Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale

The government has withdrawn the security detail of Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale.

Taking to his official Facebook account on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, Khalwale said his security detail was withdrawn without any explanation.

“My security details have been pulled without any warning or explanation,” Khalwale wrote.

This comes on the eve of the Thursday, November 27, 2025, by-elections that will be happening across the country, in which the Malava constituency will be taking part.

Khalwale has been vocal in campaigning for Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) candidate Seth Panyako, against the ruling UDA party’s David Ndakwa.

Natembeya’s Security Withdrawn

Withdrawal of Khalwale’s security comes hours after Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya revealed that all his security detail was withdrawn in the dead of night, leaving the outspoken county boss exposed and sparking immediate unrest among his supporters.

Natembeya confirmed on Wednesday morning that police officers attached to him, including his personal bodyguards and those guarding his Kitale residence, were recalled without warning.

In a strongly worded statement, the governor condemned the operation, terming it a deliberate act of intimidation orchestrated through state machinery.

“All the security officers attached to me were recalled last night, and I was forced to put my own safety measures in place,” Natembeya said.
“Security for me is not an offer from the government or anyone—it is a constitutional right.”

The governor accused elements within the police service of weaponising law enforcement for political ends, insisting he would not bow to pressure or threats.

“Let whoever did that know that I will not be intimidated or cowed into giving up on my stand,” he said.

Security Withdrawal Comes Amid Threats on His Life

The dramatic recall comes barely weeks after Natembeya survived multiple security scares on the campaign trail.

During by-election campaigns in Malava and Bungoma, gunshots rang out at his Kabuchai rally, forcing his bodyguards to whisk him away to safety. The governor says these incidents are proof that his life is under active threat, making the sudden withdrawal even more alarming.

County Deploys Its Own Guards

In an emergency response, Trans Nzoia County quickly deployed enforcement officers to guard Natembeya and reinforce security at his home as investigations unfold.

Despite the tension, the governor says he will continue with his official duties uninterrupted.

“The Inspector General must come out and explain why the security officers were withdrawn,” he said.

George Natembeya's security withdrawn

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is crying foul after all his security detail was withdrawn in the dead of night, leaving the outspoken county boss exposed and sparking immediate unrest among his supporters.

Natembeya confirmed on Wednesday morning that police officers attached to him—including his personal bodyguards and those guarding his Kitale residence—were recalled without warning.

Natembeya Speaks Out

News of the withdrawal triggered outrage among Natembeya’s supporters, some accusing the national government of silencing vocal leaders who refuse to “toe the political line.”

As pressure mounts, the country now watches to see whether the National Police Service or the Interior Ministry will break their silence.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya during one of his recent rallies

Chaos broke out in Chwele/Kabuchai ward, Bungoma County, on Saturday, November 22, 2025, after Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya came under attack when gunshots were fired during a campaign rally.

In a video seen by Daily Trends, which is doing rounds on social media, Natembeya had been addressing residents from the rooftop of his vehicle while campaigning for independent candidate Eric Wekesa in the upcoming Chwele/Kabuchai ward by-election when the rally was violently disrupted.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of armed goons linked to a rival Ford Kenya faction stormed the rally and opened fire, sending residents fleeing for safety.

The sudden gunfire forced Natembeya’s security detail to react swiftly, grabbing the governor and pulling him back into his vehicle through the sunroof before speeding him away from the scene. Terrified locals ran in all directions as the gunshots rang out.

No casualties were immediately reported, but sources described the attack as a deliberate attempt to intimidate Natembeya and disrupt his presence in the hotly contested by-election.

Although he managed to escape, his vehicles were vandalised by the goons.

Former Health CS Susan Nakhumicha

Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has formally declared her intention to run for Trans Nzoia Governor in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for a high-stakes political contest against incumbent Governor George Natembeya.

Speaking on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at a gathering in Cherengany, Nakhumicha said her family and supporters had given her a new political direction—one that moves her beyond the Woman Representative seat she previously held.

“Nachukua nafasi hii kushukuru sana hiyo mwelekeo mpya ambao mmenipa, yakwamba kuanzia leo nikitembea nitembee na nguvu mpya ya kusema mimi sio tu wa Cherengany ward, mimi sasa naenda kuwa kiongozi katika Trans Nzoia County,” she said.

In a fiery speech, Nakhumicha made it clear she would not seek the Woman Representative position again.

“Katiba ya Kenya inaruhusu mkenya yeyote, wa jinsia yoyote, kuwa katika nafasi ya uongozi. Kwa hivo leo wameniondoa kwenye kiti cha wamama… nataka kuwahakikishia yakwamba mimi ikifika 2027 sitatafuta kiti cha wamama,” she declared.

Takes Aim at Natembeya

Nakhumicha’s announcement signals her direct challenge to Governor Natembeya, who is expected to seek a second term. Her entry is projected to dramatically shake up Trans Nzoia politics, especially given her national profile and previous high-ranking role in the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Ikifika 2027, familia imenipa mwelekeo mpya na huo ndio nitafuata,” she added, strongly hinting that she intends to reclaim political ground after being dropped from Cabinet in a reshuffle earlier this year.

Chris Wamalwa Also Enters the Race

Nakhumicha is not the only heavyweight angling for the governorship. Former Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa also declared his bid on the same day, marking the first time both well-known politicians have openly confirmed their intention to face Natembeya at the ballot.

Wamalwa, a seasoned politician with deep grassroots networks, is expected to split votes in what is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive gubernatorial races ahead of 2027.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has sparked political speculation after meeting Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

Their meeting comes amid reports of widening cracks within the United Opposition led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a statement shared on his official social media pages, Matiang’i said the meeting was to commiserate with Munya following the death of his grandmother, Mama Mwakairu Rukunga, fondly known as Bamung’o.

“This morning, Trans Nzoia Governor H.E. George Natembeya and I met with former Cabinet Secretary Hon. Peter Munya to commiserate with him following the passing of his beloved grandmother, Mama Mwakairu Rukunga (Bamung’o),” Matiang’i stated.

While the meeting was presented as a condolence visit, political observers have noted that it comes at a time when internal tensions are reportedly emerging within the opposition coalition, with some leaders accusing others of disloyalty and covert political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general election.

Sources close to the Matiang’i and Natembeya camps suggest the two leaders have been in regular contact, with discussions revolving around building a reform-driven coalition that appeals to Kenya’s youth and working class—a move some see as a subtle attempt to reposition ahead of 2027.

Matiang’i, who has maintained a relatively low political profile since leaving government in 2022, has recently re-emerged in the national discourse as he popularises his presidential ambitions.

His public appearances with Natembeya, a vocal critic of President William Ruto, have amplified talk of a potential political partnership.

Governor Natembeya, a rising figure in Western Kenya politics, has also been viewed as a possible running mate for any opposition realignment that could challenge both the Kenya Kwanza administration and the increasingly fragile Kalonzo-Gachagua alliance.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has publicly clashed with President William Ruto’s long-time aide, Farouk Kibet, over development in Western Kenya.

Natembeya, who has been a strong critic of Ruto’s administration, told Farouk to face him if he has any misgivings about his leadership.

“Do not think that because you are close to the President, you can lecture us. I do not fear you; come and face me. Do not speak from the periphery. It is as simple as that,” the governor told a public meeting over the weekend.

Natembeya told Kenyans to respect those in leadership positions but not to fear them.

“I was taught by my mother to respect people and leaders, for that matter. And I respect President Wiliam Ruto, but I do not fear him because he is also a human being,” he stated.

“When we start fearing the leadership, we are bringing dictatorship to our country.”

The governor emphasised that the country belongs to all Kenyans and not a group of people.

“The President eats ugali and sour milk just like me, he sleeps just like me, he has bad and good dreams just like me, and he was born by a woman just like me. Why the should we fear each other yet Kenya belongs to all of us,” he posed.

Speaking in Malava in Kakamega County earlier, Farouk accused Natembeya of being a stumbling block to development in Western Kenya.

“I heard a complaint, and I want to ask you something. Natembeya is saying I should not visit Malava; is that possible?” he said.

Natembeya has strongly criticised Ruto’s recent tour of Western Kenya, arguing that the region has been neglected in terms of development.

Natembeya further called out Ruto’s handlers, accusing them of misleading the president on the needs and priorities of the people of Western Kenya.

He urged Ruto to reconsider his close circle of advisors, arguing that they deceive him rather than relay the true needs of the people on the ground.

Natembeya expressed disappointment over Western Kenya’s lack of development and emphasised that the region deserves equal infrastructure projects like other parts of the country.

He went ahead to ask those who were competing for the position but did not merit to stay put saying that there is more within the executive and the whole government assuring them that if he takes over the county government, they will be considered for other positions.

Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama who was also present backed Lusaka’s decision on settling on a woman as his running mate saying that he has demonstrated equity by making it clear that women are also good managers and able to handle huge leadership positions.

“You have broken the gist and we appreciate the fact that you have practiced inclusivity and making sure that the women are included and that they are fit for leadership positions and that our women are equal to the task to manage the people of Bungoma,”he said.

Tranzoia County hopeful and former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya on Friday May 13, 2022 also picked a female running mate.

Natembeya unveiled Mrs. Philemona Bineah Kapkor as his choice for deputy governor at an event held at Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) headquarters located at Chui House, Nairobi.

Philomena is a banker and Natembeya believes her experience and expertise will help the Tans Nzoia County grow should he clinch the county’s topmost seat.

Justina Wamae on Monday May 16, 2022 presented her papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as running mate to Roots Party Presidential aspirant George Wajackoyah.

Wamae was accompanied by Adam ‘otto’ Kadernani the Roots Party Secretary General and party leader Wajackoyah.

Presidential hopeful Wajackoyah unveils running mate

In February, Wajackoyah officially launched his State House bid with a promise to legalize bhang and suspend the constitution within the first six months.

Trans Nzoia County Governor hopeful George Natembeya has unveiled his choice for deputy ahead of the Monday May 16, 2022 deadline set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner on Friday unveiled Mrs.

Natembeya’s main opponent is Kiminini Member of Parliament Chris Wamalwa who is vying on a Ford Kenya ticket.

Migori gubernatorial candidate John Pesa unveiled veteran journalist Matiko Bohoko as his running mate.

Kisii gubernatorial candidate Sam Ongeri unveiled Engineer Josiah Maaga as his ticket-mate.

Busia gubernatorial hopeful Moses settled on Tom Ipomai as his running mate.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa who is the DAP-K party patron used the event’s opportunity to tell ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetangula that the power-sharing deal they signed with DP William Ruto is a scam.

Image

Both Mudavadi and Wetangula have been promised 30 per cent of the government should Ruto win the August 9 presidential election.

However, the promise comes with a rider that the two politicians must deliver at least 70 per cent of the Western Kenya votes. That is around 1.8 million votes.

Should they succeed in that quest, and Ruto wins the presidency, then Mudavadi will be appointed the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Wetangula the Speaker of the National Assembly.

Former Rift Valley Regional Coordinator George Natembeya claimed that bandits wreaking havoc in Laikipia are using sophisticated weapons and most people thought it was a joke.

But on October 12, security officers killed an armed bandit in Longowean, Samburu West and recovered an M16 rifle that had 25 rounds of ammunition. The bandit was among a gang that had attacked the area and driven away 27 heads of cattle.

Police arrested Dakitari Lokombayo and presented him at Maralal court last week Tuesday and is still being held as the police were given two weeks to conclude investigations.

Earlier on, Natembeya said that while the police are using ordinary AK-47 and G3 rifles, he wondered where the bandits got the M16 and other military weapons.

Intelligence reports indicate that they get the sophisticated weapons and food from their leaders in support of Moranism.

According to Nation, Ethiopian rebels known as Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) anf others are the main sources of such guns.

They are then smuggled to the country through porous boarders. The DCI have commenced their investigations into this.

A senior officer at DCI said the assault rifle recovered from the arrested bandit had a flag of a neighboring country and was manufactured in the US.

Gun laws are strict in Kenya. For one to acquire, it requires a comprehensive background check and interviews. However, pastoralist communities who rarely have government security get the guns from black market.

These rifles are acquired from leaders who support cattle rustling. They offer them at a price between Ksh 5000 and 20,000 or two cows depending on the type of gun.

Kenya easily gets the guns as it is surrounded by countries in conflict such as the South Sudan where local communities sell them for food.

Others are Somalia, Ethiopia and Uganda. The Deputy Director of the National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Mr. Charles Owino said the government is not giving up on the war on illegal firearms.

He added that East African countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and the 15 countries who are members of the Nairobi Protocol for the prevention, control and reduction of small arms and light weapons in the Great Lakes region and the horn of Africa to fight against the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region.

A security expert, Mr. Richard Otieno said it’s a family of military rifles adapted from the ArmaLite AR-15 rifle for the US army.

The original M-16 rifle was 5.56mm×45mm assault rifle that can fire 40-60 rounds per minute.

In 1964, M-16 entered the US military service and in the subsequent year, it was deployed for use in jungle warfare during Vietnam war.

It has been widely adopted by armed forces around the world. The worldwide production of M-16 rifles is approximately eight million of the 5.56 mm caliber.

In 2016, a report indicates that there are over 600,000 illegal firearms among the pastoralist communities in Kenya and up to 700,000 illicit arms countrywide .

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya has warned newly recruited Assistant County Commissioners (ACCs) against having sexual relations with their juniors and civilians.

Natembeya said this while addressing over 200 ACCs who are fresh graduates to ensure they maintain a positive image in their profession.

He told them to conduct their social life in the right way,”If you go sleeping around with people in the villages, you will be in trouble individually and bring shame to the government,” he said.

This warning comes barely a week after police rescued a chief in Londiani from the wrath of an irate mob after he was caught in the act with a married woman.

“If you are an ACC and you sleep with a chief, it is equal to elevating that chief to your level. They will have reduced you to the level of a chief,” he stated.

“Such a chief will not respect his equals and those in ranks between you and them. The y will have the audacity to insubordinate their immediate seniors boasting that they share a bed with an ACC,” said Natembeya.

The ACCs will get several privileges and among them are government vehicles. He warned them of using the cars for their personal gains. “Some of the drivers are very handsome. Don’t be tempted to go for drinks with them, then you end up sleeping together,” he added.

He said that any sexual intimacy with government officers will be revealed and asked them to be careful.

“For civilians, it will be a great achievement. They will run around the villages telling everyone every detail of what you did together. But this won’t be the case with government officials.” said Natembeya.

He told the ACCs to be careful not to lose themselves in the comfort of government facilities and warned them against any corrupt dealings. “Sometimes, you will take a bullet for the government before senior goverrnment officers come to make subsequent responses. Do not be part of a corrupt system if you find any.”

He further advised,”You have landed a well-paying job while you are very young. Don’t forget about your life. Invest for your future. Learn to plan for your future early.”
