Business mogul-cum politician Suleiman Shahbal has officially ditched President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Jubilee party for Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Through a statement dated July 6, 2021, the former Mombasa County gubernatorial aspirant said that he had officially resigned as a member of the ruling party following his announcement to join the Orange party.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the Jubilee Party leadership for the support offered to me throughout my membership,” Shahbal said.

He further noted that he was going to put his efforts in ensuring the merger between Jubilee and ODM parties is realised.

His move comes less than a decade since he quit the party, after losing the ODM nominations to Governor Hassan Joho in 2013.

Shahbal shocked his supporters when he defected to UDF from ODM, and then to Wiper Party, all in a matter of weeks.

He moved to Wiper on January 19, 2013, after three of his agents were allegedly roughed up by ODM supporters at the height of the contest for the orange party’s nomination.

Last month, Shahbal, who was addressing the Mombasa Luo Focus Group, expressed his interest in succeeding Governor Joho whose second term is ending in the next 13 months.

He rallied his support behind ODM leader Raila Odinga urging his audience at the forum to consider Raila’s presidential bid in 2022.

The businessman also pushed for unity between Raila and Kalonzo, adding that he would be happy if he saw the duo at the helm of the country’s leadership.

Raila on Saturday resisted pressure from party supporters to endorse Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir for the Mombasa governorship.

Both Nassir and Shahbal have declared interest in suceeding Joho. They are both angling for Raila’s blessings as they seek to run on the ODM party ticket.

Nassir is banking on his loyalty to the party to receive Raila’s blessings while Shahbal is hoping his friendship with the former Prime Minister and his financial muscle will endear him to the ODM leadership.

Mombasa’s governor Ali Hassan Joho caught the attention of curious Kenyans after photos of him seemingly in a reduced weight than other days.

Besides being popular as a politician, Joho is well known to be a “fashion-killer”.

He has continuously displayed his unquenchable taste of fashion ranging from clothes, shoes and even the style of hair-cut.

The soft spoken governor apart from working in his office also works on his body and the results have been outstanding. He has left ladies drooling over his looks.

Various sites have described him as trendy and the most awoke politician in these times.

Joho has proven that even with older age, and his stomach which some said makes him look ” oldie”, one can still over look with the keen interest of an agent in a polling station, their sense of fashion.

What to wear and what to avoid, diet and physical fitness. Joho has gone a bit higher by even making sure that he wears the most expensive outfits which he displays in his Instagram account.

All these portray that Joho has been enjoying his life without much issues. However, what caught Kenyans unaware sending spasms of worry in their already shaken souls brought by the dilemma of BBI, is Joho’s sudden loss of weight.

In the photos shared online, Joho seems to have experienced a dramatic loss of weight which made inquisitive Kenyans ask questions whether the self-proclaimed sultan is well.

Here are some of the comments from concerned Kenyans:
@Clement Richu Malikh, “He looks dilapilated…hope all is well.”

@Gilbert Tanui, “The Governor has lost much weight he as to reduce zoezi”

@Julie Wanna, “Kariuki Mwangi amekonda sana😳😳

Mombasa governor Hassan Joho has reportedly renewed his war against Coast elected leaders.

According to a local daily, Joho is targeting leaders who are perceived to be supportive of Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 Presidential bid.

Currently, Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya is under siege from hostile MCAs suspected to be under instructions of Joho through county speaker Sammy Ruwa.

Ruwa has been a longtime Joho sidekick and has also acted as his legal adviser in the past. He has been fronted for governor seat twice but rejected. He is speaker for a second term.

Towards the end of Mvurya’s first term, he has been a Ruto man. He has no time for Joho, insisting Kwale is not an extension of Mombasa county.

In the last general elections, Joho had vowed to ensure Mvurya was defeated at the ballot. But this was never to be after the Mombasa governor fell out with Chirau Mwakwere who was a sure bet against Mvurya on the then popular ODM ticket.

After Mwakwere bolted out of ODM to Wiper, Joho turned to little known Issa Chipera as party candidate. Chipera literally became minced meat for Mvurya who easily beat him and made a comeback on a Jubilee ticket.

Mvurya is grooming his deputy Fatuma Achani to succeed him in the next general election but observers say this is a tall order.

Joho on the other hand is reportedly pushing Crop Development PS Hamad Boga for the Kwale seat against Mvurya’s candidate and Mwakwere.

Another Ruto man on Joho’s radar is Kaloleni MP Paul Katana. Recently, the legislator was discharged as a member of the parliamentary investment committee in actions said to have the Mombasa governor’s hand.

Ironically, Katana was Joho’s PA when he served as Kisauni MP. But it appears other than fighting Katana for aligning himself with Ruto, he never wanted him to be MP in the first place.

In the 2013 general election when Katana first contested and lost to little known Gunga Mwinga, there were allegations that ODM insiders had rigged him out.

Currently, Joho is said to be financing the political activities of Mwinga to undermine Katana in the constituency. Katana has said severally that his cooperation with Ruto is because of the handshake between Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“I’m a loyal member of ODM with full respect to my party leader. I also support the handshake and that is why I have been working with DP Ruto to further development in my constituency,” the legislator was quoted as saying.

He has also said his cooperation with Ruto is not for selfish reasons but for the benefit of his constituents. He says the DP has presided over high profile funds drives towards public projects in his constituency.

The MP says some of the people fighting him have never assisted Kaloleni to move forward but wants leaders who can bootlick them.

Mohammed Ali of Nyali constituency and a close ally of the DP is another one whom Joho is scheming against. He is pushing his cousin Said Abdalla aka Saido against the Jicho Pevu.

Jicho Pevu’s recent rising political profile after he filed a motion to impeach transport CS James Macharia over chaos at Mombasa port has alarmed the Joho camp. In spite of the rejection of the motion by Speaker Justin Muturi, Ali has become a hero in Mombasa.

Last week, pro-Joho Mombasa MPs led by Mvita’s Abdulswamad Nassir were doing damage control. They toured the port and pleaded with the KPA management to put out a notice affirming that usage of SGR for containers upcountry was optional.

This was meant to cool the heat against them after residents began collecting signatures to recall them for failing to support Jicho Pevu motion.

Another Joho political foe Aisha Jumwa of Malindi constituency is politically wounded and the Mombasa governor no longer cares what she does or says. The Malindi MP’s self-inflicted woes have dimmed her 2022 Kilifi governor bid.

It will be a major boost to the existing Day Care Chemotherapy Center. The project is a partnership between Mombasa County government and the National Government.

Joho has in the recent past won the hearts of many in his spirited efforts to ensure that Mombasa residents get the best out of healthcare.

After the first case of Covid-19 was reported in Kenya on March 13, Joho was among the first to call for a total lockdown to slow the spread of the virus.

He argued that China, where the virus was first reported in December last year, contained it through a lockdown of Wuhan city, the epicentre of coronavirus.

But he also reasoned that because a lockdown has socio-economic implications it should only be enforced after putting in place mitigation measures to cushion the poor who live on a daily wage.

Three hotlines were established to report disease occurrence. He also launched food collection centres across the county.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho has updated Kenyans on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga’s health condition after he underwent a minor surgery in United Arab Emirates.

Joho through a video posted on his official twitter handle on Friday June 26, 2020 revealed that he had spoken to Raila who is recuperating in a German Hospital in Dubai.

The ODM Deputy party leader noted that Raila was fairing on well, and that he well soon jet back into the country.

He urged Kenyans to continue praying for him, reminding them that leaders, like any other person are humans, and they can fall sick and seek treatment.

Joho further pointed out that Raila is human and faces the same challenges human being face in life.

“He has undergone a procedure but let us not forget even our leaders are still human beings and sometimes have to be tested, sometimes they have to be sick and treated, sometime they have to deal with issues that every human being goes through but the best we could do is pray for them,” said Joho.

Raila’s brother and family spokesperson Dr Oburu Oginga, told a local daily that the former prime minister left the country on Sunday for the United Arab Emirates.

“Jakom (Raila) is out of the country for a minor surgical operation on his back. It is not a serious health issue, but just a minor one. So, he’s okay,” Oburu said.

Oburu further revealed that Raila, 75, was admitted to a German hospital in Dubai.

Without disclosing the name of the facility, Oburu said: “The Germans have a good hospital facility in the Arabian country where he’s being monitored.”

He dismissed social media reports that Raila had gone to China for treatment.

“He’s not in China. The last time he was there, I think, was in November last year before the coronavirus pandemic. Right now, if you want to go there, you must be ready for a 14-day military quarantine. That’s not tenable, so there is no way he could have gone there,” he said.

Mombasa County Governor Hassan Ali Joho has come up with interventions to save Mombasa Old Town residents from adverse effects of a 15-day lockdown.

The government on Wednesday May 6, the government ordered for cessation of movement in and out of Mombasa Old Town and Eastleigh area in Nairobi, as the Covid-19 cases in the mentioned areas continued to go up.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced the containment order as part of new measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The CS ordered all markets and eateries within the area closed starting Wednesday at 7pm. Mr Kagwe made the announcement after indicating that two more people had died in Mombasa bringing the total number of fatalities to 26.

Nyali constituency MP Mohamed Ali has clashed with governor Hassan Ali Joho over the mass testing for Covid-19 that kicked off in Mombasa on Saturday May 2, 2020.

A section of the residents of Mombasa boycotted the exercise, forcing governor Joho to lose temper on them.

Joho scolded the residents of Old Town for what he termed as evading coronavirus tests.

The furious governor expressed his disappointment that residents failed to avail themselves for the mass testing which the county had rolled to ascertain the spread of the deadly virus.

He further stated that once the residents will once more not avail themselves for the testing, they will be locked up in their houses.

Responding to Joho’s outburst on the Saturday night, the vocal journalist-turned politician opposed Joho’s words pointing out that it was not wise for the governor to ‘threaten’ the residents.

He went on to state that as coastal leaders, they ought to come up with a strategy to support the residents. Some of which he mentioned were; allowing health professionals to do their work and also giving scientists humble time to investigate the condition and offer advisory measures.

He further disclosed that most of the residents are reluctant in going for the tests since once confirmed positive, they are informed that quarantine and treatment costs are at their own costs.

He called off the governor for setting aside Ksh 700 Million shillings for fighting the pandemic.

He questioned the move on when parliament discussed such amounts and also went on to ask if the money is there, why are the residents forced to pay for the services.

He also opposed Joho’s idea on calling for a lock down in the county due to increase in number of the confirmed positive cases

Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho is in a big trouble.

The county chief on Tuesday April 28 received a blow after the Mombasa High Court dismissed his application asking to be spared a jail sentence for demolishing a multi-million property in Changamwe.

In a case that was heard via a video link, Justice Sila Munyao said records in court proved the governor was aware of the injunctive court orders barring the demolition of property belonging to Mombasa tycoon Ashok Doshi.

Munyao ruled Joho was well represented by his lawyers and had been served with a show cause notice in a letter dated Friday, May 17, 2019.

Joho had filed an application seeking to have Justice Munyao suspend his order dated Wednesday, February 12, 2020, sentencing him to six months in jail  after he found him guilty of contempt of court.

Last month, Munyao suspended Joho’s sentencing to allow him submit the application stopping his sentencing.

The judge had found Joho guilty of disobeying Lady Justice Ann Omollo’s orders dated Tuesday, March 6, 2019, stopping the county government of Mombasa from interfering with the said suit through a consent written by him and county government lawyers.

The governor was scheduled to appear before court to mitigate before his sentencing.

Through his lawyer Ali Mohamed, governor Joho argued the application dated Friday, May 17, 2019 was never personally served upon him, and as such, he was a stranger to the proceedings.

Joho said he only got to know he had been held in contempt of court through the mainstream and social media.

He contended he had never disobeyed a court order, and that as a matter of principle, he fully respects the sanctity of the rule of law and all court orders.

Doshi’s lawyer Willis Oluga however, said personal service was not mandatory in such an application and the need for personal service was raised and dismissed in an earlier ruling by Justice Munyao on Wednesday, February 12.

Oluga said one Gordon Odhiambo personally served the ODM deputy party leader with the application dated Friday, May 17,2019.

Munyao dismissed the argument the application dated Friday, May 17, 2019 was defective as it failed to follow the procedure laid down in the judicature act.

In his ruling, the Judge said the acts of disobedience were attributed to the governor as the chief executive of the county.

The judge said Joho actively participated in the application through the county attorney.

Flamboyant City lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has claimed that Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho might be the Kenya’s next President.

The senior counsel who has been representing Deputy President William Ruto in a case involving Weston Hotel says that Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has an excellent chance if Joho is made their Presidential candidate for 2022.

Through a Sunday morning tweet, the lawyer claimed that leaders are born during crisis.

He argued that the the ODM party leader has gone completely awol at this time of Covid-19 pandemic. He says that Governor Joho is the only ODM politician who has been visible and effective at the time of coronavirus pandemic.

“Leaders are BORN during crisis and at a time when Hon Raila has gone COMPLETELY AWOL Governor @HassanAliJoho has been the only VISIBLE/EFFECTIVE ODM politician during the Coronavirus crisis. ODM has excellent chance if Joho is ODM’s Presidential candidate for 2022,” he tweeted.

Joho has taken the lead in the fight against Covid-19 in a way that has caught many by surprise. He has won praise for his style of leadership in a time of crisis, which is arguably better than that of his compatriots in the Council of Governors.

The county has even threatened to prosecute residents who fail to comply with directives.

Joho, who has set aside a Sh200 million war chest against the coronavirus from the county’s kitty, has been pulling different players together.

He has even acquired the most unlikely unofficial assistant, hitherto political rival Suleiman Shahbal, who has taken the lead role among the business community.

Shahbal’s idea of a disinfecting booth at the Likoni ferry crossing, where ferry users can be disinfected en masse, was quickly taken up by his new-found partner in crisis.

Activist Boniface Mwangi has been blasted by Kenyans on Twitter for dragging the names of ODM party leader Raila Odinga and Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho into Mombasa economic crisis.

Mwangi who was speaking during demonstrations organised by Haki Africa Human Rights group on Monday said that Raila and Joho are to blame for the crisis that has come as a result of SGR.

The activist cited that Mombasa residents voted for Raila and Joho heavily in 2017 but the two have remained mum on the crisis that is threatening to kill the economy of the region.

Mombasa residents have been demonstrating to protest against government’s move to let cargo from the coast be transported via SGR line, killing the economy of road transporters.

However, Kenyans have turned against Mwangi, accusing him of being petty. They argue that neither Joho nor Raila operate the SGR, nor are they in the national government.

They argue that Mwangi should blame the national government and leave Raila and Joho out of he discussions.

Here are some of the reactions.

Senior Counsel Ahmednsir Abdullahi has said that the ruling Jubilee party killed Mombasa’s economy because they hated governor Hassan Ali Joho.

His statement follows the demonstrations that were staged in Mombasa on Monday following what the residents argued that Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has spelled doom on the region’s economy.

With the coming of SGR, all cargo is supposed to be transported by the railway line, denying job opportunities to road transporters.

Ahmednasir now claims that since Jubilee is now in love with governor Joho due to the handshake between Prrsident Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition chief Raila Odinga, a marshal plan should be done to revive Mombasa’s economy.

The senior counsel further says that the plan should be named Sultan Joho plan.

“JUBILEE KILLED Mombasa because once upon a time they hated/didn’t like Sultan @HassanAliJoho. Now that JUBILEE is MADLY in LOVE with Sultan Joho, please do a Marshall plan to revive Mombasa….call it SULTAN JOHO Plan,” he posted.

The demonstration, which started at Makupa round about to Changamwe round about in Mombasa west, caused a jam between the Island and Mombasa mainland.

The demonstrators carrying placards castigating Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority officials and a minister walked over 10 kilometres as they sang songs against the government.

As the demonstration continued, the truck drivers hooted as a sign of solidarity while road construction workers also abandoned their works to cheer demonstrators.
