poor backgrounds during the current holy month of Ramadan had been made even harder by the adverse effects of COVID-19 that has led to closure of businesses and the subsequent loss of jobs,” said Mohamed.

Isiolo Central location Chief Abdi Dida who graced the food distribution exercise said that the hunger situation for most households in the location that covers Isiolo town has reached alarming levels.

Mr. Dida lauded the charitable organization for the generous move to cushion vulnerable Kenyans especially during this time when Muslims are observing the holy month of Ramadhan.

“Other organizations and even individuals who have plenty should emulate the gesture shown by Mama Ibado Charity and share with the less privileged members of the community,” he said.

The beneficiaries received a variety of food stuffs including maize and wheat flour, rice, pasta, sugar, tea leaves, salt and cooking oil. They lauded the move by the charitable foundation to cushion them during the current hard times.

Halima Nguzo, a resident of Bulapesa area said that the food received was enough to feed her household for the remainder of the holy month of Ramadan.

Residents of Isiolo also appealed to the government and other organizations to also consider emulating the Mama Ibado Charity to ensure that more vulnerable Kenyans benefit from similar relief food donation exercises.

Waking up to a solitude will could not have been their expected breakfast but they did , collision with a grief blasting paper, possibly with ramshackle disfigured alphabets but the immensity of the message remaining clear. Seems implausible.

The night of 22nd a family in Sigenya ,Migori county woke up to find one of their members disappeared leaving behind a scribbled paper on how her property should be shared.

40 years old Jane Auma on the night of 22nd wrote in her will that the family members should thereafter look for her in a nearby sorghum plantation.

The area chief explained that the possible reason behind the disappearance is yet to be identified though people stated that they had wrangles with the husband.

Adrift in the disappearance hysteria ,the family members are worried on whether their member is alive or sought to ending her life.

Basically, a will is a dessert for a possible inexistence hence the looming fear is vital.

Winning after what was considered tight might be a huge relief from the uncertain pressure of failure and looking forward to getting better pay for your produce too is another relief . Symmetrically are two people with alluring expectations, one hoping to be relieved off the burden of meager earnings and the other blasting cheerfulness to the relief at hand. All brought together by the squirms of this verdant; tea.

Speaking to daily trends yesterday, the newly elected director for mitheru tea zone confidently narrated his taut reforms that he envisions implementing to bring the change the restive famers yearn.

“Am looking forward to implementing the government policies on bettering the state of sales and get determined to work very close with the farmers in all matters,” said the director. He continued to explain the likelihood of ending the green fedha association which he feels is a burden to the farmers who after getting the loans find it hard paying back .He explained that this will create a tranquil environment for the farmers to surf on as they won’t have their money deducted to repay the loans.

Jackson Ireri Abidan, expressed his candid thoughts that he will look into the issue where farmers have to remain patient and keep bills pending to await their cumulative payment. It might happen that farmers will be able to get their money at any time unlike in the past where they would wait for the cumulative payment at the end of the month or annually.

We will work openly and remain transparent on many issues and bring the farmer closer to us for the farmers own good; the director ezolained that the cartels who were there before had their own personal companies and they would buy the tea at their own prices and even make direct sales. The director tells daily trends that this was the main reason as to why farmers ended up getting low pay.

The resolves were utterly enticing and the gravid calmness raises hope on a better zone.

Farmers are optimistic that they might bump on the gravid change they have been running after but will they?

Bluebird Aviation’s private charter flights seem to be on a high demand.

This is evident following a slight rise in demand for the regional airline’s private charter flights since the outbreak of COVID-19.

The Covid-19 outbreak led to limited availability of commercial flights and health risks concerns.

According to Bluebird Aviation’s General Manager Captain Hussein Mohammed, while the usual private charterers have maintained their demand albeit at a reduced frequency, some airlines have witnessed additional demand for private charters from new clientele.

Through a press release sent to newsrooms, Captain Hussein Mohammed said travellers have been hesitant to utilize commercial flights , which has led to increased enquires .

“Whether its health risk concerns or just getting where you need to be, people and companies that have the means to fly privately, but had previously shunned it, are now looking at this alternative,” said Captain Mohammed.

Amid the rapid spread of the infectious disease and the declaration of a state of emergency in many countries, airlines have had to suspend passenger flights and cut schedules significantly, leaving most airlines with capacities below 50 per cent.

Regional airlines were also hit hard following president Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive to lock five counties .

The five counties that were termed as disease infected zones are Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Nakuru.

The air charter aviation sub-sector has however, proven its ability to adjust in the past and in the current situation and supports the fight against Covid-19 with what it does best: transporting people and goods to where they are needed.

Captain Mohamed also noted that the Charter flights have helped in medical evacuation, air lifting of medical equipment and staff, carriage of vaccines, repatriation of travellers and contributed to maintaining supply chains during the Covid-19 crisis.

Research has found out that the headrest on a passenger seat has the most filth. It has been concluded that nearly half of the surfaces swabbed on airline flights contained levels of bacteria and yeast that could put a person at risk of infection.

“If youre a person who may have flown privately a few times, or not at all, and never justified the time savings, privacy, efficiency, and pandemic exposure, the time is now to reconsider your travel plans,” said Captain Mohammed.
